Marathon Weekend 2016

Two hours to fast pass selections. I remember when November 7th sounded so far away! First long run this weekend since my last marathon, excited to see how I respond to the longer time.

I must be the only person on Earth that doesn't do Fastpasses. I only ride 1 or 2 rides each trip and I just pick the ones I want and get to them early. I haven't even bought my tickets yet.

On a positive note, the pain I was having while running is now gone. I did 5 miles last night and this morning I went back out before work. At 5 miles I was feeling no pain so I pushed through for a couple more miles. If I didn't have to work I could have done even more. I was worried for a while that I wouldn't get back to normal. No more PF or anything. Now I need to start ramping up the miles and get back to respectable numbers by the end of the month.

This is going to be here before we know it!!!

You may want to try now, someone in the theme parks section is reporting they were able to get in at 9:30.

Quick marathon training question:

I had scheduled an 18 mile run-walk session for this weekend. Unfortunately, two of my dogs got into something on a walk, and are both fairly sick. I need to be able to be home to check on them and give them anti-nausea meds every 2-3 hours. Considering I average about a 14/min mile, there's no way I can do 18 miles in one session (without a break).

I've heard Jeff Galloway talk about adding up mileage for the day to get in your training when you can't do a single long run. I know it's not the ideal situation, but my idea is to do 6 miles first thing in the morning, 6 miles at lunch, and 6 miles right before dinner. I know I can get those miles in near my house (rather than going to my normal long run trail). Running near my house I'll be able to check in on the dogs without being out for too long. I'm also going to try to get in a 1 hour HIIT class tomorrow to make sure I get in some more intense cardio spurts.

Any thoughts on this? Again, I know it's not ideal, but I figure getting in the mileage spread out over a few runs in one day is better than not getting in the mileage at all.

As an aside, I'm also doing the Avengers Infinity Gauntlet next weekend, so I know between the half and then all the walking around the parks and to/from the hotel, I'll get in at least 20 miles next Sunday, so perhaps I don't need to stress too much about getting in 18 miles this weekend.

Saw a report that one of the new sections of the MK parking lot (former WDW speedway) was open today.

Just tried and am all set now. Surprised to see several options already full. I really liked the old fast past system better, seemed to offer better opportunity to create the day as it went. Anyway, got what I was hoping to so I am happy.

I'm actually hoping that RunDisney starts doing the night before event like they did for W&D, because it would be worth every dollar I spent.

The Expo today was an absolute debacle (I was there at 10:15 a.m.) and by the time I got to the register, it looked like locusts had blown through.

For Dopey, I guess I'll wait in line early (since I can drive), but now? If I have a chance to throw money at the issue, get my bibs and shirts, do some shopping and get a meal, I'm going to do it.

Today was awful.

I am so used to how DL does their expo (especially the DLH) that last year when we did W&D (our first FL race) I was surprised how short the expo was! I plan on going to the WDW expo the first day; I'm sure it will be a nightmare, but luckily, I'm not trying for any Dopey merch.

It would be better than nothing, but it would not help as much as you think. You are spreading out the three runs too much. Why are you taking hours between each run? If you really only need to take care of the dogs, take as little time as possible between sessions if you really want to build up the endurance.

See, the thought behind endurance training is basic - you work muscles enough that other muscle fibers have to be engaged later in the run. Gradually, over the course of the run, more and more muscle fiber is engaged. If you take long breaks, this does not happen. The main muscle fiber being used has time to recover - not fully, but sufficiently that you will engage less surrounding muscle fiber over the course of the 18 miles. Make sense?

So, spread it out if you must, but the breaks should be as short as you can manage otherwise you will not gain as much from the run as you should. But life is a compromise. We do what we can and hope for the best.

Good luck!

The expo isn't a huge thing for our group so likely pops and me will go by ourselves after check in on wed to grab our 5k bibs, our shirts and pre-ordered pins. I'm hoping to pre-order a dooney for my birthday (week after we get home so I'm allowing the splurge if they are cute!)
Think that will be a pretty quick trip? We probably will be there about 1pm on wed. No big need to shop the booths since there's a bazillion expos in Chicago (going to one today!) and 5k merch is pretty slim probably?

We booked our FP+ and got some good stuff!
The parade at 3 (if still at expo kiddo can still watch it with grandma and daddy), A&E at 5:40-6:40 after dinner at Plaza, and mine train right after that :)

Think I can make it to expo and back to MK in time for parade at 3? We land at 11:45 and stay at bay lake tower. We'd leave for expo as soon as checked in.

Also asking for anyone who has cabbed. Would it be quicker to cab to expo or wait for a bus if we want to get there ASAP?

Excellent point. Thanks so much for your thoughts!

sadly we wont be able to do our fast passes until we arrive as we are using the "salute to service" discount and thus wont have our tickets until we actually arrive, but we are really going to be taking our time and mostly hitting highlights anyway so its not as big of a deal for us, the one biggie is 7DMT but we are going to magic kingdom the Monday after marathon (assuming I can still walk) and so I don't think it will be AS crowded then as it might be during the weekend

I would just get in as many miles as you can and then count next weekend as a long run. Between the 19 miles your running and all the walking, you will be doing plenty of miles. That's just my opinion and probably what I would do personally.

The last two years we've stayed at Art of Animation. My family met me at mile 16.5. Not a large crowd there, some DJs, a big screen, and I was able to meet up with them easily. This is at the intersection with ESPN sports complex and Art of Animation.

Yaaasss! Found my spot (thanks @DopeyBadger :wave2:).

I'll be waiting my fellow Disers with my "Hi five Pixie Heart for Pixie Dust!" Sign around there!

I'm completely against UBER so a taxi is what I'll go with. I was asssuming taxis weren't available from disney property but that was a dumb assumption. Thx

@Z-Knight I was wondering the same. Since it seems ok to walk over there, I guess that's what I'll do. Maybe we could walk over there together (I intend to go really early).

Is anyone thinking about attending to the Cool Down Party?

The Cool Down party is the free one? We might attend, depending how broken the marathoners are. Lol!

On another note, did you guys read about W&D course being shortened due to weather? They completely avoided AK. Hopefully @Keels is ok and gives us a report! I'll be interested to read how many miles it actually was. Some were saying 10, while others were saying 7!

Ill be looking for you!!

That is our plan we have an ADR at TRex and we always wind up at Downtown Disney/Disney Springs for our major souvenir shopping anyway so its a win win

I heard it wound up being 7ish which sucks for all those that trained specifically for this race or were running their first half but at least they still got to run something, Haven't seen anything from @Keels yet but hopefully everything went ok for her
