Marathon Weekend 2016

What is DATW?

As @sostacey said, it's Drinking Around the World at Epcot. You start at either Canada or Mexico and have a drink at each of the 11 countries as you make your way around World Showcase. We normally start at Canada and finish with dinner in Mexico before heading back to England for beer & Illuminations (or the college football playoffs as the case may be).

Weather Update: 12/28/15 @ 8:55 AM CST.
5k 1/7 - Low 56, High 74 Sun & Some Clouds
10k 1/8 - Low 58, High 78 Mostly Cloudy & a little rain.
13.1 1/9 - Low 57, High 75 Cloudy with a few showers.
26.2 1/10 - Low 53, High 77 Mostly cloudy.
DATW 1/11 - Low 52, High 62 Colder with periods of rain.

It would be very nice if that weather system could move up a few days. Looks like one or two of the events could get a little wet. Marathon morning is looking decent as of now. Cloud cover and wind from the West @ 5MPH range.

10k 1/8 - Low 60, High 77 Mostly Sunny
13.1 1/9 - Low 59, High 76 Mostly Sunny
26.2 1/10 - Low 59, High 76 Partly cloudy.
DATW 1/11 - Low 60, High 76 Scattered thunderstorms

Interesting to compare the two. The only agreement as of now seems to be the days high's. It will be interesting to see which one adjust. Odds are both are wrong, and it will change 100 more times before race weekend, at which point it will continue to change.

Edit: After looking at a few other forecast, most of them are similar to the weather channels prediction.

Cloud cover is my most fervent wish for the full! 75 and overcast is an entirely different beast from 75 and full sun.

Yessss!!! This super-slow first time marathoner is hoping for cool temps throughout Sunday to keep those of us in the back third of the herd of finishers don't melt in the early afternoon sun :)

If the temps or humidity are up, you'll want a breeze to keep you cooler.
Very true. I guess my wish is more against a strong headwind, that is the one condition that really grates on me. I suppose since this course is basically a circle it wouldn't be much of an issue?

As long as the wind direction remains steady, you'd have roughly equal amounts of headwind & tailwind since the course is pretty much a loop.

So I did get 5 miles in today after missing my long run yesterday (we're in taper town now so eh also between two days at the track I walked 5 miles). But I also drove 5 hrs (round trip) to London for one reason. To see him:

It was worth it. It was 100 percent completely worth it. I got to see in person one of the best steeplechasers of this era run down an equally tough and game opponent in a race that people will be talking about in chasing for a while I think.

Why the long face?

(Couldn't resist!)

Boards been a little slow lately... How is everyone doing? Only a few more days to the big weekend! Do you feel prepared for the race you are signed up for and are you looking forward to making the trip to Disney? One last set of question. Where are you coming from? Are you driving or flying? How long will your trip take you?

My answers.
Still a little sick, but improving ever so slowly.
I trust my training has prepared me for the distance despite a few set backs. A little concerned about hitting my time goal. Very excited about the trip and spending time with my family!
Baton Rouge, LA. Driving, about 11 hours of car time.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Oh, I'll play too!

1. Doing fine. Enjoying getting back into the training routine again.
2. No races for me, but I'm fully prepared for DATW. I'm very much looking forward to the trip, too. A few days of food, drinks, and park rides with my wife before heading back.
3. Erbil, Iraq. Flying, 4 hours to Dubai, 8 hour layover, and then 16 to Orlando.

I'm just recovering from whatever bug has been making the rounds, but should be better by the new year! It band/knee still doesn't feel 100% but managing to stick to my planned taper runs, even managed a slow 12 miles two days ago so think the two weeks rest has helped - thank you all for talking some sense into me!

I'm currently sat sorting out my packing, leave for London on Sunday and my planes on Monday morning. Feeling pretty nervous but I think that's more to do with flying than the races, I'm not the best flyer! I'm coming from Durham in the UK, doing a mixture of both driving and flying and I'm staying for a week at Disney, leave day after the marathon far too excited packing my bags!!

I'm in a bit of a funk today. My 10 mile weekend was only about 9 because my watch stopped working half way through :(, I have started a new job and haven't completely gotten it to gel with my run schedule yet so my week workouts have been nonexistent, my 12 mile this weekend turned into 3 due to being overly cold from rain, and when I woke up early this morning to run my 12 I gave in after 3 due to a headache. This isn't my first half marathon, but I'm a little worried. :sad2::worried: I'm needing some pixie dust today.

Prepared for the race? Yes. I know that if my knee is acting up I may have to walk more than expected, but I'm okay with that.
Excited for the trip? Depends when you ask me.
Coming from NYC, flying into Orlando ... flight is about 3 hours.

1. Hanging in there like a hair on a biscuit. I've been experiencing some pain in my right hip, so I've been taking it easier than I want to, but I feel like I need to.
2. I'm confident in my training. Even without being able to get my last long run in, I know I will knock my first 13.1 out of the park; even if I have to limp to do it. So excited.
3. Columbus, GA. 6 hours of driving.

I echo the sentiment of missing this thread. Although I haven't posted much, I have lurked for most of the year. The 2015 thread is what convinced me to sign up for my first half, and I am actually contemplating a full. And 2018 Dopey? Why not. Let's do this.

You people are awesome.

I am sitting in the Memphis airport- drove in from Little Rock, Arkansas - right now for my trip to Disney! DH and 2 teen DDs and I will enjoy 8 nights as a family vacation first then my niece joins me the Thursday before the race for our first Disney Half! Celebrating my 50th and her 40th birthdays! We are training for our first Full in March so we feel good about our 13.1 miles that day! My only worry is lack of runs the next 10 days and all the FOOD we will enjoy.

Confession...every time I see DATW my brain automatically thinks "Dancing with the Stars." So it paints a fairly funny picture in my head of what you all will be doing on Monday.

1. I am doing ok. I feel like I am sufficiently over an annoying cold that hit me right before Christmas week. It kind of messed up my training but being able to breath normally and not cough makes me feel like super woman again. I missed my run yesterday because of sleet/snow/crazy storm. But back at the old treadmill in the gym tonight.
2. I feel prepared! If I was trying for a PR or for speed I would feel behind, but since I'm really just trying for having fun and getting a few character pictures...I'm totally ready for that. My first "leg" I'm running at my ability just to get to the characters as fast as possible, but then once I enter the park I'm going into sight-see "slow down" mode to take it all in and enjoy it :) Yes, I've practiced that with my running lately. It's easier than running at pace the whole time :)
3. Coming from Chicago-land area. Flight is relatively short but it got pushed back 1 hour 50 minutes which makes me annoyed.

Also I have this horrible weird anxiety fear that the airport will be closed on the day we leave and I will miss my whole vacation....like I've had dreams about this. O'Hare in Chicago was closed yesterday due to weather :(

I've half-told myself that if I keep believing that will happen, then it's bound not to happen and I'll be ok.

Glad you are able to get back into training/running again. Are you just working in Iraq, or is that home? I hate to fly because I'm 6'-5", and a flight that long would be more painful than the marathon. Safe travels!

Hope the cold goes away soon! The crazy thing about the taper is usually you feel more pain/injury than you would during your peak weeks. I think its all mental, the taper is crazy! You also have a long ways to travel! Don't forget your compression socks for the flight home after the marathon. Have a safe trip!

Sorry to hear your not feeling well. I know how you feel about being a little worried, I would be willing to bet we share the same concerns despite knowing what we are capable of. We are both going to be just fine! Congrats on the new job and hopefully you can find a way to get your runs in.
