Marathon Weekend 2016

QOTD:
If you had to choose only one race distance to run, what distance and why?

This is tough. 10K is my favorite distance for feeling like I've done something while not feeling like I have to schedule my whole day around it. I need the marathon though to keep me motivated to do my training runs and, as someone who has never run an ultra, there's nothing quite like the feeling of finishing a marathon.

How cool, another Michigander on the thread! I am hoping to run the River Bank Run this spring I have heard it is a good race with some challenging hills. Looking forward to it. Have a good race!

Thanks, you too! River Bank is really fun, and the second half is definitely hilly!

QOTD: Have to agree with others, Marathon for the challenge and travel. Longer distances don't interest me or my body at this point. Shorter distances don't seem worth traveling for and each marathon I've done has been a destination I really wanted to experience. No desire to do any of our local marathons.

We are at Universal now, then Disneyworld in a few days. Hard to read and respond at this point, I wish all of you a great run no matter the distance or preparation. Have a wonderful time!

Name: Chris
Events: 5k and marathon
Corral: B
Costume: none, boring running gear
Middle of corral
Expect 3:25-3:50. I really have no idea and don't mind any finish time as long as the body holds up.

Happy new year, guys!! pixiedust:

I was at the beach and totally away from the Internet! It took me a while to roll over the last postings, and got even more excited after each post! OMG!
Can't wait to actually be there, and hopefully see some of your faces around!
I'll be flying to Florida next Tuesday at 1am and I have to finish packing yet.
See ya real soon!

No playlist for me as I'm running sans music and headphones. Now if I was doing a full you better believe I'd need music.

QOTD: 15k....specifically one in Nov that ends with a whole lot of chocolate and a chocolate bar medal. It's not quite 10 miles, but still feels like a stretch over a 10k.

I'm also so jealous of everyone in Disney right now no matter the weather!

Oh and I got my hair did today so I don't look like a total Schlub in my pics :)

QOTD

10k all the way. I still get to have a shower, nap and Mickey waffles after a 10k. It's long enough that I feel like I've done something, and I'm still slow enough that I keep improving my time

Thinking this through though, maybe I just like it better before it's easier for me. Also, my bf ran them with me and now I'm do the halves alone because I'm slow. It's not as fun.

We leave in 2 days!!! Last long run today of a 10k at the beach. Best run by far. Even beat my previous PR at the Star Wars 10k. I decreased my intervals to 30:30. Crazy that it worked. Not sure what will do for the race, but this was promising!

Welp, folks - this is probably it for me until after race weekend and our post-race cruise. I'll check in when I can, but I just don't know how active I'll be with some much going on.

Thanks again to each one of you for everything you've brought to this discussion - all the training posts, the planning, the waiting, all of it! Hopefully I will see each and every one of you at the Expo or out on the course.

Sending good wishes and thoughts to each of you for great runs, fun times and hopes that this race weekend meets AND exceeds all you've planned and trained for.

See you all on the other side!!

Thank you for all the responses to my earlier question. I have one more - where are the ChEAR Squad waivers? I read that I have to have it with me to pick up my packet, but those waivers are not listed with the other waivers.

Thank you and good luck Keels!

I hope I get to meet you and some of the other diners throughout race weekend.

Happy new year everyone!

QOTD: Over the last few months we have all had put in a lot of miles leading up to marathon weekend. During your runs, tell us about something out of the ordinary that you witnessed or had happen to you.

Hope to read some good storied from yall! Have a great day everyone!

Answering this one first -
I almost didn't make it to this weekend! About 8 months ago I was running one Saturday morning in my neighborhood, on the sidewalk. I live in an urban grid area with multiple stop signs, and townhomes that front the sidewalk, with no yards. Well just after I crossed the road at an intersection with the stop sign, I hear HOOOONNNNNKKKK SCREEEEECHHH and it was like slow motion. Someone was running the stop sign and got T boned by oncoming traffic. The oncoming Mercedes swerved to avoid the lady who ran the sign... and wound up on the sidewalk. Thankfully there was an old house on the corner that had a yard, and I had backpedaled onto the yard (and fell on my butt!). The car stopped two feet in front of me. Nobody asked if I was ok, the two women just got out of their cars and started screaming at each other!

Not the way I wanted to get my heart rate going on a Saturday morning! And I haven't run through that area again!

And today's QOTD:
I've only run 5ks and 10ks so far. I am hoping to love the half marathon length - seems like a good challenge to do a few times per year!

This may have been discussed earlier so I apologize if this is a repeat. I've always driven our rental car over to the races, but I think I'll being grabbing a bus this year so hubby will have the car & can bring me a snack during the marathon :)

I like to get to the corrals early so o can be towards the front of my corral - what time would you all suggest I get out to the bus stop in the AM? We're staying at one of the All Star resorts (honesty don't remember which one off the top of my head). Do I need to head out well before the first bus is scheduled to leave to make sure I don't get stuck in a huge bus line?

The last two years I was at AoA and made it on the first bus without any line or issue (showed up about 5 min before it was scheduled to leave). In fact we left on time without a full bus. Personally, I am a time sensitive person so I like to remove variables out of my control (broken down bus, long lines, etc.). So, I'll always be on the first bus, but that's my personality.

Thanks for this. Since this is my first marathon I'm sure I'll be nervous enough without worrying about traffic, crowded buses, lines, so I'll probably aim to do the same.

QOTD

At WDW, I love the marathon as there is so much more to see obviously.

Overall, I like the feeling of accomplishment after the marathon, but I tend to enjoy the half distance more. I think because it isn't as hard on the body as the full.

I hate the 5k most of all because I call it 20 minutes of pain. I usually run as fast as I can the whole time, so don't tend to enjoy myself. Then, afterwards I am exhausted and eat too much because I feel like I just worked out a bunch. Yet barely burned enough calories for a candy bar.
