Marathon Training for May 31st-June 6th

Hi everyone

No exercise for me today, I just couldn't get out of bed early enough before work. Tomorrow is my off day and I am planning on 5 miles again, hopefully the weather will cooperate for a change and I can get outside and get some hills worked in.

I did do good with my eating today though. I am so hungry right now though that I brushed my teeth and put in my retainer so that I can't eat anything else. I hope everyone else got off to a good start with their eating too!

Karen alot of times when I walk the day after doing a longer distance walk I am slower too. I think the muscles are still tired and trying to recooperate. You still got out there and walked and your time wasn't that much slower, Great Job :D Thanks for posting the link to that article, I read that a few months ago and it was very inspiring then and it was good to read it again.
I don't dread working out for that long I just wish there were more hours in the day so I could get out there every day. For me the key to not being bored with the long walks is having good music to listen to. Sometimes I'll put the TV on but I seem to be motivated to go faster with the music. I need to get some more variety though because as I am walking more I am listening to the same things over and over and that could get boring soon. I also think some of it is in the way you think about it. I have to tell myself that I will be walking/jogging for a long time but I am worth it and the health benefits of doing it. Good luck finding something to break the boredom!

Ashley YOU ARE DOING GREAT with your times, don't be so hard on yourself! I too sometimes get the crazy idea in my head that maybe the next year I'd do the full marathon to get that Mickey medal. I don't know what I'm thinking but this is the longest that I have consistently exercised and if I stick with it who knows what I might be able to accomplish. So if you're nuts, I am too and I'm older than you and thinking of doing a fulll marathon ;) I will get the magazine in the mail to you tomorrow and that will really motivate you too!

Cheryl

Karen, GREAT article. I agree that it is very motivating!! BTW, when I walk my "long" walk, I also am slower the following day. I generally take an off day after my long walk, and then do a couple fo shorter, (trying for FASTER) days after that.

Ashley, my little man is definitely drinking water. At one time it might have been a nice cold beer, or something else, but these days, definitely water. I think I'll make sure I get a Donald before I move on to wanting a Mickey!! But I could definitely see some of the same symbolism in my walk as in the walk of the lady who wrote the article.

Cheryl, Good for you on getting back on track with the eating!! I have my days where I brush my teeth to signal that I've had enough, so I totally konw what you mean!! I'm like you, I try to keep my off day flexible because there are some days that I just need off!!

Gonna run. My 4yo has library this AM and my 8yo has to go volunteer at the nursing home. I'm definitely the taxi driver today!

Good morning everyone!

Karen!!! Thanks for that link to the article! Amazing! Crying is not necessarily how I like to start out my day at work :D

Yesterday ended up being a rest day for me - hadn't planned on it being a rest day, but then again I forgot that it was Tuesday and I had my women's group from Church (so didn't get home until 10p). At that point I was not going to do any time on the TM. Am leaving work early today, and will jump on (or go outside maybe-depending on weather and cicadas) while I do laundry.

Beth - have to say I thought that the little guy was drinking Guinness Beer when I first saw him (but I also have Ireland on my brain as I'm planning my big trip for next year).

Ashley - no clue if I will ever go for a Mickey - I will have to see how my race for Donald goes....you never know  !

I'm soooo proud to be associated with a group like you - thank you so much for joining me on this trek!

Have a great day!

Sigh. I've been walking every day, and this weekend I made sure to do almost 5 miles at Liberty State park. I had walked the dog, walked to a friends house, and did some other stuff before I thought to hook on my stepometer. After I did, though, I hit over 10,700, so that's happy.

I wasn't going for time at all because most of it was done pushing a stroller. Also, I'm still having trouble with the right knee. A friend with some expertise in this area said that I am compensating for the extreme weight loss, and I am still walking like I'm over 300 lbs., so I am putting pressure on the knee. I also walk on the oustide of my foot, which doesn't help.

LOL Monica! I never thought about people being at work when they read this article! Next time I'll put a warning on it! :teeth: Hope no one saw you!

Did you all see her bling in the end picture?!?!?! We're gonna own that in about 7 months!

Baileymouse- was that a sigh of satisfaction, or a sigh of discontent? I'm sorry to hear about your knee still hurting. If you are over compaensating and your foot is truning out, the right pair of shoes should help a bit. I know once I got the right shoes my hip problem has practically disappeared. Maybe you could try going to a shoe store that fits shoes to runners ad they can fit you with the right pair. When you're walking the distances we're gonna be walking - you really do need to be sure you have the right shoes. I'm proud of you for walking so much last week. Thta's quite an accomplishment! Keep up the good work!

Beth and Cheryl- it's good to know that my body is normal when it comes to the day after long walks! At least it's normal in something. I have had another week of dieting and not losing. And I am thinking about quitting going to the dietician. I thought maybe going to her we could figure out why I'm not losing and that she would be able to give me definite ways to get past these frustrations- but it's been a while and there's been virtually no loss. Last week I thought I lost 5 lbs- but regained it from Weds- Sat and then it came off again from Sun-now, but who knows if it will stay off? I'm doing all I'm supposed to be doing, but it doesn't seem to work- oh well! All I can do is keep trying- So the question is.... Do I kep trying to the tune of $30.00/week for the dietician or do I just keep trying on my own?

No walking yet for me today- I'll do my 2 miles when I get home from the dietician's and let ya all know what she has to say as well.

I just woke up, but I wanted to post. This may help some of you, but maybe not? When I started this, I was thinking that walking/running every day was the key to getting myself from here to there. When I read it, though, it pointed out a few things for me.

The schedule that I am on (from the book) has me walking/running only three times per week. Two days a week it has cross training. This is because while we need to train our specific marathon muscles, there are other muscles out there, too, that really need to be strong for us. When I did track, you have no idea how much it helped me to have strong arm muscles. I am planning to use these "extra" days that I am not running to build back some arm muscle and to do something different, such as rollerblade. Rollerblading is also working legs, but it incorporates different parts of your legs. Does htis make any sense?

Then we are supposed to rest two days during our week, also, according to Bingham and Hadfield. The rest days are important for our muscle regrowth, and will keep us out of pain. When we do our strenuous longer runs, we are causing some damage to our muscles, and by eating right and resting, we are allowing them to grow stronger. (This is also why we are supposed to stay out of the hot tub after running the marathon  )

Anyway, I don't want to sound "preachy," but since I have started following his plan, I notice almost no pain from day to day, and my runs all feel fresh and healthy. I know I have mentioned the book before, but it has come in handy to have knowledge of some of this stuff as I'm trying to do this. There's a lot of stuff in there about the right shoes, form, clothes, socks, etc. I think anybody could benefit from reading it!

Alright, I'll step down. I just wanted to share information. (I HATE Feeling like I'm telling people what to do. I am not doing that! I am just trying to help. )

Now I'm off to eat a good breakfast and do some working out. And yes, I definitely canNOT wait to own my Donald Medal. I figure two months is about the appropriate amount of time to brag about THAT baby! Wear it every day. I wonder how it will go with my clothes?

Have an awesome day! The sun is shining here, and I LOVE it!
Ashley:wave2:

Just checking in to let ya all know I did my 2 miles (in 40:36) even though half way through I really wanted to stop and sit down and do nothing! I was watching Montel- Sylvia Brown was on- and i just kept telling myself.... "just walk through the next commercial" then when the commercial was over I'd tell myself..."Just walk through this part of the show and then stop" and I kept doing that until I was finished. It was hard walking today, but I am glad that I did it and that I don't have to make it up tomorrow.

What do you guys think? Is it gonna get more difficult for us as the summer goes on and the kids are home etc.?

Way to keep yourself walking! Sometimes we need to find landmarks in our workouts, in order to keep ourselves going. I'm proud of you for doing it at all! When I'm watching TV, that's all I'm doing. I don't even turn it on anymore. WISH seems to be a much better outlet for my time!

Thanks to all who make this place such an awesome place to be!

Ashley :wave2:

P.S. We should get a message from KrisNoth soon! She sent me a P.M. that she was trying to find us! OVER HERE, KRISNOTH!

I have to make it quick but I want you to know that I am committed (day 2 went well) it's after 7:00 so no more eating for me today.

I only got a Curve session in - woke up with sinus headache and achy knees - but all better tonight and going to get up in morning and do something - not sure just what yet.

Ashley - would love the program I will send my info ASAP - (must make some phone calls tonight and will be back when I can to get my name and info on your list)

Keep it up everyone - one day at a time ::yes::

Well I got in my 5 miles again today. It was another yucky morning so I was on the treadmill again. At least the sun came out this afternoon! I didn't feel like alternating in the jogging with the walking today but I made myself do it so I did it in 75 min. again. Now I am glad I did! My legs aren't as tired afterwards today as they were the other 2 times I did the 5 miles so I guess they are starting to get used to this so that's progress for me.

Baileymouse Great job with the walking every day! I hope you can figure out a good technique so that you don't keep straining your knee! I hope it gets to feeling better quickly!

karebear Great job pushing yourself to get in your 2 miles! You did it and now it's done! I hope it keeps getting easier for you to keep going for these longer walks! How did it go at the dieticians? It sure is frustrating when you're exercising and watching what you eat and the weight still doesn't want to come off and stay off. Are your clothes fitting better. Maybe you are just turning fat into muscle and that's why your not seeing much of a weight loss. Maybe your muscles are still getting used to the extra exercise and your holding onto some water weight because of that too. Just remember you are doing things that are more healthy for yourself and give it time.

Ashley I got the magazine in the mail today. At the post office they said you should have it in 2-3 days so watch your mail!

AlreadyexcitedGrammy Good job recommitting and making it through day 2. So far so good for me too today. Glad you're feeling better tonight and that's great that you went to Curves even when you weren't feeling good.

Tomorrow is my crazy long day at work and I won't be able to get online at all so have a good Thursday everyone and keep up the great work. Thanks everyone for all the inspiration you give!

Cheryl

Hello everyone!

I lost you for awhile - but luckily Ahley has gotten me back on track. I am trying and trying to get my husband to join too. He is not a fanatic like me - but I thinks he enjoys the fact that I am asking him to help me train. He even said yesterday that if we keep it up - maybe he will join up too.
Almost almost
I am going to Disney in 24 days - I am thinking this will get him motivated.

I am so impressed with everyone's posts. I have to tell you that you all keep me motivated and me with my Daily Disney fix.

Ashley I'll send along my info!:sunny:

:wave2: Whew! What a week! The end of the school/lessons/concerts year is always a whirlwind. . .and we're just halfway done! :earseek:

I saw the physical therapist about my knee on Tuesday. Apparently it is not centred (more < shaped, instead of [ ), maybe because that foot is flat. So-o-o-o she taped my foot, told me not to work out at Curves (bottom half- I can still strengthen my top) and some limited walking is okay. No jogging until we start to strengthen the knee. So, it's a day by day thing right now. I go back again next week, and maybe it will be an orthotic in the right shoe that will be the end result. :confused3: We'll see.

Baileymouse, interesting that your friend talked about still walking as though you still weighed much heavier. Good for you for hitting over 10 000!

Ashley, I got the plan! Thanks so much. I love your lime green postcard. I'll keep walking and as soon as I get the go ahead to start jogging, I'll be using it.

Beth, I agree cooking for a large number can be tiresome, especially when one (or more) are the meat and potatoes kind of guys and of course, "Dessert? What's for dessert, Mom?" Funny, fruit just doesn't cut it for them. lol

Cheryl, Monica and Karen, you are doing great with your resolve! Weigh to go! ;)

Good morning!!

I ended up only doing 1 mile on the TM last night - storm was rolling in, so I pushed it to finish the 1 mile. Will try to get in atleast 2 miles tonight.

Have a great day!

I ran 1 mile and walked another 1.5 on the treadmill last night for a total of 2.5. I really tried to pay attention to my breathing. I am going to have to do some research on breathing.

Can you believe the marathon is only 7 months away! Time to really work on increasing my distance. I am going to try a long walk on Sunday.

Everyone is doing such a great job!

Did my mile today. I think my DD Alisssa is going to join us with the half marathon! I'm so excited. She is the world's sweetest girl. It will interfere with a few days of college- but what the heck! She's got a 3.6 average at BYU and she really wants to join us so I say let's go for it! You all will love her. She's a great kid.

If anyone is interested, there's a post on the DVC Board about DVC owners that are running/walking the marathon or half marathon. It's worth a little peek if you have the time. There are a few hints and stories there that might interest and inspire you.

Monica- 1 mile is good! Soemthing is better then nothing- don't ever forget that!

Mel- I'll try to look up some info on breathing as well- I do think it's interesting that a couple people are having a problem with that. If I find anything good- I'll let ya know.

Debbie- I am so glad you went to a PT and found out what the problem was. Good luck getting it corrected. Did you ask her if it is still possible to do the half?

Kris- WELCOME BACK!! It's NOT FAIR that you get to go to WDW in 24 days! I want to come too!!! I think this trip will be very inspirational to your DH in joining us. As you walk under the castle in MK just whisper in his ear that the next time he comes through here, the roar of the crowd will be all that he hears!

Cheryl- another 5 down. And you did it even when the weather was lousy! YEAH GIRL!!! I learn from people like you that if I push myself just a little further, I see improvement. The dietician- well....... let's just say I didn't go yesterday. I had an I don't care day! And now I'm back on track.

Grammy- I'm so glad you posted yesterday. I almost started another post wondering why we hadn't heard from you! I was worried you were gone!!! Happy to hear day 2 went well. As you can tell- I blew it, but I'm ok now and starting again.

I don't want to sound weird or anything like that.... but I sure love you guys! You make me feel so good about what I am doing. Thanks for your support!

Hey everyone! I took a break yesterday - but I am out walking/running again tonight.

Monica - Did you get your two miles in?

Debbie- Talk about motivation! You still are going to work the top of the body - even though your hurt! That is impressive!:Pinkbounc

Karebear - great idea about the castle to my hubby. I can't call him a DH yet because he is only 1/2 convinced.

Quick question: How many of you have pedometers? Also - do you think the 1/2 marathon could be walked and jogged? Or do you think you are better off doing only one?

Well off to run.

Hey Everyone!

I'm late getting here today but we had a lot of school projects to take care of today!!

I did get in my 57 min walk this morning. I started out later than usual and it's just getting so darned hot so fast now. I need to get back to my 5AM early time so I'm a little more comfy. Good for all of you with your training!! Looks like everyone is certainly on track for the big event!

Krista, I think you can do whatever is comfortable to you, but you want to be sure you cross that line in less than 3 1/2 hours. So, if you can jog some, that will just help you with the time. I plan to be a total walker, so I'll be brining up the rear of the pack!!lol 24 days until Disney!! I'm counting down to Nov and I can't imagine being at 27 days out right now!

Karen, nice that your DD will join you with the 1/2 marathon!! I love the multi-generational thing. I'm sure she's just as sweet as her mom and I look forward to meeting her! Thanks and I'll check on the DVC board. BTW, I love Sylvia Brown. I find her quite interesting and think she would enjoy a trip to my house.
::yes:: As far as summer, we are homeschoolers, so I've always had my kids 24/7. Summer will not be different, but we are schooling this summer and taking off Nov/Dec/Jan this winter, so that is a bit different, but so far, so good!! Also, the thing with the dietician has to be frustrating. There are several food tracking sites online...have you tried any of those?

Melanie, I'm like you...amazed as we get closer to time. Seems like it was just yesterday that I was online signing up for the event.

Monica, we've had horrid weather here, too. Good luck with the TM tonight!

DEbbie, I'm sending you get well pixie dust for that knee. I sure hope that it can be fixed with an orthotic!! And it sounds like you know my house...definitely the meat and potatoes kind. Actually, meat and potatoes AND rice AND bread. But we have made great strides and I LOVE those small brownies...the kids bake one to have for dessert and there are no leftovers!

:wizard: ::yes::

Cheryl, 5 miles is awesome! Way to go!!

Grammy-good for you on the curves. I enjoyed that when I lived in town.

Ashley, try getting rid of your cable or dish. We did that in Apr 2002 and haven't missed it...well, or at least not much!! The kids go to my moms about once a month for a few hours of Disney channel, but we get PBS and one local channel (ABC) with our rabbit ears and we rent movies. We truly haven't missed it an my kids aren't TV junkies anymore. They spend lots of time playing outside now! I will probably take a real rest day tomorrow. I was reminded by one of your posts!

Baileymouse, good for you on all those steps! Pshing a stroller that distance isn't easy!! IT certainly works those stomach muscles!::yes::

Ok...have a great day everyone!! I'll check back in tomorrow!!
~~Beth

Good morning!!! HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

I was able to get my 2 miles in last night on the TM.

It's funny reading about you guys not watching TV while on the machine - I don't know if I'd be able to walk on the TM with out that distraction. I watch anything - I can't read on the TM, and I've gotten bored just staring into space (with music), so watching TV is good for me.

Beth - where in FL do you live again? I think I remember you telling me, but I'm a numbscull so have forgotten. I will now be in Orlando starting on the 3rd of Sept (6 nights before my friend joins me) house hunting, and talking to my old boss, and not much else (may do Discovery Cove). Want to get together for a little "training", or just a meal?

I can't believe that as of today it is 7 months and 5 days until the marathon.....wow!!! I remember when I had 13 months to train!! I won't start to panic yet...but just wait and see.

Krista--I usually use a pedometer (haven't the last few days as it's driving me crazy with that thing on my hip), and I was trying to do atleast 10,000 steps per day. I did get up to over 20,000 1 day which shocked me! I still would like to say that I will only be walking this marathon, but I do reserve the right to change my mind and jog alittle --- MUST do what ever it takes not to be swept!!

For all of you that are having family members do the marathon with you --- that is soooo cool!! I know I will be there with a good friend of mine (and she's the best), but it adds another dimension to this to have family there.

I keep thinking that I will need windshield wipers to wear that day, cuz I know I'm going to be so emotional and crying all the time!! I get choked up now when I tell people what I'm doing, and about the group of people I will be doing this with!

Also - welcome rkandmjsmommy (Denise) to our little group - she posted a thread asking ?s about the marathon, so I told her to head on over to see us!

Ok---I'll sign off for now. Have a great Friday!!
TTFN

Welcome, Denise!! I love when new people find our thread. Our team roster is getting longer and longer!!

I just realized when I worked out yesterday that I did my mileage in 50 minutes on Monday. Now I feel a little better! I am always so competitive with myself...

Yesterday I did nearly five miles (based on best guess, since the mile markers are only marked sporadically throughout the path) in 50 minutes. It felt great! I didn't want to stop!! I didn't get to do my stride drills because I was running late for a haircut. I will do those after my five mile run on Saturday.

Monica- My problem with watching TV is that if I have something to focus on, I slow down immensely! I run outside, so I always focus on little things, like...RUN TO THAT TREE! OKAY, NOW TO THAT HOUSE! WOW! GO GET THAT CUTE MAN OVER THERE! Oops...I've gone a little overboard. Perhaps that man was DBF, though? We'll let him believe that. :p

I, too, think I will need windshield wipers. This thing has gotten me SO emotional! I think it is good for me to have soemthing so positive to focus on, though. Last night one of my friends called to let me know that they were all goign to the bar, and I made the decision NOT to because I had already eaten things I shouldn't have, and didn't want to go TOO overboard on (empty) calories! I felt a little antisocial, but this morning I feel really good!

Beth- Good job getting that walk in, despite heat and school projects! 57 minutes is a nice chunk of time to set aside for yourself! :)

Krista- My plan for the marathon is to run 9 minutes, walk 1. This is if everything goes as planned. The plan that I'm on shows run 3 minutes, walk 1, but I had to make up the rest of the time until the marathon, so this is what I came up with. (I have a calendar that I made that has each day's plan written in all the way until January. I am telling you, I LOVE markers!)

Karen- You should get your daughter on here, too! Where is BYU? Until this year, a few days of college never meant a THING! She deserves teh little vacation, and the profs. might even understand!

Debbie- I hope you are feeling better soon! Just make sure you listen to the doctor and don't give yourSELF the go-ahead. Sometimes it is so hard to be patient! Keep doing upper body and you'll be totally fine!

Melanie- What breathing questions do you have? I can try and help a little. Otherwise, for those of you having some troubles, have you ever tried those BreatheRight Strips? Maybe that would help open up the airways and take the strain off your body.

Cheryl- Good job pushing yourself the litlte bit furhter! I am watching my mail, I am watching my mail!!! I LOVE MAIL!

AEG- Way to recommit yourself! Which program would you like?

Everybody else-- Keep up the good work! WAHOO for all of us!!!

A little sidenote: I am going swimsuit  shopping today! Kohl's has their swimsuits 40% off and at the register you get to pick a fortune cookie for an extra discount! 15, 20 or 25% Kind of excited, kind of nervous! Here goes nothin! I'll report when I get home.

Like Karen, I too love you guys! This is such a big part of my life right now, and I love having others to share it with. I can't wait to meet you all!
