Marathon Weekend 2017!

I absolutely hate the WWoS part of the course. I hate all the winding around, and I hate seeing all the people coming out while I am still on my way in. I really wish they could figure out a way to get those miles in without having to do all the back and forth throughout that place.

Completely agree and then that long stretch as you exit WWoS and head towards DHS and hit that ramp that's on an angle. Not a fan.

I think passing people who are headed out of WWoS and several miles ahead of you as you are headed in is the toughest mental challenge the course offers. I think that adds to the frustration of all the twists and turns once you are inside. It does feel pretty good to pass people who are headed in when you are on your way out though; I feel a little guilty admitting that. I try to give encouragement as I am headed out to other runners, I know I certainly need it at that portion of the course.
Hopefully with a full year of training under my belt (and a decent corral placement) I'll be able to experience this next January - when I exited WWOS this past January I was far enough back that the only runners still entering the complex were stragglers who were in the process of being swept one-by-one from the course. The few I saw were gamely trying to continue on, but a van slowly caught up to them and a CM gently but firmly coaxed them in. Sadly, what can you say to them as you pass?

I actually enjoyed WWOS, including the run in! I knew some friends were just enough ahead of me that it was likely they'd be heading out when I was heading in, so I spent that time looking for them (found them, too!), so that probably helped.

Wow! Great responses, everyone! That's some solid Sundays are for Disney participation.

Now I'm under pressure to bring some solid questions.

Have a great week!

I like WWoS, too! It's just so different. That track feels SOOOO good after 18 miles - even if it's less that 1/4 mile. I love running into the baseball stadium...and the fact that my wife always meets me there with a smooch and a pretzel makes it that much better! Plus, they play college fight songs (still haven't heard Georgia Tech though) which gets me a little amped-up.

I will admit getting to and from WWoS is not my favorite but I like being there!

24 weeks, everyone!

This week's Sundays are for Disney question:

What's the first thing you plan to eat or drink right after the marathon (or your longest race)?

I think I'm going to head into Epcot and get the biggest margarita I can find. I'm typically more of a beer guy, but a margarita sounds really refreshing and the extra booze should ease some of the aches and pains.

Sort of depends on how I run the race but if I get back to the hotel in time I'll order room service breakfast with a mimosa. Or two.

After Dopey is complete, I'll probably have some water in the finisher's chute. Then eat whatever Disney provides in the box. Down about 16 oz of chocolate milk (which my family will bring). And then keep consuming food non-stop for the next few hours (bananas, apples, chicken sandwich, etc). I'll also be enjoying cheering on and congratulating my fellow finishers at the finish line. My mom is probably going to finish several hours after me, so that leaves me with a big gap of time to say hi to the rest of you as you finish. When it gets closer to the finish I'll probably come up with a locale where I'll be after finishing if people want to stop by and say hi. That evening we're going to Brown Derby and I haven't decided what I'll have yet.

I don't drink alcohol anymore, but a margarita sounds delicious.

Hmm--I've made dinner reservations, but haven't thought about the "right after" part. Interested to see what others say. I'll be a late finisher, so I will probably have something from Epcot as we walk around.

Beer sounds good ...always :drinking1

It would be nice to see some of our fellow Dis'ers finish but logistics on that could be tough. Can you even get back to the finish line or is that just for Chear folks? Very cool that your mom is running too.

I will probably try and bag check a chocolate milk in a lunch box with an ice pack. I also purchased the race retreat, and the muffins and an ice cold coke were pretty good last year for what I wanted immediately after the marathon last year.

No clue what I plan to eat right after. I have never been really hungry after finishing a half marathon so I am gussing I will eat whatever is in the snack box they give us at the finish line. What I am extremely excited about is our reservation at the Yatchsman that night for dinner!

Yea you can stand along the finishers chute about 20 feet past the finish line where they hand out medals. I stood there for about an hour last year waiting for my wife and mom to finish. You just have to stand on the opposite side of the fence from finishers but no chear squad is required. No matter where I stood I was going to bring a sign to the finish as well as pre-run. I'll bet for us two though our corrals will be close for all of the events.

The marathons I have run (three from October to Dopey last year) I have been hungry right afterwards, and then about an hour later when I actually can get real food (and I may have purchased it because it sounded good), I start to get a bit nauseous. I feel like if I put anything in my stomach at that point I might puke. Give me another hour and I'm back to being hungry. :) So I have a short period of time right after a really long race to get anything in my stomach.

Not sure this year. Looks like I may be flying home on Sunday night so I'll probably have to avoid anything with lactose and won't likely be eating a very heavy meal. I'll have plenty of time to celebrate some other time I guess. The past few years we have hit up the POR food court for Pizza afterward and then Boatwright's for Corn Bread, French Onion Soup and Prime Rib. Yeah, it's been a high calorie day.

Something from the snack box, water and Powerade. :)

I'm sure I will devour the box on the bus back to our room to clean up. Then the dinner sampler at 50's PTC, followed later by a No Way Jose at B&C!
