Marathon Weekend 2017!

Feels like 28 today in Manhattan, and Thursday is a stroller run, so:

After a chat with @FFigawi, I think we're in agreement on "hosting" a meet-up at Beach Club!

Friday, 2 p.m., at Hurricane Hannah's - it's the pool bar accessible from the Boardwalk loop. We'll be in the bar area, but can also spread out into the table area.

I'll post updates closer to the date if there is inclement weather.

If you're planning to drop by, please let me know so I can give the bar a heads-up!
Boo, we are staying at Beach Club but not getting there til Saturday. Let me know if anyone is hanging out at the pool Saturday and needs company. I'm on my own that day wile DH and DS hit MK.

Not sure if I'll be able to make that but I'll if I can fit it in.

Okay, a question for you all. I am watching the hourly forecast for Saturday as I would rather run in warm rain than brutal cold wind chills. If I have to stop and wait out some thunderstorms would it negate the value of the long run? How long of a break in a long run makes it not could as "1" run?

That's an interesting question and one I have not seen any hard evidence one way or the other on. My gut instinct tells me it depends on how long you ran before you stopped. Secondarily, it would also depend on how long you intended to run after stopping. The purpose of the long run is to work on running economy (or the ability to stave off fatigue and maintain your Lactate Threshold at a set pace). Once you stop running your body will enter a recovery mode. The longer you ran before you stopped, the more fatigue was likely induced. The longer you've stopped the more recovery is induced. So without those two variables it's hard to say exactly. As a pure guess, I would say anything over an hour is likely to diminish the "long run" effects. And secondarily, the longer the break the more you likely increase your risk of injury (dependent on how far you ran pre-break) as your body can tolerate a 20 mile run/walk, but might not be as appreciative of a 15 + 5 run/walk in the same day because of what "mode" your body is in after running 15 and then taking a several hour break and then run/walking 5 miles.

My best advice for this situation. Run as far as you can before the break. Take the break for as short as you can for safety reasons (thunderstorms). You can attempt the remainder of your distance, but listen to your body. If it doesn't feel right (sore, tired, fading paces, stiff, odd sensations, etc.), then shut it down because at this point in training you have a high percentage of the fitness you'll have on race day already in your body.

Anyone else download the "Moana" soundtrack to use marathon weekend?? Also, this is the only place I can say that without feeling like a 35 year-old dork :)

Absolutely!

I didn't download it for marathon weekend but I did download it and it's fantastic. If anyone hasn't seen the movie I highly recommend it. Fabulous movie with great music and amazing animation.

That is pretty much what I was thinking. As it looks right now (of course it will change!)I could probably get in 15-16 miles in just rain before thunderstorms start, and they show (currently) lasting an hour then no more for a couple of hours. I will just see how it goes I guess, depending on the storms. I have done a 23 mile long run, although it was back on Thanksgiving weekend, so I feel like I will be able to complete the marathon. I just haven't run longer than 7 miles since due to the way my training plan is set up so I wanted to get in 1 more long run before the dreaded taper, lol. :) Thanks for your "guess"! :)

I wouldn't worry about having to take a break, especially for a safety reason. I've done longer runs in two parts before...I think you're good as long as you don't do that for EVERY run, which you haven't. :)

I'll be pool-hanging on Saturday afternoon! Weather-permitting, obviously - at least until our dinner ADR!

Ok I'll look for you! I assume you look more like your avatar than I do mine. I don't have bangs.

I wish I was at BC this year. It would be easier for me to make it over there but I'm at Saratoga Springs.
