Marathon Weekend 2017!

3 Facts about moi:
1. I (very painfully) helped with the roll-out of Obamacare
2. Everyone in my family likes to go topless at the beach (TMI? not really...)
3. Favorite Disney Song - Tomorrow's Child (old Spaceship Earth theme song, back when Walter Cronkite was the narrator)

I want to give a shout-out on here to my sweet friend (and soon-to-be Dope in 2017!) - not only did she run ALL THREE races during W&D weekend, she just finished her FIRST MARATHON this past weekend ... and crushed her goal time! Way to go, @tigger536!! You're a rock start and I can't wait to see you finish your first Dopey!!

Thank you!! I can't wait to run Dopey with you and the rest of the crew! 49 more days until the fun begins!!! :drinking1

Back home after our college visit/super heroes weekend and posted a quick review over on the Super Heroes Half thread. But thought I'd post a few things that I learned in preparation for Dopey here:

1. It's going to be lonely running three of four races on my own! :( Just earned a coast-to-coast with my oldest son and it really is a joy running with him and cheering him on. For Dopey, I'll run the 5K with our youngest, but he's too young for the other races and our teen boys arrive too late for the 10K and half.

2. I think I've figured out how to run slower but use the same leg muscles as I do when I run faster. I run most half marathons in the 1:52 - 1:58 range. My kids run in the 2:30 - 2:45 range, so that's a big change of pace when I'm running with them. I plan to run the Dopey half somewhere in between, but I've been worried about shin splints (that's what usually happens when I run with my kids.) So this weekend I experimented by continuing to use upper leg muscles to run a slower pace. It worked! No shin splints and felt great all day/next day.

3. I learned that I can run a half marathon, spend over 12 hours in a theme park and feel great the next day. So I considered this weekend successful Dopey training!

I train at my wife's pace 3 days/week to get used to it. I also train differently for rD runs in other ways - like stopping and standing for a few minutes frequently to get my legs used to that. It is painful to run that much slower if you don't train for it. I'm glad that you found your answer.

While reading here, it seems, everyone is doing the Dopey and me is the only one running "just" the marathon.

Where do you all get the mental and physical strength to do this.

This sunday I did a 18 Mile slow long run and, to be honest, I could no imagine doing this again the next day. I try to run four times a week and my pace and stamina (?) is getting better. So maybe in 2018 the Dopey is an option, if we can organize the trip from germany again :-D

Its never "just" the marathon. Even the 5K is a big deal. Like you said not everyone has the mental or physical capacity for such an event. My mom is doing the 5K in January and she's never done a 5K before.

Many find a marathon as a bucket list item and one and done. Just keep working, I know you'll do just fine. If it was easy everyone would do it.

FWIW I'm doing just the Marathon (well ok, I'm also in the untimed non-Dopey 5K, and plan to do it quite leisurely).

Congrats on getting to 18 miles! That's a huge accomplishment.

It's true that Dopey is popular, but that shouldn't diminish anyone else's accomplishments. I'm guessing that you are a newer runner? The mental and physical strength comes over time and there is absolutely nothing wrong with participating in this race weekend without doing some kind of challenge. Don't let anyone make you feel otherwise! You'll love the marathon, it's a lot of fun and will be a great reward for all of the hard work you have done. :)

You're doing great!! The marathon is a HUGE accomplishment - one of my besties is coming out to Florida to do the Marathon in January.

It was my first Marathon, and I can't imagine a better race experience than running 26.2 miles at Disney.

Keep up the great work!

Right there with you! I did 20 this past Saturday and I was shuffling the last couple of miles. I am doing okay stamina wise, but my pace is pathetic and my feet hurt afterwards. I am babying them now. However, I am telling you we can do this! It's going to be a huge accomplishment even w/out doing Dopey!

Feeling proud of myself for figuring something out--I made a Fast Pass + reservation for the character spot in Epcot on the afternoon of the 8th. I will go in with my sweaty self and medal and take photos there so I don't have to feel like taking one during the race will get me swept!

My mom ran the 5K in 2014, the 10K in 2015, HM in 2016, and will be attempting her first marathon in 2017 at age 60. No matter the distance I will always be proud of everything she accomplishes regardless of my own races/goals.

And trust me on this -

It gets easier. I started in 2012 and running 3 miles was a chore. Running 10 miles in a week, then 20 miles in a week, then 30 miles, then 40, then 50, then 60, then 70 miles. It just takes patience and years of running. It will come with time.

Congrats to your mom! A first marathon at 60 is awesome!
