Marathon Weekend 2017!

No one should ever feel or be made to feel that what they are running or plan to run is not enough. For some people, a 5k is as much of an achievement as a half is for others. We all have different abilities and motivations for doing these races, and we should celebrate the fact that we're out there doing our best for us and not get dragged down by comparing ourselves to others.

I think it's easy to get caught up in the excitement here. I love Marathon weekend. 2017 will be my 6th Goofy and 7th year of Marathon weekend. I've done Dopey too but there's no reason to feel like anything isn't enough. The time commitment for training for the Marathon, Goofy and Dopey are all about the same, so it's really up to you how much time and money you want to spend on the races.

Rationally I completely agree with you - it's just that inner-crazy in me! Pre-Dopey, I never felt compelled to do the "Dumbo" (5K/Half/Marathon), but now that they've put a name on it and added a medal, it just draws me in. Marketing genius!

Absolutely agree! Marketing genius! ... And after all that work, why settle for 1 medal when you can can have 6!

Awesome topic. The energy and excitement for 2017 Marathon weekend are almost enough to make me switch from my earlier proclamation to do another round of Dopey in 2018! Trying to talk DW into joining me this time.

With the weather this year and a nagging calf injury that I had to stretch during the race multiple times causing me to run a somewhat sub-par time for me, I'm already planning out my approach to the 2017 Disney Marathon.

BTW, did anyone notice that the winning time of the marathon this year was the slowest winning time in the 23 year history of the race? And Fredison Costa, who won it this year again, ran a full 15 minutes slower than he did last year while winning? That is what 68 degrees and high humidity at the start will do to even elite marathoners.

As a Floridian who is all sorts of frustrated with my performance so far this exceptionally warm season, this makes me feel MUCH better - thanks for sharing! I think living in it day after day, I lose sight of just how much impact heat and humidity have, even when well acclimated.

Costa actually lives in Kissimmee. But his interview with Orlando Sentinel says it all.

“I had a lot of problems breathing because of the humidity,’’ Costa said. “It was very hard for me to take in air."

I am glad to hear that 2017 will be the 20th Donald Half Marathon. I am planning on doing the Dopey for the first time. I have previous experience ding the Goofy in 2012, the full in 2010 and 2015 and the half in 2008. A really good tip for those in the Boston area: Run Disney usually has a booth at the Boston Marathon expo where they allow you to sign up for the marathon weekend races early. That is where I will plan on signing up as I will be there picking up my bib for this years Boston.

With each passing day since returning home I find myself continuing to think about Dopey 2017. I am now looking at ways I can fund a return for 2017. A few weeks ago it was absolutely no and the soonest would be 2018. Now I am all signed up for local races for 2016 and all that is left to do is sign up for Dopey in April. I think that I will end up doing it again. I want another shot at a better marathon as I was 50 minutes off my PR and 30 minutes of the goal time I was shooting for. I think this is an addiction! I know my wife thinks it is!

Question on Dopey registration...looks like I have convinced the wife to run Dopey with me next year and wondering how hard it is to register. We have both DVC and AP's so should be able to get in on the presale. I can't remember from previous races, but can I register both of us at the same time? I don't want to have one of us signed up only to find that registration is full when I go to sign up the other one...

I'll take that over training in Iowa during the winter any day! Temps of my runs this past week have been 10, 37 and 13. I have 5 miles on the plan today, but it's -4. That's too much for me.

-4, that's all, you should be able to handle that. I did almost 5 miles in that yesterday. It's the -14 that's keeping me in today. :)

Nope - you've got to register one at a time. Or have two windows up when you log in so you can hold your place in the queue. It took Dopey a couple of hours to sell out for this year, so if you're on right at Noon EST, you should be good.

I have decided to register for 2017. I did the half in 2010 in freezing rain, I did the marathon in 2013 in very hot weather for a Canadian (I did like the weather in 2010 :)). So I hope for something in the 50's for 2017. Right now, my plan is to do the 5k,10k,and half- marathon. No more marathon for this lady.

so uh... i'm tenatively in for marathon 2017 so I can do the dopey 2018... I'm just torn because i'd really like to do the princess half and get the pink coast to coast with the tinkerbell, or just drop the princess and get the normal coast to coast with the marathon and tinkerbell. I really need help, as it would be a great expense, but if i start saving now i could do it, but I need help thinking through it all...and if it would just be too much...

I will be out there for the Disney full in 2017 as that's the one race I plan to do without fail every year.My plans are still solid for Dopey in 2018 but I'm eyeing another challenge in 2017 a month after Disney, the Gasparilla Distance classic Michelob Ultra challenge,a 5K and 15k on Saturday followed by a half marathon and an 8K on Sunday, nowhere near the amount of miles for Dopey or even Goofy but the whole logistics of the races is intriguing, has anyone done this challenge? They also have two other challenges if you don't want to do every single race but if I do this it must be to do them all.

I'm interested in the response you get to this. I want to do this challenge also!

Cool, thanks @Keels...shouldn't be a problem getting on at noon whenever it opens up.

My coworker is doing the Gasparilla Ultra Challenge this year. I'll let you know what she says.
