Marathon Training Thread for 11/28-12/5

Ok so I did it, I got back on the treadmill after about a 2 month rest!!!!!!!!thats right been a while
Instead of puching myself so hard however........My goal was to just do that mile in 16 minutes.
I was up to 5 miles in a hour but at this rate, I got 4.25 done and I wasnt really tired when I was done. I had to get off though...........family duties called.
anyway I have decided that one day SOON I will get on and actually see how far I can go!

Has anyone done this yet?

I had one other question ( this is my first ever marathon)
we all mention wearing a few layers of clothing right? Well arent we suppose to wear our number on the back of our shirt? SO if its pinned to the outer most layer does this mean as we shed we have to repin it?

Also, one more Q, for those of you who run/walk both the treadmill and outdoors, what are the differences (beside weather of course) I am only able to use the treadmill and can not get walks outside in my schedule, I am afraid that although, I may be able to finish a certain distance indoors, that outdoors will take a bigger toll on my body..

Just curious............
thanks all

Just BE CAREFUL--if you feel like you are going to fall or collapse--that would be too fast--but congratulations on the faster pace!!

Sorry, I should have clarified. I didn't have to hold on because I was going too fast, but because of some MS issues that have popped up. I am simply having difficulty walking straight. :confused3 Not a big deal when you have a nice walking path ;) but another issue when on the treadmill. :p Not to worry -- I have been to see my MS specialist and she has cleared me to continue to train. My gait is just 'off' a tad, and like I said, I veer to the left. I plan on having my sister walk on that side. She doesn't mind giving me the elbow to get back into my own space. :upsidedow

For me personally, I find walking outside MUCH easier to do. When doing one of my long walks, my pace is faster outdoors without feeling like I am exerting myself as much as on the treadmill.

Have you found a training schedule to follow? You don't want to do too much too soon and hurt yourself.

Check... http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/index.htm or http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_4/index.shtml for a training schedule that might help you. I am currently on Week 9 of my 14 week schedule. On the 12 week plans, you would be on week 7.

Meeting in the W's works for me....I was a Wilson before I married a Qualley. I should have stayed a Wilson -it's easier to spell and easier to read!

Lisa - send your race number, we will definately cheer you on! Nothing better than hearing your own name being yelled by strangers after 5 hours of running!

I forgot who posted about the massages, but I would be interested in hearing more when you get the information.

I got my first christmas present today! It arrived in the parcel post this afternoon from Australia. It's now sitting on the living room floor waiting for a tree to go under.

25 sleeps until Christmas morning! Which means about 40 sleeps until the 1/2 or full!

Molli, have you heard any other news about the park tickets? Jackie, did you purchase the convention tickets? That is one item I really want to cross off my list! We definitely want to visit the parks and that 2 or 3 day hopper would be the most we want to go. X that... the most our legs can afford for us to go. ;)
I will be addressing the ticket issue again this week. The number I have is for Disney Exhibitor Concierge 407-939-1717 open M-F 9a-5p. I think we all should call and harass them! I know before some human being told me we (marathoners) could get the 2 and 3 day hoppers.....I'm SURE I didn't dream it!

Finally got my airline reservations today. Got the flights I wanted and was able to apply the Sept credit to these tickets (from cancelled trip due to Frances) only had to pay an additional $26.

Now I have to select a Town Car service.....anyone have recommendations?
I also have to start a list of activities for M-W when my big sister comes to join me at Wilderness Lodge. Nice, sedate stuff, no wild rides. Figure we will HAVE to catch Off Kilter, British Invasion, Four for a Dollar, Beauty & The Beast, Festival of the Lion King, Illuminations. We'll be doing WISHES cruise Monday night (with some of you!). Hey.....where do we catch the boat???

OK, got to go pop in one of my exercise tapes.......catch you later and keep up the good work!

Thanks Gee......that is something to look forward to. I do hope the outdoors treat me better. I began a plan a few weeks back then dumped it, as well as everything else (eating plan) I have decided to just WING it. lol like alot of other things in my life. For example all of my college papers lol........ten pages due and I thought about them for 6 weeks but never actually got to them until the night before. :earseek:
Not that I don;t take this seriuosly but I always seem to amaze myself under pressure. Anyhow, as I mentioned, I didn;t do anything inparticular like I started out a while back, I was walking two minutes then running the rest. I stopped this because I had a feeling race day would come and I would just do what was comfortable. SO I decided to that now as well. When I was done (@4.25 I felt great, like I could do that 3 more times right then and there. I will try it to. As a matter of fact, tomorrow while baby is napping I may get 2 hours on the treadmill, I am going to see if I can double that. We'll say.
thanks for the suggestion and glad that hear that the pavement may be easier.

back on track :cool1:

Jackie- The WISHES cruise is scheduled for Monday evening- don'thave a time from them yet, although I should be able to get one soon. It leaves from the GF!

Renee, no need to do it all on the TM before our big day. You should be able to get in a longer walk or 2, but don't make the whole thing at this point. You could look up the schedule that was posted earlier up here and follow that. I think your idea of 2 hours if you can do that will work if you make sure to give yourself some off time after to recover.

W it is! Will look forward to meeting up with everyone. Is anyone going to go over to the Marathon after a bit to watch the others come in? I am maybe going to try.

Didn't do anything today. Recovery for me. We have a dinner obligation tomorrow. I may have to do that DREADED TM. Yuck. I hate that thing too.

I have been AWOL. My past two weeks have been beyond stressful and the last 3 days have been recovery. Not much exercise of any kind in there either.
Last night my DD had gymnastics from 6:30 to 9:00 so I went to my gym (that I pay for and haven't been using ( duh!) and used the curcuit and ellipticals for 120 minutes!! It felt so good to do that and to be done. I really miss working out and I forget how much. Tonight I walk/run. I'm back on track and reading Marathoning for mortals. I will be ready for the 1/2 even though I am terrified of it. My eating of course went out the window last week but I am back on track this week.
Hope everyone is is hanging in there and training well!!!

When I get time I wil read about the W stuff. Still looking for those dicounted hoppers. Wow they are expensive.

Thanks for all your support!!

I thought for those newbies to participating in events this tidbit of info might be helpful. The numbers need to go on the front in order that you can be photo-finished. Straight out of The Penguin book:

MARATHONING FOR MORTALS
A REGULAR PERSON’S GUIDE TO THE JOY OF RUNNING OR WALKING A HALF-MARATHON OR MARATHON

John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield

Chapter 14 Race Preparation
Those Last Dreadful Hours

Once you are back your hotel room, counting down the hours until race start, it’s time to think seriously about your race wardrobe. Since you’ve brought every piece of running apparel you own, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Even after 30-plus marathons, I still lay out, and put on, exactly what I think I’m going to wear on race morning. I’m not talking about looking into my luggage and making sure it’s all there. I’m talking about taking it all out, putting it all on, taking it all off again, and laying it out in reverse order—fireman style.

This is the point where I completely obsess about my number. I know just where I want it to be. I know that it has to be pinned on in just such a way that it hangs down over my waist. I don’t want it up too high or it will make my stomach look big. I don’t want it too low or it will make my legs look short. I’m not kidding!

If this is your first long-distance event, it’s worth whatever time it takes to get that number exactly where you want it. You know you’re going to want to buy the finish line photo and your are not going to want to look at a crooked number for the rest of your life.

Hope this helps. :D

 first off, must admit I have let my life get in the way of my trip planning! I emailed WWoS directly asking them what discounted park hoppers were available to marathon partcipants and got NO ANSWER! how tacky! Jackie, I just called that Disney Exhibitor Concierge number and asked same question, just matter of factly like i'm sure there are hoppers avaiable I just don't know who to call to get them. I had to leave my number and the gal who can help me will call back in an hour or so when she gets out of her meeting

for towncar -- i'm planning on becoming a dis supporter at a level to get a FL tour discount, anyone know what that discount it? we used them last dec and were happy with them. I"ll be arriving Friday just after noon and going to CBR if anyone wants to share a ride with mom and I. She'll be arriving 2 hours ahead of me and would love to meet someone for coffee i'm sure :smooth:

doesn't WDW know I don't need more stress

TAMMYNC!!! yea you are here!!!!

and to all those who are returning to our thread I say cyber high five to you! that's the hardest step, the first one, and coming back after a hiatus can be intimidating! you are ALWAYS welcome and i'm sooooo happy to see you :flower1:

today I got my warm buns out of my comfy bed, layered up and hit the pavement for a 50 min powerwalk with stride drills. let me tell you it was very very windy and spitting rain/snow :umbrella: that's me but i'm not so sure of the smile LOL anyhoo -- it's done and i'm glad, i was kinda a boost of my pride that i didn't let those nasty elements stop me i just DID IT! :hyper:

i must go and get things done around my house -- don't i always say that! :grouphug: :grouphug: :cheer2:

**11:30 got a call from a guy at Disney Exhibitor Conc -- he said he searched his database and found nothing avaiable for marathon participants to buy. I say "you know there is a group of us, we are all staying on property, all registered for the marathon and there is no discounted hoppers available? I don't know if you have ever been in a 1/2 or full marathon, but we just might not feel up to going to the parks the next day, and the package only offers a UPH, that isn't cost-effective for us" He said he'd call around and have someone call me if he found anyone that knew anything more. WAH!!! we are getting the roundaround!

To answer your first question--pin your number on your lowest layer that you plan to expose!!! And just flash when they need to see it. You need that number to go to the finish line--you should be fine on the track--I had the same question as well. This is what I was told by my team. You can see in some of the on-line pics that people don't have the numbers visible--that is because they will shed their long sleeve shirts. There have been incidents of people in races (not sure if Disney or not) being denied entry to the shoot b/c they accidentally tossed their number with their cold clothes.

As far as repinning--you may wish to practice during your walks if you desire to use this method of keeping up with your number. But be prepared for your fingers to not work the way you want them to ;)

I got some input on this as well...........not sure if it was you but somewhere along one of these treads there was a link to a ticket page for disney Wide world of sports.....I think it was you.anyway I got so excited and I too called and thought I would be able to get some discounted tickets.
and I was told no as well......they kept referring me back to getting a package (although i told them I already got a room @ group rates) and anyway those packages are the same packages offered to anyone.

Heres my dilemma..........
I bought 5 7 day hoppers with 4 options in June 03.......
used 2 days then, 2 in december and this past august, we used 2 days on all but one ticket, my hubby stayed home...... so his ticket was safe at home. Somewhere somehow I either lost or my tickets were stolen ( all but hubbys ticket) so now I am out of 4 tickets with one day remaining and four options. I was really looking forward to using this one day left not to mention the options. I called ticketing and they said that guest communications would be able to research it because I still had my husband ticket in pocession. they would be able to hault use on the ones lost and reissue me new ones...........

Heres the problem, I can't get in touch with them.
I have emailed them 5 times since september and someone gave me a FAX number for them I even faxed them a letter and still nothing!!!!!!!!!!! I have explained to everyone that these tickets are very cruical to my marathon trip. I only plan on going for the weekend and have no money to purchase regular priced tickets............
This lead me to these wide world of disney tickets that I saw with 2 and 3 day tickets and great prices............

But its a no go!!!!!!!!!! they are used for certain events at the wode world of sports and are very restricted........

This morning I got desparate and called the allstar movie and explained my dilemma........Like everyone else, she said there is no number for guest communications and guest relations at the parks won;t take any calls either..........

By the way, does anyone know if the marathon reggie includes park admission for that day? and if so, which park?that would be great I would just have to buy 3 day tickets being that we still have hubbys tic............on second thought, I wasnt planning on parking that day I am sure I will be tired.....

Oh mom. let me know what happens with these tickets I am interested in purchasing them if they allow us to.........

HELP!!!!!!!!! :charac2:

I got this off of an earlier thread on this board. It links you directly to the WDW meetings and conventions site. You can purchase the park hoppers at a discount on this site, and they do have the 2 & 3 day hoppers avail, as well as an after 2pm-1 or 2 day ticket option. :jumping4:

another person posted the following about using these tickets:

"the special tickets have to be purchased by someone regestered for the event/convention (you) but can be used by your guest (supposedly immediate family). The first use has to be during the event/time of your resort stay. That was the part I had to get cleared up because the 'event' is 1/6-1/10, but I didn't want to 'start' the ticket till 1/11. I'm OK because I've booked on Disney property for three more days. The ticket has a 10 day life span from date of first use."

http://disneymeetings.disney.go.com...athon&startDate=01/06/2005&endDate=01/10/2005

I have not purchased mine but am planning to purchase a hopper this way for my husband.

Hope this helps... :flower1:

HELP!!!!!!!!! :charac2:

Can't help you much on the tickets.

The marathon registration does not include walking back into the park post-race to enjoy the park :( Otherwise--they'd have to let 18,000 people back into the parks for free.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to let you all know I did 2 miles today. Should've done 5- and maybe I'll try to do 3 more later tonight. But for now I did 2.

Just want to make sure that everyone here has seen my post about no planned events for WISHWalkers at the marathon. I really want to apologize to everyone for all of this falling through. I should've picked up the ball a long time ago. I do truely apologize. Hopefully, we'll be able to plan something's on our own.

Ah, Karen! Don't take it to heart. We can make some mini-meets out of this....more parties! We may not be able to get all together in one spot at the same time, but we will get together! I'm expecting a hug from 20+ of my closest friends!

Good for you for getting out there and walking. It's mighty cold here today, and it's a "rest day" I have interviews tomorrow, but I've already approached a colleague about walking between them tomorrow night. :)

Remember: Just slow and steady wins the race. . . and the Donald medal!

ANY walking is better than NO walking, unless it's a rest day ;) I came home from work and did a 40 minute, still maintaining the 15 minute mile. I didn't feel like I was going all that fast, but it was really cold and windy, so maybe it made me go faster and I just didn't realize it. The next 2 days are probably going to be rest days for me because "life" is at it again.

Have a great night!

Mary-Liz
