Marathon Weekend 2017!

At first I was shocked by this, but then DH brought up a good point-how many STARTED? I mean, there were about 25,000 registered, but how many people woke up Sunday morning, looked at the temperature, and decided that it wasn't for them. Maybe they decided that the "resort run", like so many did Saturday, was better-once the sun came up.

I pointed that out in another post.I specifically looked at marathon results from 2016 and 2017 from runners from Miami,Orlando and Tampa,Florida cities where runners are not used to those temps and there's no doubt about it that there's a huge percentage this year that signed up and didn't run it when compared to last year, the cold scared people off!!

Maybe...but for me, after everything I did to get ready for this weekend, all of the training all year, and the money I spent on the trip, the weather wasn't going to keep me away as long as Disney said it was safe to run. :confused3
Plus it actually turned out to be a decent day for running as long as you had on a layer or two (at least after turning towards the castle and setting the spinnaker for the downwind leg).

We had so much fun cheering on the runners this past weekend! You guys are pretty amazing! We did a livestream from the Disney Marathon from Epcot. You may see yourself!

I see myself in the most ridiculous looking outfit (yes the fuzzy pink leopard PJ pants were supposed to be throw away that never got thrown away) right at 1:29! This is pretty awesome, just as the spectators are too!

In regards to shirts, I saw someone had listed a half marathon short on eBay with a buy it now price of $299. Guess they think they have a collectors item.

We were talking with the run Disney staff at the expo and they said on Weds people came in with big families and they were buying baskets full of the half marathon pin. I guess each person was able to buy 2 or 3. I am assuming they were planning on ebaying them. I'm surprised that those pins still seem to be selling for around 20 bucks on ebay. I wonder if runDisney will let those people return the pins?

I definitely saw teal Dapper Dan at some point before the race. Awesome costumes @IamTrike!!
Teal was me!

Teal was me!
Well then I saw you before the race started! I was the one that looked like this*:

*not much of an exagerration

Is anyone still missing photos from the marathon? I have many of them, but I'm still missing MK Castle pic and post-race picture with my medal. Curious if others are seeing the same.

I'm still missing my castle pic, too. I did a jump and fear my bib number didn't show enough to catch.

Have you looked with the app and the website? for some reason I have some that showed up in just MDE on the website and some that just showed up on the app and some that were on both.

I'm still missing some as well--one that I really want....only could do one character stop, so I really want that one :).

80+ pages to catch up on since last time I checked in?!?! There are worse ways to pass time, but I’ll have to get on that later, lol!

What. a. weekend. Crazy! Here’s my take on it, as a first-time Dopey…

Expo
After battling traffic for 2 hours to get to WDW, I was in no way emotionally ready for what awaited at WWOS, lol! It was just about 12pm when I hit the intersection of Osceola and Victory Way, and traffic was backed up on Victory to the intersection. I needed to eat STAT, so I made a U-turn and had lunch at CBR before trying again about an hour later. That time, traffic moved along and I got parked, no problem. I had many texts from friends already in WWOS warning me of what was ahead, but I still wasn’t prepared for the crazy line going into the Field House. I’ve never seen anything like that at previous expos! It moved, though, and I got my Dopey bibs and shirts. When I saw the line snaking around the fields for the expo, I said “forget it – there is nothing in there I want badly enough to deal with that.” Super thankful all the Dopey stuff was in the Field House so I could skip Josten’s Center!

5K Day
What a great “race”! Stayed at Wyndham Bonnet Creek and drove to all races: encountered no traffic. Spent the whole race with friends and took tons of pics. Weather was cool for this Floridian, but comfortably so. Starting in corral D, character lines were long, but since it was basically untimed, I was willing to wait. Tried for a pic with Dopey at the end, but they’d already closed the (long) line.

10K Day
Another beautiful morning – wasn’t that sunrise something?! My plan was to stick to my slightly more walking than running intervals plan and go my own pace, skipping stops until I was well into WS. My last couple 10Ks, I spent time at the front end waiting in lines and wound up behind the Balloon Ladies, needing to increase the speed to get back ahead of them, and I didn’t want to risk that with the half and full yet to go. It worked out beautifully and I caught up to some of my running group buddies in WS and grabbed a couple pics with them before hitting the Boardwalk. Once safely back in EP, I slowed way down and stopped for some great pics before finishing. Tried again for a pic with Dopey afterward, but the line, while still open, was a 45 minute wait: nope.

I spent the rest of the day emotional about the shootings in Ft. Lauderdale and mildly spazzing out about the weather. I was pretty sure all the rD communication about “monitoring” the situation was a bad sign, though for a while there, local weather reporting sounded like the storms might go through before volunteers needed to be out there getting ready… and then the cancellation. :( Followed by a quick procession of disbelief, disappointment, and frustration that all that hard Dopey training was for naught in the end. Folks in my running group started talking about getting together to run what they could at the Boardwalk, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to do that, and I couldn’t keep my eyes open another minute, so went to sleep with my alarm set for 4am. Why 4? IDK – it just seemed like a good compromise between 2 and my usual 6, lol!

Half-Marathon Day
4am: race still canceled, storms coming. Went back to a fitful sleep. 6am: got up, ate, started texting with friends also staying at WBC and we decided to put in some miles there at the resort once the weather cleared around 9am. My plan was just to run a few miles and see how I felt: at the start I was thinking I’d save my legs and make the most out of the full. But as the miles went on and we saw more and more runners out there also getting it done, and as we stopped for mock character pics and silly adventures ensued, I found myself at 10+ miles and feeling good, so decided to go ahead and finish 13.1 with my friend who wanted to get it done. I’m soooo glad I did! The vibe of so many runners supporting and encouraging each other out there was amazingly uplifting in a way that I’ve never felt during a Disney race and the increasingly bad weather just made the experience that much more badass. We finished in front of our building, soaked to the skin, shivering, wind-blown, hungry, and grinning from ear to ear! I spent the rest of the day recovering, resting, and trying to get calories in before the next day.

Marathon Day
Y’all, that was some serious COLD for this 20+ year Floridian! I left my car wearing: calf sleeves, tights, fleece pajama pants, long sleeve tech shirt, short sleeve tech shirt, long sleeve turtleneck thermal tech shirt, neck gaiter, fleece hooded jacket, running ball cap, fleece ear cover, gloves, and two mylar blankets. I had hand warmers in each hand and toe warmers in my shoes. I found a semi-sheltered spot to huddle in until we went to the corrals, and then I tried to shelter myself in the crowd in my corral. So very, very cold. Even with some pacing about, there was no way to get my muscles warm enough for a fast start, so I started in the back of my corral (K) and walked for a good half mile, not wanting to risk pulling a too-cold muscle by running yet. I ditched my jacket and PJ bottoms within the first mile… and totally regretted it when we hit World Dr. BRRRRRRRRR!!!! At some point, I reached down to pull up the legs of my tights and realized I had absolutely NO feeling in my thighs. None. That concerned me a bit, but I was run-walking well and the sun was rising, so I kept going. I did warm up a bit through the remaining miles, but I finished still wearing two layers and my ear cover and gloves, and didn’t ditch the neck gaiter until mile 24.

I thought the marathon was wonderful, overall! I felt like there were ample opportunities to get some nifty pics, and the creative touches of the Nostalgia Museum and “dig site” were inventive and fun. Course support was great, despite the harsh conditions; I’m amazed and impressed that so many VoluntEars showed up in the cold! CMs were super friendly and encouraging throughout. The congestion never really let up for me and it was frustrating at times when I couldn’t go my own comfortable pace because there simply wasn’t anywhere to go, but that’s part and parcel of racing at WDW and I know not to let that mess with my mind too much. I’m proud to say that I finished strong, feeling pretty darned good, aside from the cold, and feeling more accomplished than I expected! Wore my Dopey medal with pride to dinner and the next day. :thumbsup2

Congratulations to all--I didn't participate much in this thread, but I read each and every one of your posts this year along the way and I just wanted to say that I am grateful to all of you for your collective wisdom. This was a great community and you all helped me so much with more than running--from what to wear and where to stay to how to prepare mentally.

I finished the marathon by trusting my training as members here suggested. In fact, I only saw the balloon ladies once in an in-and-out and they were not close! Lots of people did pass me, but not all of them and I even passed a few too. A great moment--belting out Sweet Caroline with a few hundred other folks when it played as we were headed for Hollywood Studios and were getting the sense that we were gonna make it! Speaking of singing, I saw the Dapper Dans--love it! Best off, I felt good when I finished--toured Epcot, went for a nice dinner, fireworks and two more days of park touring after.

My take-aways are that if I do it again, I want to run with someone--it looked like a lot more fun than running alone. That means either I need to get faster or I need to make some slower friends. Or recruit someone.....

Question--I want to buy a couple of marathon labeled items that I avoided due to my fear of jinxing myself. Does anyone know if that is possible? I'm particularly looking for the jacket....

Not sure if you will find that one. I went to the tent after the race for the same reason! They had 2 left, size S. And I bought one of them!

@PrincessV Congrats on the race! Re: the on race pics - sad to say it sounds like a lot of them started disappearing at the end of the race :( I started in L and by the time I hit AK everyone was flat out walking. I kept trying to get around and I think that is partly how my knee got aggravated. But, I fell towards the back from walking. Enough that I saw the balloon ladies in the distance once (and thankfully never again!) and by the time we hit HS I was realizing some of the photo stops and chocolates etc. that people were reporting were MIA. Not sure if they packed up or ran out. But boo.

Can anyone help with race photos?

I was checking out my photos on the MyDisneyExperience app yesterday at the airport and saw that I could buy all of my photos for one day for $60. With that option, I could do all of my marathon photos, plus some character photos of my daughter with Anna and Elsa. Now, I'm on the Disney website and I'm not seeing that as an option. Any guidance? I'd love to buy all of the Sunday photos, but not if they are only available on my phone.

Thanks in advance!

Some of the photopass options are weird. Like for Memory Maker you can buy the advance price for $149 on the website but you can't buy it on the app in advance. You might just have to buy it on your phone. Once you buy it all you have to do is log on on your computer and you can download them there.

Yes, it passed me with my family around mile 2.5. They even had a horn that sounded just like the monorail to warn you that they were coming up behind. My 8 and 11 year old sons thought it was the best costume of the weekend.
Wow I didn't know about the horn that's awesome!

We had giant paper Fastpasses in our corral for the 5K.
