Marathon Weekend 2016

It looks like I'll be in corral K for the half!

Got my Daisy Duck tutu ready (it looks sassy! Haha). My Tinker Costume is almost done...but Cinderella is killing me!
Hopefully I'll get them ready before Christmas!

Hmm, based on last year's figures, I will be starting AFTER the last corral! (My bib number is in the 15000s). This doesn't really bother me; I am a novice marathoner and not looking for a particular time goal. Have worked my way past walkers before and can do so again.

Does anyone know if you MUST be in your corral at 5 a.m.? I am planning to drive (arriving by 4) and would prefer to hang out in my car as long as possible. I'm guess my wave won't get off until almost 6:30. That's almost an hour and a half to be waiting in place.

On a totally different question, do you carry gels or chomps or jelly beans with you on your long training runs? I am coming from the cycling world. I have done endurance rides up to 10 hours but I usually have a small pack on my bike where I can stow a PBJ sandwich and other snacks. Obviously have no place to store that when running, so I am experimenting with gels. Or do you all run 20 miles without eating anything? (!)

Thanks for all your help. Mostly a lurker, but I am learning a lot. Best to all of you in your final training push and on race weekend!

Liz

They won't cut off the corrals but I wouldn't recommend showing up late especially if your in the last corral. Advice from a vet try to get there early. Roads will get clogged quickly as race time approaches. And it's a half mile walk minimum from where you park to the start. Trust me you would rather be here

I'm bib 30197 for Goofy which puts me in B if the Goofy's are like last year (but 30000s instead of 20000s). That doesn't really make sense... I put in a 1:44 half, how does that get me all the way to B? Especially as my friend submitted a 1:43 half for the full marathon alone and would appear to be in corral C. Has anyone figured this out?

It's not that uncommon for Disney to assign a slightly slower corral for challengers because of the whole multiple races thing.

Anyways with that number most likely you just missed the cutoff for A if the numbers hold.

You don't have to be in your corral at 5am but I wouldn't be there too late either, the race starts at 5:30 and as earlier corrals go off your corral will start to move forward,I would want to be in it as they start moving up.I got to my corral the latest I've ever gotten this year as the national anthem was sung right before the start and that's as late as I would get there. Also remember from the staging area its like a 15-20 minute walk to the corrals. As far as running with gels and chomps I've always done it but I've been trying to lower the amount that I bring with me,for my first fulls years ago I was bringing like 8-10 with me just to be safe.Eventually you realize you don't need that many, they give some on the course as well as bananas and its annoying to carry that many on your waist packs throughout the race.I've been bringing less and only buying chomps or bloks as I've gotten tired of the gels,so I'll bring fewer overall but only the chews and if I feel I need more towards the end of the race just grab some of the GU gels they give on the course.

I personally consume gels on any runs longer than 100 minutes, and nothing for anything less than 100 minutes. Doing a 20 mile training run without any carbohydrate or electrolytes can be done but requires a large pre-loading plan on the days proceeding. Running the 20 miles without any pre-carbs or gels during the run goes down the road of glycogen depletion training which is usually attempted about 10 weeks prior to the event at the latest and is no more than 1 time every three weeks. Glycogen depletion training can be a very tough exercise and needs to be approached with caution. Let me know if this answers your question sufficiently otherwise I can try to go into more detail.

Congrats @DopeyBadger!! Your consistent training is really paying off. Are you following the Hansons marathon plan exactly or have you adjusted it any? Also, are you doing the beginner or advanced plan?

Thanks! I credit my potentially obsessive personality (ask my wife :P) with my gains in training. Only cut one run short since September (because of very dangerous lightening) and have missed/cut short only 5 prescribed runs this year.

The plan I'm following is a personally modified Advanced Hansons. I had 14 weeks between my October marathon and Dopey. I took off completely from running for the first 10 days after the Oct marathon (this allowed my muscles to make a significant recovery and allowed me to jump into training harder/safer than if I had continued running). Then, used a week to acclimate back to slow running. I truncated the Tuesday speed down to 6 weeks instead of 9 weeks and truncated the Strength down to 5 weeks from 7 weeks (still giving enough time to make the physical adaptations desired). I altered the Thursday Tempo to 2 consecutive weeks at a distance rather than 3 (to build to 10, but still slowly). The Sunday Long Run matches the advanced plan as closely as I could (exception made for today's half). The easy Monday/Friday days were maximized to consistently get me close to 90 minutes of running at the prescribed paces (for my pacing chart 6, 7, or 8 miles). Lastly, Saturday easy was adjusted to higher mileage to simulate Dopey as often as possible (most Sat were 10 miles @ 9:14 min/mile to just crest above the 90 min goal). Most of the plan was based on maximizing my prescribed paces to the golden 90 minute training run (just long enough to come close to glycogen depletion but just short enough to not affect the following days workout when paced appropriately).

Oooooh was wondering how my Dopey corral would translate to 5/10k. Think I'll be in C with you!

Bib numbers and I ordered the last items for my outfits today! Been a good day (apart from still resting, although I did do my local Santa Dash 5k today and seemed okayish)!

FUN! Depending on your goals for each race, maybe we can dominate Corral C together!

To all, once the bibs/corrals officially come out I'd be willing to put together a comprehensive Dis'ers corral and timing listing for spectators if people would find benefit in that.

If you find yourself doing this, make a mental note to run a bit with your hands down by your side every mile and then run a bit with your hands clasped behind your back to help alleviate the tightness.

lso, if you are not already doing so I recommend some strength training for the arms, upper back, shoulders and neck. 30 minutes twice/week can make a huge difference on long runs.

At one of the marathon weekend expo talks a year or 2 ago they discussd posture. They talked about holding both arms straight up overhead and deep breathing for a few seconds when needed to. That helped me that year.

Have you tried stretching and foam rolling, the gluts in particular? Many back issues have been found to originate with tight glut muscles. Foam rolling before running (or anytime, for that matter) really seems to help keep my back muscles loose. Add in the IT bands, hammies and hips for a pretty good use of 10-15 minutes.

Thank you all for the great advice I will definitely look into doing the mid run stretch routine roughly every mile or so and see how that helps. I will fully admit that I am terrible when it comes to stretching either before or after running and I do have a foam roller but probably don't use it nearly as much as I should. As for adding in strength training this is another area I need to improve on I keep hearing how much it can improve your running but I still lack the motivation to add it into my routine

I got my BQ today! 3:11:28 in the SA Marathon.

set the following PRs all in one race!

Looks like I'm in corral C for the half/full, which means corral A for the 5K/10K. Woot! Woot!

Congrats to you both

34.3 over the last 4 days was a pretty good test for Dopey

At this point, I feel confident I can do the combined distance. I really just wanted to see what my sustained average pace would be and, frankly, I'm pleased with it. While I'm not fast, even over 16 miles I was never more than an average 13

Id say you guys are both looking good for your Dopey, I still admire you Dopey's immensely

DH and I will just make it into G for the full.

Corral G for the full

Based on last year ill be hanging in G as well, at least I know ill have some good company

do you carry gels or chomps

I used to use Gu's but I have recently switched to Clif Shot bloks (wich is what Disney has on course I believe) and I love them so much more, they are much cleaner and user friendly than the gu's were, using the shot bloks I took two every 3 miles (a little over every 30 mins) on my long run yesterday and than seemed to work pretty well for me

I got my BQ today! 3:11:28 in the SA Marathon. The last 6 miles was an absolute grind as the course goes from being relatively flat to hillier with little fan support on that stretch of course. I think the Boston cut off last year was 2 minutes 28 seconds so I'm hoping my time will hold. For Disney I'd like to hit 3:10:00 which was my goal today, but ran out of gas at the end.

I hope everyone's training runs went well yesterday and/or today and remember, keep on trucking!

Congrats. Huge accomplishment.

Thank for all the info! If those are the same this year, DH and I will just make it into G for the full.

Since you all seem to know a lot more than I do, does anyone know how the Castaway Cay Challenge works? Will we get our bib for that in our marathon packet at the Expo or do they give those out the morning of the 5K, like they do for the regular CC 5K? Is it just a generic number, like they usually do for the CC 5K or since this is part of a challenge is there a specific number assigned to each person? I've been so obsessed over this marathon I've hardly even thought about the cruise portion and the 5K.

From what I heard on the Mickey Miles podcast, you get the bib at packet pick up. If I remember correctly there is a different area for this race that you will need to go to.

The bib #'s aren't making much sense to me. Someone I know that is running is in the 14,000's and the POT submitted isn't much different than me and I am in the early 2000's. Based on last year I am in F and he would be after the last corral.

As for fueling. I bring nothing unless I run 10 miles or more. Once I get into the longer miles I just store stuff in my water belt pouch.

According to last year's break down I will be in K. However K and L were also the 5:00 to 5:30 time frame. The time frames for each corral will be different this year. I am not a 5 hour marathoner. I am not doing any challenges this year.

Looks like K for me, with a chance of being bumped to L. I was in N two years ago, so I'm fairly pleased!

Right, but they seem to be putting me in a faster corral, not a slower one. We'll just have to wait and see...

Regarding the whole gels/20 mile/100 minute thing...
This doesn't mean a thing for anyone else (experiment of one and whatever), but here's my experience: You start off thinking you need to bring 25 gels, a granola bar, four gallons of gatorade and a whole pizza. After a while, you realize you don't need the pizza and all that gatorade is making you sloshy. Some time later, you're down to a 20 oz handheld of water and a gel in your pocket. And sometimes you don't take the gel. And if it's cold, you don't finish the water either. So instead, you just stick $2 in a baggie in your pocket, and maybe a gel just in case. Sometimes you use the $2 to buy a bottle of water, or maybe a gatorade. Or a slurpee if it's hot. Or nothing. Or you've spent your $2 by mile two. Seriously, just eat a bagel and head out the door. Don't stress about "needing" this or that. You'll figure things out, even if it means you still need the pizza. It's just running.

tl;dr - My wife yells at me a lot because she's always washing running shorts with a baggie containing $2 or a gel.

Huh well your not the only case. Guessing by last year's I'm in K though my POT should put me in L (not that I'm complaining I'm aiming for the 5:00 range which was what the K corral was last year). I'm thinking their must have been more slower POT submissions this year. Meaning they had to use more corrals for those with slower PoTs.

Not running related, but I am so happy that Alabama won the SEC Championship game last night, making it back to the playoffs. This will definitely make not running these races easier since the playoffs take place in January when we will be in WDW.

Looks like we will have opposite interests on New Years Eve! Spartans first chance at a National Championship since 1966. Hoping for a great game!

@LSUlakes and I are going to be enemies this bowl season! Which is crazy, because while Tech is my favorite team - LSU is probably my favorite non-Texas/Big 12 team.

In other news ...

Had my first legitimate race-related "cry" today - but that's good. It's put me in a good space because I work through all the crazy emotions that this damn race weekend brings up for a first timer.

It's just a weird day all around - a year ago today, I was stuck in the middle of a 15-day work trip in Las Vegas (I promise you, it's not as fun as it sounds), and I was just starting this running journey. I'd told my two girlfriends my ridiculous goal of running the Disneyland Half in 2015 - one thought I was thinking too big and needed to keep to smaller distance races closer to home, "so I can come support you!" (spoiler alert: she never did), and the other - Dr. S - thought that the goal I had in mind was a good starting point, but should be bigger.

And here I am. My husband just finished hanging my first medal holder on a prominent wall (NOT the wall I picked for it, BTW) in our house, and I'm a little bit beside myself.

I've come a long way, and I know each of you have as well - in conquering fears and starting a running journey to reaching levels of performance that only the elite few on this planet can do.

I just want everyone here to know that I'm proud of you - of every single step you've taken up until this point, and I can't wait to run with you, cheer you along or even support you if you need it.

And I also want to thank each of you (even those of you not running Marathon weekend!) - because it's y'all that have turned my "silly" dream into an obsession. My bank account, however, has other views about this. :D

Let's do this.

Thanks to all who posted the links to the bib numbers and last years corrall placements. I ended up with a Dopey bib number of 20885 which based on last year puts me as the first number assigned to corrall E. That is kind of weird but very exciting. Last year was my first time running a RunDisney Race and did Goofy out of Corrall P. Way stocked! One more weekend of long runs, as I mimic Dopey with a 3 - 6 - 10 - 20 and the taper begins!

That's awesome - congrats!! And good luck on your sim week - it was NOT easy for me, but I'm glad I did it and it made me ever more hyped up for the actual weekend.

I can't find myself or my Dad or Sister when I follow that link. Also there are only bib numbers between 60005 and 65201 which doesn't seem right...

Did you change the event in the dropdown menu? Right now it sounds like you're searching the 10K (at least that's what has bib numbers in the 60000's), so you'd need to switch to Dopey.
