Man killed at Cedar Point

A 45 year old school teacher whose precious cell phone was more important to him than whatever family he may have.

I'm pretty sure that incident was at Six Flags Over Georgia. The girl's legs hit the dude, but that's not what killed him. The thick iron bar under and behind the seats struck and decapitated him. But whatever, this is the 4th or 5th similar incident in the past 5 or 6 years. It's happened in European parks as well.

Yes, Cedar Point sells alcohol. No one yet knows if it was a factor.

A lawsuit being filed? I can almost guarantee it. It really has no merit, but Cedar Point will pay out a small amount to get rid of the nuisance claim.

Perhaps Cedar Point and these riders should file a preemptive lawsuit against this Darwin winner's estate.
You're right. I had managed to combine 3 different incidents into one. The girl actually lost her foot due to an accident on Superman after the kid was hit by Batman. The Carrowinds incident involved a person getting shot by someone shooting a rifle in the area around the park.

My guess would be victim gets off ride. Hey family I dropped my phone but I know excatly where I dropped it. His family okay lets get a ride worker to get it. Victim no I can get it just take a second.

That is exactly what happened at Carrowinds years back when the kid was killed going after his hat he lost on the coaster. The girl who ended up hitting him had to have multiple surgeries as her lower legs were pretty much shattered by the impact.

I think the hat story was later reported as incorrect. He was part of a church group, he snuck out of the park to smoke (I think) and was re-entering the park. I also heard that he and his friends were trying to grab peoples dangling legs.

does CP not have drop boxes at the beginning of the ride for cell phones and such? At all the big rides at Hershey and even knoebles they have boxes for each rollercoaster that to hold stuff like this.

We were there yesterday. We left early though because it was an incredibly busy day since the LeBron James foundation was there with tons of guests, it was like a Saturday afternoon instead of a Thursday morning. Glad we left before this tragedy.

It really upsets me that this happened. He didn't just jump a fence, he went into an employee area and then scaled a fence. The thing is all you have to do is tell them you lost your phone and they will retrieve it, there is no reason at all to go try and get it. My heart goes out to all the people who saw this, like I said it was full yesterday with lots and lots of kids.

They do on certain rides, it really depends on the ride. They also have lockers everywhere but many people are too cheap to pay for them. We limit what we bring into the parks and I am not a coaster rider so I always hold everything. If my kids go alone I give them money for lockers for this very reason.

Oh wow.. at every rollercoaster at Hershey they have shelves and boxes for you to store things in. I was there a month ago and I couldn't imagine not having those boxes to use on those rides. We had a locker when we were in the water park area but only used it for 3 hours or so.

There's a couple rides at Cedar Point that aren't set up to handle drop boxes. In a couple cases, it's just the set up of the loading and unloading areas, like Millennium Force, where you load and unload on different platforms.

Other rides could accommodate boxes, but they've removed them, either for space saving (like the "new" ride, Rougarou) or, IMO, to try to generate more revenue from locker sales.

That being said, AFAIK, Raptor is a coaster that has boxes on them. Not to mention, I've ridden it dozens of times in the past few years with my cell phone in my pocket and have never lost it. Either this guy didn't have it very well secured or he had it out while riding Raptor. I've seen that too many times - people who pull their phones out right after the ride leaves the platform. If an employee working the ride saw the phone out, they wouldn't have let the ride leave the platform. They would have insisted he either put it away, place it in the boxes or give it to a non-rider. They're pretty strict about that stuff at CP.

Part of the reason is on some rides you get off at a different place than where you get on so it just wouldn't work. You know which rides don't have cubbies because they tell you before hand that no loose items are allowed and all of those rides have lockers right next to them.

At US last week, the staff at Rip Ride Rocket were using metal detectors to check guests for phones; if you have one on you they will send you back to put it away in a courtesy locker. I didn't ride it, but DH said that the signage indicated that it was being done to prevent photos being taken. Seems to me that preventing incidents like this may be another reason as well.

My guess is that someone that age who went after a phone that way was probably using it to keep in touch with other members of his party, and he was panicked because he was sure that he would not be able to find them without it. In many situations the phone itself isn't the issue; the communication channel is. I let my older kids go off on their own in parks -- IF they have phones on them and can stay in contact if we need to find one another. (I also have a rule that if you are doing that, you need a pocket that closes securely with velcro, a zipper or multiple snaps. I've even added zippered interior phone pockets to the quick-dry clothing that my family wears when at theme parks.)

Locally, a man was killed when he dove under a ride at a local festival right before the 4th of July. He was inpatient at a nearby mental facility. Somehow he was able to escape and jump over a fence before anyone from the hospital was able to catch him. The news has been quiet about this detail.

We were there two weeks ago and saw the Gatekeeper stop half way up the hill because someone pulled their phone out. The staff had to run up and have a word with him. My girls were on it at the time. I wish people weren't so stupid.

Happens ALL the time, so annoying! I personally think they should be ejected from the park with no refund.

:scared:Can you imagine if a guest on the ground was hit by a falling cell phone?

It could easily happen with the gatekeeper.

.

At first, I was confused by the story. I thought they got the name of the coaster wrong, or were calling it by its old name. I thought I read Rougarou had replaced Raptor, but it seems it replaced the stand-up coaster Mantis. Same track, from what I understand, just different sit down trains.

Have to get back to Cedar Point soon to ride Millenium Force again....and also the Derby Racers "carousel."
