After a night of drinking, a Violet man was arrested on charges of pummeling his pit bull with a baseball bat and plunging a sword through its neck because the dog messed in his bedroom,*authorities said today.

Despite being hit four times and stabbed with the four-foot sword, the dog survived, said Chief Deputy James Pohlmann of the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office. It was treated at a local animal clinic.
Its owner, Ralph J. Topey III, 29, of 2325 General Pershing St. is being held at the parish jail in lieu of $65,000 bond.
The incident happened Tuesday night after Topey, who had been at a bar drinking, returned to the home he shares with several relatives, Pohlmann said. A relative said Topey walked from his room in an angry manner and told her the dog had made a mess in his bedroom, the Sheriff's Office said. She saw a trail of blood in the residence and found the dog in the bathroom, covered in blood, Pohlmann said.
The woman called another relative, who took the dog to a West Bank emergency clinic. The dog suffered facial fractures as the wound to the neck and throat and is now with the relative who took it in for treatment.
Sheriff's deputies were called to the residence Wednesday and interviewed Topey, who acknowledged beating and stabbing the animal. He said he hid the bat and sword but told deputies their location, and both were recovered.
They booked him with aggravated cruelty to an animal, a felony.

I've got a bat just begging to meet him, face to face as it were.

Poor dog! I don't know what is wrong with people. Just yesterday my father-in-law found a dog that had been shot in the head. Thankfully he got the dog vet care and he's going to be fine.

Today when I got home from work I saw a boy kicking one of my dogs. UGH!

I hope he is put in the general population and a lifer gets to him. What a weak pathetic, coward a disgusting piece of trash.

I hope that dog gets a chance to be adopted and given the life he deserves to have.

I would have taught that boy a lesson one he would not soon forget.

Oh if he would have done that in front if me...
What a terrible thing that poor dog had to go thru. I hope he gets a long time in jail and a very big fine.

They better throw that man in prison. He needs to have a long time to think about his actions.

If I had thought the boy was old enough that I wouldn't have gotten in trouble he would have gotten his butt kicked!

The dog that was shot is doing well. Luckily the bullet didn't penetrate the skull, it just followed along it and exited behind his ear. Today he helped my hubby eat his grilled chicken. He seems to be doing well.

People like that make me sick. I could never imagine harming a innocent animal like that. We should really change the law so that his punishment matches what he did that poor dog. Glad he's okay!
