Marathon Weekend 2016

I believe for the 5k corral placement is based on the estimated finish time you selected at registration but I am not 100% on that

I think you are right. I totally forgot you select that on that registration. :)

Today was my next to last opportunity to optimize my PoT for Marathon Week. Weather could not have been nicer for the race in Raleigh today. Mid-60s and a course through largely shaded green ways.

My goal has been to post a sub-2 hour half and I was able run it in under 1:56, 7 minutes better than my PR! Now I can relax and enjoy the course next weekend.

That is awesome!!! Great job. That's a big PR!

I just wanted to drop an update on my first half I did yesterday! I know many of you on here gave me such great support so I though a recap would be nice for anyone getting ready for one too. I did a "Wheels off" half marathon in Duluth, MN. There were only about 160-180 people running it which was so nice since it wasn't congested - especially where I was in the back HA. The main event was an inline marathon so it was really inline focused. The course was awesome! When we had to be at the start about an hour before beginning it was about 45 degrees and the whole course was right along Lake Superior. The temperatures were perfect and the view was gorgeous the whole time. They really sell it on running on Interstate 35 and going through the tunnels but personally that part was the worst for me - the pavement was grooved for freeway traffic and the sun hit it in a way that was not good for your brain lol. I much preferred the scenic views of the lake and the city from afar - of course getting closer to the city means you're almost done.

All in all I'm very happy with how it went! My goal was to finish with 13 minute mile pace and I was able to finish right at the 12 minute mile pace which was way faster than my training runs and very surprising! Entered my proof of time for the marathon and I'm excited to enjoy the upcoming halfs I have including Wine & Dine knowing I can actually do the distance. :) Thanks again for all of your support! I can't wait to talk more about training and prep for a full with everyone and to actually do the full in January!

Good for you! I find that race pace is significantly faster than training pace with the adrenaline flowing and a sharper focus on performance. It'll be good to be able sit back and enjoy your upcoming races without the pressure.

I'm especially glad for that now, too. I went out for a nice easy recovery run this afternoon and my hamstring went "sproing" on me 3/4 of the way through. It's going to make next weekend's half a bit more of a challenge!

Any run with views of Lake Superior sounds awesome. Thanks for the recap of a very successful race! It is very motivating as I head to my POT race this weekend. Congratulations!

Congrats on a great race. My first race ever, was for POT for last year's ToT. I went into it with a fever and only 3 months of training. My training runs were always over 10 min/mile and I finished the race with a 9:07 min/mile pace. Whenever I race I find someone ahead of me and I challenge myself to pass them. The mental challenge keeps me going.

It is a good feeling when you know you can do the distance of a race isn't.

Correct - 5K and 10K corrals are based on estimated pace entered during registration.
I don't believe that can be true. At the time of my disneyland 1/2 marathon registration I had no time entered other than the "greater than 3:15" estimate for the half marathon...only later did I finally get a 10k race time. That time gave me a 1/2 marathon A, and subsequently I got an A for the 10k as well...could the marathon registrations be that different?

Congrats on sub 2 hour and a awesome improvement of 7 minutes! That is a big difference and something that doesn't come easy.

Congrats on your first half. An automatic PR! The weather and course sound great.

If you submitted a 10K time as PoT, that was used to place you in the half-marathon corral. The 10K would go off of whatever estimated pace you entered. I'm guessing that if your PoT landed you in A for the half, your estimated 10K was fast enough to land you in A for that, too! There are always anomalies, of course - folks who never submit PoT and aren't seeded in the last corral. Or folks who turn in fast PoT's and wind up in far corrals. But outside of challenges, the 5Ks and 10Ks don't take PoT into consideration.

I am hoping for some help on time submissions, I've already submitted a time from a spring USATF certified course (Running with the Cows) 1/2 marathon time was 2:10:29 approx. I just ran another half this weekend at 2:07:52, it was a chip timed race, with online results that can be linked, but it is not a USATF certified course, as it was a small local race. What is everyone's opinion will a 2.5 mins difference really make any difference in corrals? Thanks in advance!

Last time I looked at the RunDisney site (I forget which race) looking for their requirements, I no longer saw the wording that said it had to be a certified race; just that it had to be able to be verified. I would go with the fastest time. This is all it says now:

Proof of time must be provided from an officially timed race reflecting results after January 1, 2014 and must be one of the below listed distances. Runners will be placed in the last corral if the appropriate race distance is not submitted for Proof of Time.

Did you do the challenge?
If you do a challenge, then they use your POT submission for corral placement for all races in that challenge (if you're doing Dopey, this would include the 5K & 10K).
If you're doing a 5K or 10K not as part of a challenge, then the estimated pace you enter during registration is what's used for corral placement. IIRC, challenge registration doesn't have you select an estimated time, it just asks you to submit POT at a later time.

I have one of those friends. He told me he was going to do just enough training to run a full under 2:40:00.
I have a friend like that. Although he doesn't really care what his finish times are. He just happens to effortlessly run 7minute miles or faster. It's actually really amazing to watch.

My best time last year qualifies for Boston....if I was 27 years older....and female.

Missed it by --->| |<---- that much.

I guess my goal for my next marathon will be running a qualifying for the 80 year old male group...and then work my way from there!
This was the best thing I read today.

Hi, I just found out that I will need to bring my kids with me to cheer my husband on for the half. I know buses start running again at 7 and I'm trying to figure out where we should go to spectate. He runs about a 9 minute mile. I don't know what corral that would put that in or his start time but I think that he couldn't be done before 8. Can we spectate from Epcot without a park ticket? Thanks for the help. I'm really stressing all of this...
Thank you guys so much. I guess I will wait to see what corral he's in. I think the pace he entered was 2:15 min half. I'll have to see what his speed is in December :)
I combined your posts. Here is the corral list for marathon weekend last year.wdw-half-marathon-corrals.jpg
Based on your comments he'll likely be in corral e-g Based on prior years that would mean he'll start sometime between 5:39 and 5:45. Leaving at 7 you should be able to make it to epcot to see the finish. It might be hard to find a spot by the fence so we sometimes stand back on the hill and cheer for people.

If you could leave earlier you could try and get to the ttc. You could see him there at mile 4, Walk through the poly To the road it might be 3/4 of a mile then you could see him at mile 7.5 and then take the monorail back to epcot and see him at the finish. (while you are at the poly you should probably get some of the kona coffee from upstairs)

My bias would be to submit the faster time and then email runDisney with the question about it being a race that was chip timed but not usatf certified. If you don't get a response go back to the USATF certified result.

Read that Splash Mountain will have a shorter refurbishment this year! It begins on January 10 through January 14, reopening on January 15 2016, so unless it changes we'll get to ride it this time!

I think as long as they can see the results online with a link you are fine. I think someone posted awhile back about contacting runDisney and they said it didn't have to be certified just with results online. If you are worried contact them just to be safe. Then I would use the 2:07 time, even a few minutes can get you into the next corral up.

My only race that would qualify as PoT for the Marathon happens to be my worst time ever. There are 2 half marathons I could do before the PoT due date, one is the day after my best friends 30th birthday party, the other is this Sunday. I was looking at the one for this Sunday and last year's results show it was a very small field and people in my finish time range (2:30) were very limited even though they say the course remains open and supported till 3:00. The race after my friends birthday is a much larger race and has a bigger range of finish times. I know I should do the one this Sunday but I guess I'm looking for a little encouragement. I like being a middle of the pack, running with others runner, I have a feeling this weekend would be a more sparse crowd at the back.

I would say it comes down to whichever one you feel you will perform better at, even with a smaller crowd do you feel you have a better chance at a good time sunday or after partying perhaps to hard for your friends birthday? that is what I would use as my determining factor not so much worry about the crowd

If you do this Sunday (as long as you are prepared for that mileage right now) then it's less pressure to HAVE to do it the day after your friends bday. You may find that your pace will be better with more "elbow room" and space to run in straight line and not around people?
I agree that it is a little odd to run a race with few people around...but maybe it will be zen for you. Like a training run with no cars or streetlights or dog walkers to contend with??
I'm not a marathoner though so take advise from some of these other long distancers!
