Marathon Weekend 2017!

I work 50+ hours/week. I am also a husband, a father and a home owner. I truly understand how busy life can get. Right now I am running 7 days/week AND doing P90X 5x/week.

I am not saying that anyone else should do what I do. I do it because I want to, and I sacrifice a lot of other things to run as much as I do. But the reality is simple - you have the time to run as much as you want to run. The only question is, how much do you want to run?

I think that's very true and an answer that's probably different for everybody. That's why I love running so much. It's an incredibly individualized sport and there is no one right answer.

There are times I want to run more...and times I don't. :)

I have a difficult time with recovery if I do not have a day off. I plan to follow Galloway for this reason. I am open to suggestions for a quick and safe recovery but I have not found anything yet.

DodeyBadger, what kind of info do you need?

I totally agree that things are individualized. I have to take time increasing my running mileage due to knee and ankle issues. My roommate just started running again in January and is already running some of the same mileage as me, and running more of it (I do a lot of run/walk type of pacing). We're just two different people with two different running plans.

Sent you a PM.

What are you considering?!?

Also - I have a few spots left on my second Illuminations pontoon boat, if anyone else is interested! The price is $27/pp and I'm covering catering and tip!

@Keels How many spots do you have left?

This.

I work 40+ hours a week, spend another 10+ hours a week commuting, am the main chauffeur for my two 10 year olds, have another 2 year old and am mowing 8 lawns to pay for this trip and I'm still running 4 times a week. Weekends I'm running before everyone else is even up and Tues/Thurs I run after work. It's a commitment, but I'm investing a lot of time and money into this endeavor (along with other races) and don't want to say I didn't give it my all.

As far as I'm concerned, this marathon won't be "won" or "lost" in January, it will be won or lost during the months I do or do not put the time into training for it.

Okay, I'm off my soap box. Who wants a beer?

I can't believe I'm siding with a Buckeyes fan. I guess us Big 10 folk have to stick together.

Yeah, I mean...I may not choose to use a Galloway plan but I certainly don't blame anyone that does use them. All of our lives, bodies, schedules, motivations, etc. are different, and that is okay. :) What's important is that we're all getting out there, respecting one another's efforts, and supporting one another.

Wow, that got touch feely at the end there, didn't it? It's been one of those days! :grouphug:

Hey fellow Marathon Weekend'ers! I don't believe I've posted it here, but we've got a Disboards community group on the Strava website. Come train with us and help keep each other motivated. All paces and distances are welcome!

I love the group on Strava! Very motivating. I would like to add a note here that I had a small surgery recently and won't be able to run for a few weeks (insert panic mode here) so don't think I have just given up fellow Strava users!

Exciting news! My DVC rental went through and hubby and I are officially staying at the Poly the tues-fri after the marathon! Excited doesn't even begin to cover it... I'm elated!!

In other not so exciting news... I wasn't able to start training this week because buttloads of walking lunges/jump squats jacked up my knee. I've been resting it and hoping it gets better by next week. :worried:

Yay For Poly! Boo for knee. Hope it feels better soon.

Okay, I want to take a poll! Who uses (or has used in the past) the Galloway marathon plan successfully? I started out with it, switched to Higdon and am now considering switching back. I just don't have time to run 4 times a week. I used JG for my half training and really liked it. And today would be an opportune time to switch back since his marathon plan officially starts today. Anyone have any positive input for it?

I have lots of positive input! (And positive output, in terms of time improvement.)

Using Galloway plans over 5 years, I've gone from someone who's never run, to a 3-hour half-marathon finisher, to a marathon finisher, to a 2:17 half-marathon finisher. And I hope to keep getting better. It fits my schedule well, it's not overwhelming on weekdays, and I haven't had any issues with the long runs on the weekend. Yeah, there are some crazy long weekend runs as you get closer to race day, but the secret is to take those slower than your race pace.

I can't speak as someone who's focused on competition, but as a casual runner, Jeff's plans have made a huge difference in my life. My running goals are staying injury-free, making steady improvement, and having a great time. The Galloway plans are perfect for those goals.

Doug OUT.
