Mandatory daily room inspections?

After an experience my DH and I had in Australia years ago, I have absolutely no problem with this policy.

We were in Australia for business and stayed at a hotel for two weeks. We were the only two people from our company on our floor and were coming and going at the same time every morning and evening. As the week went on we noticed that there was a smell that became progressively worse each evening when we got off the elevator. This hotel was right along the water so we initially wrote it off as a funky smell coming from the ocean. We did think it was odd that none of our co-workers on any other floors noticed the smell. One night the smell literally almost made me gag when the elevator door opened. As we headed down the hall, there was a room with the door opened and multiple industrial grade fans blowing - the smell was clearly coming from that room. We found out the next morning that some guy had died in his room but had the Do Not Disturb sign on his door. He had been in there for days. It wasn't until people started complaining about the smell on the floor that they finally decided to enter his room.

Thanks so much for posting this article. In light of these reasonable statements by Disney, and in the absence of any credible reports to the contrary, I believe the new policy will have little or no impact on guests who receive daily housekeeping and spend a good amount of time outside their rooms (which I assume is the vast majority).

I have to say a few words in defense of housekeeping. We have been visiting Disney for 33 years (somewhere between 40 and 50 visits - we lost count lol). When the kids were small enough to nap, we would call housekeeping on our first day and request a certain time frame (usually between 8 and 2) - that's when they came. Just this last visit, we had an earlier than usual dinner and went back to the room around 3:30 to get ready. The housekeeper was working on a nearby room and stopped us to say more people than usual were checking out and she hadn't gotten to our room yet. She apologized more than once, which we didn't feel was necessary. When we told her we needed to shower and get ready for dinner, she asked if she should put us on the list for "the after 5 o'clock crew." We agreed, and when we returned to the room later that evening, the room was done.

I certainly do not doubt that many, many people have nightmare stories about housekeeping. Hopefully, they will not post them here lol - I think this is the only thread where people are not freaking out about the so-called mandatory daily security checks by trained personnel. We are all shaped somewhat by our individual experiences, which goes a long way toward explaining why people disagree about the new policy. I don't believe there is any real need for concern, but those with different experiences and outlooks will almost certainly disagree.

So Disney checks your room
Every single day. They have been hounding us saying we MUST come in and do a visual inspection. This is a total invasion of our privacy. It’s a lawyer thing so god forbid something happens here Disney can say well we checked every room daily so you can’t sue us. They say they want to empty your trash Really? You never worried about our trash the last 14 years of being DVC members. People please complain to Disney to change this intrusive ridiculous feel good poilicy. It’s a slippery slope when you don’t speak up and let corporations reduce your privacy! As Benjamin Franklin said “those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither Liberty nor safety.”

And yet there are at least two websites and a dozen or more disboard posts saying just this, that Disney is making daily room inspections mandatory.

Personally, I expect mousekeeping to be in there every day so it's a non issue for me but this is a policy that is generating a lot of heated complaints and I'm just curious if it even exists.
Yes they are doing mandatory daily invasions of your privacy!!! It’s ridiculous and everyone should complain. It’s not okay and really people housekeeping coming in isn’t going to prevent a Las Vegas type of incident. This is a lawyer thing by Disney and it’s been a tremendous disruption to our “magical” stay here in May. My advice, DONT GO TO DISNEY!!!

If you don't opt out of housekeeping, then no one else is going to come into your room, knock on your door, etc. So, OP, unless you opt out of housekeeping for your WDW stay, this is a nonissue. Completely. We are here right now and have been for a week. We had housekeeping every day, and the housekeeping came when we were out of the room at the parks. You have nothing to worry about.

Unless housekeeping knocks on your door before you leave for the day. Or if you are back in your room for a mid-day break. Or you aren't spending all day at a park.

Then housekeeping will bother you, and it is an issue. It is an issue because they will knock until you answer. And if you tell them to come back later, someone else will knock on your door within 30 minutes, and they will demand entry.

Our knock came before 9am. And since we aren't rope drop people, they tended to knock when we weren't dressed. So, yes, it was an issue.

Yes. I agree. For people who are gone from early morning til late at night, whether or not they've opted out of housekeeping, it's a non issue.

It can be/will be an issue if people want housekeeping but sleep late, have resort days or come back mid day for naps if housekeeping hasn't come in yet since the do not disturb signs are gone.

DVC rooms don’t have a housekeeping option anyways, they will come in for trash removal daily to do their “check”, but it isn’t housekeeping. So no way to opt out or in for housekeeping when staying DVC!

In what way has this been a disruption? I am asking because I sincerely want to know.

If you are still there, and have specific reasons why the inspections were disrupting your trip, I would suggest that you share your concerns personally with the manager of your resort. If you simply do not like the intrusion, then I agree, staying elsewhere would be the best solution.

Not so mandatory. I was there in March for 8 days 4 of those days I didn't even get housekeeping and I hadn't opted out. If you're so unhappy with Disney you don't have to go. I'll continue to go and figure this is a non issue.

This is exactly what happened to my parents at the BC last week, but at 2 PM during their afternoon naps. My sister was traveling with them and had her cell number on the reservation and they even called her cell phone.

On the other hand, we were at the YC CL for 5 days and left our room occupied sign on the whole time and never got a knock.

Unless you stayed in the room all day, you have no idea whether someone did a room check.

Glad it wasn't an issue for you.

It doesn't bother me. I agree it is an annoyance, but it is only a "tremendous disruption" if you tell them to come back later. I'm more the sort to let them in, and get it over with. They WILL do a room check.

Well, on two different days, I was standing there in a towel or at least not dressed.

I should be allowed at least a little privacy.

Definitely. They are supposed to knock, but if you don't answer they will come in. Best to make sure the door latch is always on when you are in the room. That way they can't catch you in only a towel.

Oh, the latch was on. It is always on, if we are in the room.

But sorry, but it is a pretty big disruption when someone knocks on your door before you are dressed for the day and the only way to get rid of them is to close the door in their face (which is what we did) or let them in. And of course if you close the door on their face or otherwise not allow them to come in "right this second," they will send out the big guns. Thankfully, we were already out of the room by the time the big guns came by.
