Marathon Weekend 2017!

Hi folks, I am gearing up to make this my first marathon and I'm getting excited putting my training runs into my calendar. I have a question for the group about how to best make an adjustment to the recommended full marathon training program to account for the Wine & Dine challenge. The training says that week should be a half marathon on Sunday -- no problem there, but I will be running the 10K on Saturday which the program has designated as a rest day. Since I will be running on that rest day, how would you adjust the training earlier that week which is recommended as Tue-4mi, Wed-7mi(pace), Thu-4mi, Fri-rest. Thanks!!

How do you plan on approaching the Wine and Dine Challenge? Are you racing them, using them as training runs, or being more leisurely and enjoying Disney?

I am a guy and I didn't take offense to it. I have actually joked with myself that if I end up running the marathon in 2017 (I am still on the fence about running it this year. I think I rejoined this thread in hopes of all the talk making want to sign up even more) I may run in a skirt just to get outside of my comfort zone because I am normally pretty boring of a person. Do they have them big enough for a 220 lb guy though?
They do make shorts for guys now...I can't remember exactly what they are called. Sparkle Pants?

Men do wear the skirts though. ;)

If it were me, I'd run Tue -4mi, Wed-4mi, Thu-Rest, Fri-Rest, Sat-10k (pace, if you like), Sun-half. That keeps you pretty close to the mileage for the week and most of the plans I'm familiar with tell you it's ok to move runs around a bit as circumstance and life intervene.

I'm in a little bit of a similar boat as I'm going to be working towards City of Oaks Marathon (early Nov) and have Dumbo Double Dare in the middle. I've just planned to flip flop weeks 8 and 9 of my plan so that the suggested half lines up with the DDD weekend.

I plan to approach them as legit training runs in my approach to the full -- the marathon is my priority.

I would make the following changes:

Tuesday - 4 miles
Wednesday - 2 miles easy + 2 miles pace + 2 miles easy
Thursday - rest
Friday - rest
Saturday - 10k at 60 sec slower than marathon pace
Sunday - 13.1 at 40 sec slower than marathon pace

I think the advice you have gotten sounds good. The important thing to remember is to get a couple days of rest before race weekend.

I've run two Comrades races wearing a red glittery sparkle skirt, so I can attest to the truthfulness of what @Ariel484 is saying.

I've seen men in skirts on all the videos I watch. If I do get one it will be for the half, not the full. I need to make sure I have my most comfortable clothes on for the full.

I have my appointment to get my ankle checked out and then I can decide what I'm doing. I just wish flights and room rates were released so I could price it out before I register. I fly Jet Blue or Southwest and they aren't out yet.

Well running my first marathon. Beyond excited. Started training using the recommended disney training program. NEED ADVICE FROM VETERANS!
1.Nutrition
2. Apparel for running in the race (looking at just using one of my gym shorts and getting a new under armor sweat wicking shirt)
3. List of things to do race weekend besides finding my way to Wide World of Sports to get stuff.
4. Anything worth mentioning/seeing/doing (and YES i do plan on going through the parks after the race) Im more concerned what to do before the race or just go to the expo at WWOS.

Thanks again guys talk to you soon!

For (1) and (2), these are part of training. You want to have both locked down before the race. Biggest rule - nothing new on race day!

Go to your local sporting goods store and buy a few different things to try - gels, chews, waffles, beans, etc. Figure out what you do and do not like - maybe a certain brand's texture doesn't agree with you, or a certain flavor makes your stomach upset. Maybe chews get stuck in your teeth...etc. Ditto to figuring out how often you need something - figure out what works best for you on your long runs. FYI - Disney has Powerade and water at their stops, so you may want to train with that.

Same for clothes - try your race outfit on a long run to make sure it's comfortable.

Getting to the expo to get your stuff is obviously most important. Review the guide to make sure you're sharp on transportation information, etiquette, etc. Also try to run a local race 10 miles or longer for proof of time. I also recommend trying the race shirt on at the expo to figure it of the size you picked works - I feel their sizing hasn't been consistent lately and they do have shirt exchange.

Other stuff...look for race weekend trip reports here on the DIS. They can be really helpful!

Post race - book a celebratory lunch/dinner and wear your medal to the parks for pictures (especially one with Mickey!).

Good luck!! The training is the toughest part, but if you stick to it you'll be rewarded with an awesome race!! :)

To add on to @ariel great advice consider getting a pair of running shorts as opposed to gym shorts. Look for ones with a zippered pockets so you can carry whichever nutrition items you choose. Or consider a fuel belt of some kind if that works for you.
