Marathon Training Thread for 12/5-12/12

Karebear-- I hope your shins heal quickly. It really is a good idea to take Ibuprofen everyday if you can tolerate it. It will help with the inflammation and ease some of the pain. Good luck!

I am here -- just busy busy. still on track, got my walk in yesterday and today plan on yoga later in the day (or will switch out Saturday) and tomorrow is my 7 miler in prep for next week's bigg'in :)

I was able to walk for 45 minutes today and will do a little over 1 hour on Friday and Saturday then 6 miles on Sunday. I am trying hard to both train and eat right these last two wweks before xmas. I will take a 2 day vacation from the diet then it is back on until the 1/2 marathon. Hard to believe that 4 weeks from tomorrow I will be at the Contemporary, it has only been a dream of mine for 30 1/2 years!
Take care of those shins, Karen!
MelanieC, if you can, take the time and come walk with us. Dinner at Trails End on Saturday should be fun! Maybe you can take a personal day and not take vaction days.

Another rough workout for me :(

I did five miles in 60 min, so my time was really ok, - though not at fast as a few weeks ago. The problem is how bad I feel right now. I had take a nap this afternoon, and my legs feel like I just started running all achy and stiff. I have started to get really concerned about my long run on Sat.

Wow everyone is walking :cool1: So sorry Karen to hear about the shin splints, I sure hope they heal and soon!

Tinks - so funny about the "guy" in front of you, I hope it was a "nice" sight.

ONly walked 3 miles yesterday, i felt like I was lagging also. My body is feeling old, I'm hoping tomorrow I'll feel young again princess: Today it is raining so I just did alittle of this & that around the house and a bit of holiday shopping.

I need to get a new pair of sneaks also, I really like the saucony running shoes but if there are ones with more cushioning I think I would switch.

Keep up the training everyone, we'll be there soon enough :earseek:

Trimom: Your body may be ready for a rest...you might consider not doing as many miles next week or taking an extra rest day. Keep up the good work!

Okay--in about 15 minutes or so, I'm out the door for a 6 mile run...put on pj's yesterday at 3 and slept off an on until 8 when the oldest finally went to bed and went to bed for the night. Busy day today, so I couldn't run this morning--but hubby's back, so waiting until now means I get to go OUTSIDE to run...and I'm so pumped--just found out that we have tickets to the Inauguration, so I'm on high energy from the excitement. I requested tickets with all of our senators and representatives--and it is very ironic that I was succesful with a Democratic senator...but my theory that he might receive less requests probably ended up being true. Okay--that's my OT good news for today--sorry Karebear1! Now back to your regularly scheduled thread :)

My body is feeling old,
::yes::

That's it! My hip is still bothering me. Christmas concert last night, so the only walking that I did yesterday was at school during duty, and racing back and forth. I walked tonight, but my gait is more of a waddle due to the hip. :( I'm not sure whether I should break for 3 or 4 days, or keep trucking, loaded with ibuprofen.

STUPID PEDOMETER! It registered 2.09 miles in 50 minutes or so, and I know that I did at least 3. Maybe it doesn't register the first 15 minutes or so. :p I've had such bad luck with pedometers, I can't believe it! It doesn't matter that I know that I did at least 3, seeing 2.09 is sooo-o-oooo discouraging.

I feel like I'm swimming, all right....upstream all the way.

Not that I want my training "buds" to have sore bods and boo-boos but at least I know I am not alone!!!

Today I am thinking why in the heck do I have pain in both sides of my buns (way down deep in that bone) when yesterday was a rest day even!! I did do 50 min today and okay through the day, but my knee (the darn original trauma) and both "cheeks" tender!! I really think a bit of it was the weather (rainy here) and my friend "Arthur" in the knee. I have been thinking along the lines of what I read here tonight - I will walk when this is done but just a maintaining routine. My DH preparing for his 2nd marathon and I will not let his "massive" amount of miles influence me to do too much just so I don't feel like a schlep around him (my self inflictedness - not his on me)

Debbie - if the hip thing is the butt bone, I sit on a tennis ball - and baby does it "hurt" when you sit right on the sore spot. I think it acts like an accupuncture/pressure point type thing. Also, use some ice several times a day if you can.

I am also the internet "searcher" for remedies to my problems but I know that the massages I have been getting have really helped - so if that can fit in the budget I would suggest you think of that too, especially if you can find a sport minded person - they have empathy most of the time.

Don't over do is another - biggie - listen to your body

Gotta "run" well not literally - but take care of yourselves - we can do this!!!

Hugs, PD, positive thoughts and prayers for all of us !

MelanieC - I am so glad to hear from you - oHmom and I getting there Friday - it's a girl trip for us - Molli will have to let you know our itinerary!

I think we're all just a bunch of old women.........

Maybe we should just go back to knitting!

IF ONLY!!!!

Hi everyone! I was just thinking...in a month we all will be icing our feet and legs and resting from the days events. Hopefully I won't be too tired to enjoy my family :) I'm so excited. I've put myself on a very strict diet until a couple of days before the 9th, so that I can finish the race. Although its going to be hard I don't mind, we have something very exciting to look forward to in a month :)

Take a break--save the trucking for race day--if you keep trucking, you could make it worse and it could sideline you more.

I hate to be the bearer of good tidings--but my body is soo improved...I am having minor calf issues--but it always works it self out on the run...I am not having these aches and pains that everyone is describing. Our coaches have advised us to make this our fun part of training as we are just keeping our bods in shape to do the half or the full--we're no longer "getting in shape"--we are just maintaining our fitness levels...Saturday is our biggie run or walk of 20 or 10...then it is taper time. One of our coaches is a physical therapist so that helps alot with our injuries--when we have issues--we tell her what they are and she prescribes the fix..we have several people with IT band issues and pretty much half of the team has knee issues. When it hurts, you HAVE to back off...with my calf it is totally weird--as long as I go easy, it eases up...I don't know what is up with it--but it doesn't get worse. My coach gave me a particular exercise to do to strengthen it. But if the pain got worse with the workout--I would back off. Which is my suggestion for you ladies. IF you are hurting that much--you need to back it down--or you risk not being able to make it to the start line, let alone the finish line.

If you aren't experience regular aches and pains associated with running or walking (sorry, I don't know how to differentiate--other than if it makes you cry, limp, hobble--then it isn't regular)--it's time for a break. Race day when they have first aid booths and a van to pick you up should you be unable to finish--that would be the day to PUSH THROUGH THE PAIN!

Okay--mother hen is settling back down in her coop! You ladies take care of yourselves!

Well, my injuries are getting better, (had a fall, injured foot and ribs on both sides 3 1/2 weeks ago), but I'm still not up to any training. I can sometimes walk without limping, but when my foot pain starts and the limping starts, that makes my rib pain start again, too!

I'm hoping that in another week or so, maybe I can walk normally and TRY again. They're making fun of me at work. Last night I was coming out of an exam room (I work in a Dr.'s office) and ran right into the chart holder on the outside of the door with my nose!! Unfortunately, both the doctor and the patients in the room saw it!

If I'm extremely lucky (and careful!), maybe I'll make it a mile or two in the half-marathon! :earboy2:

HI all....been sitting around thining more about the big day and just wondering if any of youplan on sticking together during the marathon?
I am sure that once we're there, things may not be what we pictured them to be but any of you actually plan on staying together............

Just curious........and if anyone is interested, I average about 4.12 miles an hour....
I would love to walk/run with some one of course, doesnt mean we "have" to do the whole thing together but..well you know what I am trying to say.....
then again maybe you don't ( talking to self now (am I babbling again to perfect stranger) O yes, I think I am)

LOL.........ahhhhhhhh its late and I can't turn off the brain.

let me know if anyone is interested and if
you dont want to walk with me, Ill know its because you all think I talk to myself......... :teleport:

lol :earboy2:

Just kidding all

renee
back on track ( and a little wackier too)

:cool1:

good morning all :) my 7 miler has been delayed by two hours this morning due to a school fog delay. i still plan on it though -- i've been feeling my gluts lately and now i'm knowing why we taper. i'm ready to taper! actually the 7 milers seems not so far anyhow

i'm sorry i haven't been giving much input on the meet plans, etc. i'm really feeling the holiday crunch to get organized, wrapped, etc. seems like everyday i have something going on -- with of course my training schedule high on the priority list!

thanks for the tip on the fanny pack at circuit city - i plan on checking that out

Hi all,
So what is everyone paying to stay at the Caribbean Beach. I thought it was $107 a night. When I called yesterday it was $135 a night. ASMov is $77 a night but I would definately like to be near the fun.

I'm going to book my tickets and hotel this weekend when I have time to sit down and call. With work, homework and other things at night I'm not finding much time to get it done.

I worked out last night. It's the first time since June, so it's a start. I know I am way behind on my training so I expect to only get mostly running in.

Renee, I too think walking/running with some people may help with the motivation and boredom factor at least in the beginning. Sort of a "come on you can do it" kind of thing. I'd be willing to walk with you, not sure how sucessful I will be with running but I will probably add a burst of running here and there.

Good Friday morning everyone! This has not been a bad training week so far, but certainly far from great. I "power-shopped" on Monday and Tuesday nights, only stopping long enough to pay for something I needed. I did not "browse" -- I knew what I wanted and I was under time constraints. So, that's my "crosstraining" :flower1: I did 2.94 miles in 45 minutes on Wed night so I was good with that. Too much of "life" yet again this week - 'tis the season I guess - so Thurs/Fri are rest days, but tomorrow I'm doing at least 1 1/2 hours ... I'd actually like to do a lot more, but we'll see how the daily schedule looks :)

{{{HUGS}}} to all who are experiencing aches and pains. No snow or ice here yet so I'm pretty happy that I can still get outside for my walks.

Have a good one!

Mary-Liz

can you give my specific product name or number for the fanny pack you bought? do you like it? i'm having trouble with my brand-new extreme skip-protector CD player skipping during my walk and wondered if your belt pack might do the trick. anyhow -- there were three online and i wondered which one you bought? thanks! molli

Well I rested yesterday. Today I was to do a 30 minute run/walk . I was going to do the treadmill at school after work but there wer 100 kids doing Christmas crafts so that didn't happen. I came hom e an popped in Walk away the Pounds 3 mile. Nice to be done. Can you believe it, I can't think of one commitment I have this weekend(except 6 miles on a treadmill tomorrow am) !!Wahoo!! I nailed down my lodging today. We are staying at Fairfield Bonnet Creek Resort for a week. Will need to get a room for Sat. the 16th but alls good! Need to order my hoppers and a couple of vouchers and I'm done.

Sorry to hear that so many are nursing injuries. So far so good for me.

Things are falling into place. Hope we don't have any glitches. One has popped up, my son is a groomsman in his best friends wedding on Jan. 8th. I need to move his ticket to Sun. Not a difficult thing yet.
Have a fab. weekend and only 2 solid weeks of training and the rest is taper!!
