Well, as promised, here is my first of many online journals that I hope will encourage and bring in other Canadian runners into this discussion, with advice, encouragement and support. This is my online journal to help me get ready for a half marathon in Calgary in July and the half marathon in WDW January 2007.
Just to let you know a little bit about me....I have been on these boards since 1999. I am a full time third year nursing student, I have 2 part time jobs, and a large immediate family. No kids and no significant other. I am 5'2" and weigh in at 145 lbs (not to give too much away). I started running casually about 3 years ago, and have since gotten more serious about it. Last year, I ran my first 5 km fun run, and was so excited when I completed it, that I felt my first runners high! Then, a couple of months later, I ran an 8 km run and again, felt an excitement that is beyond describing. I am not an athletic person and I look back at photos of me from before my college/university days and am somewhat disappointed that I let my weight get to what it is today, so I started running to help.
Just last week, I purchased the book "Running start to finish" written by John Staton. You can purchase this at any Running Roon, and I strongly recommend it. I will be quoting from it on a weekly basis to help others in their quest for either physical fitness or challenges to themselves. Personally, I am seeking both right now.
One quote, from the very beginning of the book that encourages me right now is:
"Running burns fat at a high rate, relieves stress, improves self - esteem and helps you sleep better. It also improves your energy levels, endurance, strength and muscle definition, increases your odds against heart diseases, improves your cardiovascular system and helps you relax. Running can help depression, give you a positive self attitude in everything that you do, raise your metabolic rate, polish up your self-image, awaken your sex life and give you that "I feel good" feeling about yourself and your whole life. You will work, play and sleep with improved attitude towards life - not a bad paycheck for an investment of 30 to 40 minutes, five days a week, to do something we once called play".
When I read that, I started to realize the importance of doing something physically active. I am such a busy person, yet I will ensure that I take the time to do this everyday! So, I started to seriously think about the steps in my life I had to take to ensure a healthier me. This is NOT a New Years Resolution, this is a step towards a better me! I actually schedule in my daily run. I am not an early riser, so I don't go first thing in the morning. I choose to do it after my dinner. I am more active at that time anyways, so I ensure that I take the time to do it then.
The first time I got on the treadmill, I thought I was going to die. I didn't want to complete the 5 km that I had promised myself I was going to do. But after 10 min, it wasn't so bad and then finally, I was done! I didn't run the whole thing, but I completed the mileage. It was hard, I'm not going to lie, but I did it! I have run 3 times since and I will update you next week and provide you with more information from the book! If anyone would like to join this discussion, feel free to add your tips and your advice.
Until next week, have a great week!
