Marathon Training Thread for the week of 9/27-10/3

I too was concerned about the time but tonight I did 2 miles in 35 minutes and that included my warm-up and my cool down. I was really moving in the middle of this walk. My DS was with me even though he already ran a 2K today at his "Run for Joy". He came in 27th in his group and that allows him to go to the regional meet on October 15th. He was very tired walking with me though. So, for the next two weeks he'll be walking with me to try and better his time for the next meet. Apparently, my DD cried the whole time I was gone because she wanted to walk with Mama.

Anyways, I can move when I want to and I'm hoping when I see that sweeper truck these old joints will kick it into high gear. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Have a great night and a super Thursday tomorrow!!:Pinkbounc :bounce:

Well, ya'll brightened my whole day! I checked in on the thread this morning really quick before school started...

Marathoning for Mortals is written by John "The Penguin" Bingham and Jennifer Bingham. He has some other books out, like No Need for Speed. I love M4M, read it twice! It was so motivating and really gave me an idea of what I was getting into. I would recommend it to ANYONE!

I swam today for 45 minutes. Does anybody here ever use the steam room? I am beginning to like it! Does it do anything for me? Good? Bad?? Also, I have been doing my running on the treadmill now that I have the membership (I like watching TV, listening to music, reading captions, running, drinking, and wiping sweat off my body all at the same time... it makes me feel like i am multi-tasking and VERY important.), but does this affect my running? I am planning to continue doing my long runs outside, if that helps?

Karen - Good job getting back on the wagon. We all fall off sometimes! At least you came back to us! I hang my head in shame for a few days then come back...just like a puppy. You made me so happy this morning! I felt loved all day just imagining all my moms on here taking on that poor, wimpy, yet still quite beautiful personal trainer... I would pay money for that. Am I the youngest person on this thread? 22? Any takers for 21? 20? 19? ... Wow... I feel young again! Here I was feeling old because all day long I have 9 year olds asking me how old I am. I was born in the EIGHTIES!

decaff - for some reason post-workout brownies are the best ones. I don't know how they make them, but mmm.... so tasty!

Meme - Beer is a food group, isn't it? I'm pretty sure it is near the bottom, with the grains. I mean, really, it's nothing more than liquid whole grain toast, right? Hmm.... That's how I see it anyway.

SPEAKING OF BEER: Who wants to have a Jellyrolls meet? Friday? Sunday? Monday? I'm up for two... perhaps even three. It is my FAVORITE place in the WORLD! You should let me know, so I can start preparing! (I have CDs with every song we heard there at spring break. that is what I work out to. I am concentrating on knowing every word to every song. It is, after all, a sing along bar!) COME JOIN ME!

Susan - Way to set your goals! If everything I ever put in print were true, I would be one heckuva skinny person. I have drafted many get skinny plans.... But, that's me. I shall not crush your plans, because you are probably way better than me... and maybe you don't procrastinate like I do?

We must resist the temptation... we must resist the temptation....

Cheryl - Wow... Great job getting back out there for that walk. You really are so motivated and motivating. Sorry I've not responded to your PMs, I'm horrible at email!

Lily - Did you get a new haircut? What do you think of Windsor Pilates?

Keep it up, ladies! Reading your posts makes me tired!

Ashley:wave2:

Just thought I better report back and let you ladies know I really DID get back out there and I walked another 55 min :D I'm not sure of my mileage for today because I did part of the walk on our area bike trails but I felt like I was walking fast.

Keep up all the great work everyone. I probably won't get back here again before Sun. because I'm work a long day tomorrow and then I'm going away with some friends for the weekend :teeth:

Meme Have a GREAT cruise on the Magic!!!!! At least it doesn't look like you'll have any hurricanes interfering with your cruise.

Bev Have a GREAT time in Williamsburg!!!! I just found out I will have the opportunity to go on a school trip there in the spring with my DD. We sure didn't go on field trips like that when I was in 5th grade.

Keep moving everyone :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Cheryl:sunny:

And, piggy-backing on Cheryl's post, I did do my 45 minutes on Tuesday night. :bounce: The hardest part WAS tying up the laces and opening up the door. I didn't get time yesterday-meetings all day, but I did some stretches while I was waiting in line at the bank. :) I will get to Curves tonight.

Beer is a food group, isn't it? I'm pretty sure it is near the bottom, with the grains. I mean, really, it's nothing more than liquid whole grain toast, right? Hmm.... That's how I see it anyway.

That's JUST what my DS and I were talking about yesterday! I was telling him that he needs to work hard and eat right, you know, veggies and grains, milk and meat, and he asked: "is barley a vegetable? I replied that the hops etc in the beer doesn't count WHAT! No NO smilie??

Sounds like we're all on the move. It really is NICE to walk outside in the evening when it isn't to hot (or cold!). The sunsets have been beautiful.

Take care, everyone. Remember: Slow and steady wins the race. . . and the Donald medal.

And I'm carrying a pocketful of tacks to spread in front of that sweeper truck!

Hi all!

I just wanted you to know that I haven't dropped off the face of the earth. I'm not exactly doing what I would hope to be doing in regards to diet and exercise (sometimes chocolate is a necessary theraputic tool...isn't it?). I'm planning on getting back on track in the next couple of days.

I've decided to do my best not to get swept. However, if it happens I've decided to buy myself a medal/jewelry to commemorate the effort it has taken me to get to the point where I will attempt a half-marathon. No matter what our times end up being, we all deserve to be rewarded for all the work we've put into this.

We must resist, we must resist........

I think in order for this to work you must chant it off and on throughout ther entire day! Unfortunatley I did not resist yesterday, and as a result, I felt so SICK that I couldn't walk! But, I've learned my lesson this morning. I don't ever want to be that sick again!!!!! So, this morning I will go an do my 3 miles and tonight I'll try to make up the 2 miles I missed yesterday due to my slight food indescretion.

This Sunday I walk my first ever 10K. I'm a little excited and a little afraid- I don't want to be the last one in.

Has anyone ever gone to the WDW Marathon site and gotten to the last pages of the results of the walk for times?? Just wondering.

I have a confession to make:

I HATE THE TREADMILL!!!!

OK, there, I said it. Adimitting the problem is half the battle right?

I didn't used to hate it, but now that I am up to 90+ minutes for an endurance run/walk I just dread getting on the thing. The weather is gorgeous today but I don't have a plan for outdoor running that works with my work day. I better think about that. Yesterday I intended to do an hour on the treadmill but instead I did 20 minutes on the elliptical trainer, 10 min on the stair climber and 20 minutes on the treadmill. It was a great workout, but I need to get more runs in at this stage.

I think I will try to get out on the bikepath this weekend.

Susan-- congrats to your DS for his placing! That's great! Looks like it runs in the family :)

I will resist... I will resist... I will resist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dawn

Dawn, I think that's a great idea. I was thinking about getting a pearl in Japan in Epcot and having a piece of jewelry made. That may be a good 'Disney related' reward for crossing the STARTING line! ::yes::

Got a date with the treadmill tonight......it's been feeling neglected lately!

Just checkin in to say hello.

Karen, thanks for hollering at me! Seven miles!! WOW!! You've come a long way, baby!!

Things are still busy here from our storm. We're still boiling water, using bagged ice, etc. I did manage to get to Walmart last night to replace most of our staple Fridge and freezer food! Other than grilling throughout the storm, I have only fixed one home cooked meal since then! Otherwise it's been hot plates from the Red Cross or MRE's! Bu tnow the kids have their favorite stuff back in the freezer and I have yogurt again, so life is getting back to normal. Our eating plan is way off and for now, I'm cooking comfort food (high fat!) for my mom!

ohmom, I hope you make lots of money for your cruise! We are so behind on the money thing if we do end up making our trip in November. It's looking more like we will be going than we won't, but stay tuned. BTW, I think of you every day. The Red cross is serving up hot meals here two times a day. I go down and pick up plates for my mom and also her neighbor. The group running the relief center is a dissaster team of Southern Baptists from Ohio! They are all lovely people.

Monica- we didn't even get a drop of rain from Jeanne. But the good thing about going through a storm like Ivanis that if we get another the damage HAS to be minimal! All the trees are already down and weak roofs have certainly been spotted and are being addressed!::yes:: Mom's Ok...sleeps most of the time. This morning I asked her if she was ready for her meds and she said yes, but only the "pretty" ones. She'd like just the blues and whites and not take any greens, reds, or browns today! It's just the medication talking, but some of the stuff she says is so funny. I think that is sort of what keeps us sane. :rotfl: PD back at you for that knee. I hope it is better. :wizard:

Bev, enjoy the vacation! I am hoping to take the kiddos to Williamsburg next year. Enjoy the seafood!! I'm making shrimp scampi for supper and garlic bread. Yum! That should take care of our butter quota for the year!lol You'll enjoy the new windows! We did that at our old house and one day I hope we can do it here. These Windows are a weird size and there are so many of them!!::yes::

Cheryl, it's amazing how quickly the days are shortening, isn't it? Good for you on getting in your 60 minutes!!

Tigerlily- I'm so glad your hubby is recovering so well!! That's great that you have him as a partner on the trail!

Sundie- your trip is fast approaching! Are you packing yet?

Maryliz- good for you for making it to Curves when the week is hectic! A 6 mile walk should keep you moving toward the marathon! We still have time! Don't discount those 6 miles!

Debbie, I've wondered about the sweeper, too. I'm glad you asked. I keep picturing myself being one step ahead of those street sweepers with the spinning brushes! :rotfl: Thanks for taking the tacks!

Ashley! I loved your post. Sounds like your perspective on beautiful Chris is right on target...and so is your training!! You know, the best nutrition advice isn't worth anything if it isn't "doable" in your life...do what works for you. BTW I'm FORTY! And yesterday was a monumental event in that I broke down and bought reading glasses...<sigh> I'd love to do Jellyrolls...but just in case my trip falls through, I'll wait and see what everyone has planned and then jump in if I can. If we take our family trip in NOvember, I should be there in January. If we don't, then I probably can't...the kids won't want me to go...

decaff- I never wrote again last week. I'm so sorry for you losing Sadie. We had to put down my boxer when I was pregnant with Milly. Losing her was so very hard. Anyway, I just wanted to send you a hug and tell you I understand. How are you doing now?

MEME- HAVE A GREAT CRUISE!!

Susan- Good luck on the long wak and the sale! Looks like everyone is having sales right now!

ibounce- Your trip is fast approaching, too!!

tw1nsmom- we won't get swept!! You will do fine!! But...jewelry should still be considered! ;)

we must resist, we must resist, we must resist, we must resist :rotfl:

Look! I learned to do colored fonts from that one!!::yes::

Ok, that is it. Gotta boogie and go check out mom's "pretty" pills again and go pick up her hot plate at the red cross.

Have a great day everyone!! You are all so inspiring!!
~~Beth

Dawn,

I love your idea about rewarding yourself!!

I'm all for it. We are working very hard. Like I tell people, if I do get swept it won't be because I didn't try my best.

Heck, a year ago, walking to the post office in our town was a marathon. Now I can get there in about 4 minutes.:Pinkbounc :bounce:

Now, off to do some research on nice things to buy at Disney. I can always check stuff out when I go there in five and a half weeks.::yes::

I got on the treadmill, but didn't do what I set out to. I did 4.35 miles in 60 minutes so I'm pretty happy. I made plans for childcare for Saturday so I should be able to get out on the bikepath (weather permitting).

Evening everyone! I'm running through right now. I will post more later. I just wanted to say that I've read and everyone is doing it! This is great to hear everyone's progress good or bad. Keep at it!

Oh, and you know I used this tonight:
we must resist, we must resist, we must resist, we must resist
While it didn't work completely, it stopped me before I got too far.

Tomorrow is "Friday Date Night" with DH--dinner and a movie. I have the evening off for walking/running. I plan on a longer one Saturday, just not certain how long.

Tlily - thanks for the quote :) i'll keep that in my head this weekend!

i dont' have time to read everyone's so sorry! garage sale in full swing here started yesterday! i sold $370 worth of furniture and 'treasures'! wowser! BUT -- not good for my training schedule -- i haven't excercised since Tues and not kept my food journal for TWO DAYS!

cyber slap my hand!

anyhow -- i'm journaling today, i may continue the rest days until next Sunday and then start my 14 week marathon for mortals schedule -- not maybe -- I will start that sunday -- so I think i'm convincing myself to enjoy a few days of rest while I can.

this retail thing left me totally exhausted yesterday!!

i'm thinking of everyone! keep training! eat well!

Well- I got my 3 miles done last night. Did it in 52 minutes- so I met my record of 17:20/mile. Sometimes, I wonder if I'll get to the speed I need to for this marathon. Maybe I'll learn a little about flowin' with the crowd this weekend and I'll naturally speed up. It was klind of frustrating last night walking because I kept telling my DH that I felt like I could run, and wanted to run, but that I didn't dare because I knew if I did I'd mess my back up again. I was walking as fast as I could- so fast, in fact, that my calves were aching! It would've been a relief for my calves to have been able to run! Does anyone hvae any suggections for this problem? I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Mom- You da BOMB! You did ok yesterday in the sale didn't you! WOW!!! For some reason, I'd feel ok about missing training if I was making that kind of $$$! Good for you!!

pluto- 4.5 miles in 60 minutes is nothing to sneeze at! I think that is a wonderful time! It sure goes meyond the time you have to maintain to keep the pace for the half! Good luck getting what you p[lan to do on Sunday done. I think that's beyond the call to get child care on Saturday so you can work out. Oh- BTW- I'm not particularly fond of my TM either! I used to like it a lot, But walking on it now is , well, just plain BORING!

Susan- doesn't it just amaze you when you think about the fact that walking to the post office was an all day process a year ago??? WHen I look back at what I use to do and what I do now it really puts things in prospective. I like your attitude about getting swept- because that's kind of where I'm at righth now. I have worked so hard to get to where I am. I know as of this morning that I CAN get 7 miles done in this marathon. As long as those 7 miles aren't the important miles that have to get done where the sweeper can catch you- I'll be good to go! If I get swept- then I'm proud anyway. I'm with you and Dawn- let me know what you find in the way of nice jewelery from WDW if we get swept! maybe one of those personalized watches from the watch store at MGM. We can get the guy to draw the Sorcerer's Apprentice broom- and have them write somethign about getting swept! :teeth:

Beth- How great to hear from you! Did you just now get your electric back? Sounds like you've had some gourmet meals around your place the last few weeks! It also sounds like your Mom is making up for a lifetime of hard work with all the sleep she is getting now. When my dad had his heart attack- he said some of the funniest thigns we ever heard! WHy- he even escaped from his hospital room (he's ex- CIA) had the whole hospital looking for him and when a male nurse found him, he was in search of what he called "lewd" women! MEN!!! Or maybe I should say .... DRUGS! Anyway- give your mom hugs from me.

Jackie- it looks as though there's a group of us that are in for buying jewelery while in WDW this January. Did you get to talk to your treadmill last night?

Where is GRAMMY????? She hasn't posted since Tuesday! I'm having Grammy withdrawl!

Dawn- it looks as though you have a few followers for the "If I get swept, I still deserve something great" idea!

Cheryl- I'm proud of you for continuing your walk. I would've come back, posted and then just pretended to do it. Then- everyone would've been gushing at how really wonderful and devoted I was! ;) But you- you have to ruin it for me - so now if I ever do that, I REALLY have to do it!!!

Debbie- I know exactly waht you mean about the hardest part of your walking beng putting on your shoes and tying them up! That's why I've started doing it as soon as I feel even an inkling of desire.

Well everyone- I'm outta here! Have a good day everyone. I have to do my 3 miles today, then tomorrow is a rest day and then I do my VERY FIRST EVER 10K on Sunday morning. I'll post my time for you on that on Sunday. BYE!!!

karebear1--Karen, good for you and your mileage last night. I am pushing for you to do well on Sunday! I know what you mean about the calfs aching while walking and not so bad while running. I find exactly the same thing. I at least am able to run, but hesitate to do too much as I don't want to injure my knee again. I don't have an answer for you, just being a partner in pain is all.

ohMom--Molli, what a great effort you have put into that garage sale. You will be on plan after this and not lose anything I am sure. You are in a good place. Stay in this now! You can do it!

Plutosmyfav—Sundie, You know I agree with your TM comment. I am NOT going to be happy when this weather drives me inside.

Susan—Ontario—Jewelry, why that is a Wonderful idea! It is a fine w(h)ine here. “Buy me jewelry.” Is a chant I have on many occasions.

trola2—Beth, it is so good to hear from you. I am so sorry that you are still going through this difficult time. Praying that you have all you need soon. Thanks for thinking of us even while you are going through all of the things you are.

ibouncetoo—Jackie, hope that you have been paying more attention to that neglected TM then. Don’t want to let it get too dusty.

tw1nsmom—Dawn, you still have time. Don’t give up. I like your jewelry idea and will make it part of my plan to purchase that one item that will make me smile.

Debbie, I am so glad you figured out how to tie those laces! That is really the worst part. Hmmm, barley a good food group. Now I really like that idea! Tell DS I’m with him.

LittleMissMickey--Ashley, I will definitely find JellyRolls time. Barley is my new grain! Looks like you are really on a plan and it will work! Keep it going. Thanks for the book info. I will be looking for it as soon as I can get to the library, well order it online probably. As for your question about TM and long runs. I have heard that the TM will give a different “gait” than the real “trail” but I kind of did both last year when I had that time. TM certainly helped me get better time than not doing it and I also cross trained in the pool. I think you have a great plan going and it should work for you. Just be certain to be careful to not do too much without some sort of recovery time planned in. Lastly, don’t worry about being our “baby” here. We love that. Don’t feel too old as I would have to be feeling much older yet—than my 54 young years here. ;)

Susan—Ontario, You are so lucky to have a walking/running partner in your DS. My DH went with me on the trail this past week one time. However, he was on the bike and was way out of my sight that I didn’t really feel him there. I hope that you can work up this training together.

Cheryl N. WI, so good that you are being honest about your workout. Now there is real commitment there. Keep up with your good work.

Tiger Lily 03—Lily—me, I did my power walking yesterday as DH was at PT. I was able to get in 52 minutes and not sure how far but I'd say about 3 miles plus a bit. Today is my off day as I said. I just wanted to remain inspired as we go do dinner and a movie. I will probably pass on that popcorn, but not on the barley later. :teeth:

Oooh Oooooh that jewelry thing. I know just what I am going for. Last time I was there this past summer I found a really nice Mickey locket that I will look to get and put in a pic of this event. If I can find it online somehow I will show you what it looked like. Basically a silver Mickey head that opens to put teeny tiny pics in.

With all these jewellry options we may just have to have something for both starting and finishing the race.

Karen, I've found that (don't laugh everyone) if you wiggle your bum a little bit while you walk it pushes your legs forward and you can go faster without running. (It also helps take the pressure off your calves. I've found my calves hurt when I haven't warmed up properly.) Be careful not to overdo the wiggling or you will have a very sore back end and maybe your hip. I started it a few weeks ago a few seconds at a time and now I can do it for most of my fast walk. It really helps loosen the pants in that area as well.::yes::

Give it a try. Good luck on your 10K!! it will motivate you to keep on training.

Have a great weekend everyone!!!:sunny:

It has been a week since my Sadie left us and I am really doing better than I expected. There have been awful times like walking in the petfood aisle by mistake, seeing some one running with their puppy, and leaving for my run and not having her bring me the leash. My youngest daughter needs to deal with it. She is avoiding all talk about it. I'm going to take her to buy a statue for the puppy garden this weekend. The girls had a game on Monday that was a hard fought tie, a game last night that one DD won 1-0 and the other got a hattrick. She was a liitle pumped. On Wed. night , my DH called and wanted me to meet him at the Green Mill(local nice bar/eatery) for Jimmy Buffet night. Well, I did n't have the free pizza(very good by all accounts) I had hotwings with blu cheese dressing (YUMMY) I did have a few margaritas. I have been so good for so long. I didn't feel guilty at all. Tomorrow I will do a long run and then off to a noon soccer game. I am going to try to refinish a computer table and a old dining table this weekend. I love to do that. Next Sat. I am having a garage sale. Tonight is Homecoming for both girls so I will see them for 5 min. and they will both be off to the football game even though it is 42 degrees with a 15 mile an hour wind. BRRRRR. You know teenagers, never too cold or too hot to have fun.

Karebear - Good luck. It is scary to start a 10K but you'll find your pace and the people are sooo nice. You will take off time on your miles and not even notice! Good luck! You will do fabulous!!!
Ohmom: I am doing my garagesale next Sat.I haven't done anything since Wed. We'll get back on the training track soon.
Little MissMickey: Okay - first timer to Orlando - What is JellyRolls? It sounds like they serve barleypop. I love barleypop!! Where is it? Thanks
Susan: Really , wiggleing your bum on a training walk!ha-ha. I would love to see that . I'll even give it a try. Since I'll try anything once.

My signature is goofed up. Can't get the 5th smileyface to wave, only have 1/2 my August challenge clippy and can't get my Sept. clippy to show. Who is the clippy guru? HELP!!

Have a Fab Friday and Super Saturday!!

decaff38--Beckie, it looks like you need to use
{img}http://www.mrspoppypuff.com/WISH/wishchallengesept.gif{/img}
replace the {--} with [ brackets ] and drop off the colon : on the end of what you have. That should do it.

I am glad that you are dealing with things a bit better and it is good that you notice your DD needs to as well. It osunds like you have a good way to bring her out with the statue. We all need to go through that process when it is our time to grieve. (and yes, it is painful) :hugs: to you and family.

Susan--Ontario, I like your thinking girlfriend! More jewelry! ::yes:: Even though you were replying to Karen, but I may try the "shake your booty" style. I was going to try to get the "swing" of it somewhere. I know I can imporve my pace with the proper technique. I just need to figure out the proper style.

OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS!!! My DH just just got home with our race packets!!! I am number 129. It's so exciting- don't know why, but it is. I got a free shirt too!! WOOOOHOOO- I'll take pics and post on Sunday!

I'm sooooooo excited!!!
