I was gone all day, drove home about 7 PM. It was pitch dark out, cold (going to snow soon) The house was all dark, too. I used the garage door opener and drove in and parked. As I was exiting the car, a man was RIGHT THERE, behind me! This is a residential neighborhood, only houses are on the street and on all the streets surrounding this area.

He asked me where I'd been and said he knew I'd been gone all day. CREEPY!

I was dumbfounded. I also knew my husband was right behind me, (having caught the light red turning into our development)

He asked me questions about what was in the house !!??!! Wanted to have a conversation and sell me something... I raised my voice and told him to LEAVE NOW! He laughed at me... I had my cell phone in my hand and called 911 as soon as that happened.

He kept standing there asking why was I upset and why was I yelling at him.

Right. Soon I was screaming for help, screaming "GET AWAY FROM ME", he kept standing there.

Finally he sloooowly walked away. 911 was listening as this went on.

My husband then pulled up and found me shaking, talking to the 911 operator. The creep was 2 driveways away.

The police caught him 6 driveways down. Evidently his 'excuse' is he works for the local cable company and wanted us (me) to change something or other. Right. In the pitch dark. Outside on a cold night. He finds a willing customer by following her car into a residential garage. And what's with him knowing I was gone "all day"?

SOOooo I discovered my screaming alerted ZERO neighbors. Nobody was outside on a cold November night, all windows were closed.

What do you do/use to feel safe? What do your daughters do/use? My dd told me she carries a "rape alarm" on her key ring, it shreeeeks when pulled on.... but, frankly, its more annoying than loud....

Is there a product out there that will scream even louder? Attract more attention? Perhaps something to keep on my car key ring? I have a very old unused can of pepper spray, but it is in my linen closet, did me no good sitting there last night. I WOULD have used it if I'd had it with me.

:scared1::scared1::scared1: No advice, but I am SO glad that you are safe!!! Just goes to show that my mother was right; you ALWAYS have to have your wits about you and be aware of your surroundings 100% of the time...

What a frightening story!

I'm glad you're O.K.

I don't know what to tell you about mace or pepper spray. I just rely on the fact that my dog would protect me if a stranger tried to enter my house.

A new thing of pepper spray on your keychain and maybe a small portable airhorn to keep in your car? They must make little ones. I've always worried that this will happen to me; our street is lots of turns off the main road and if someone's following me onto my street or I think they're following me, I don't pull into my driveway. I'll keep driving, once I even drove to the police station, but thankfully they turned off when I got close.

I'm really glad that you're ok, thankfully your DH was close behind and 911 has your call recorded just in case that whack job tries this again. :grouphug:

:hug:Holy Crap! How scary! I'm glad you are alright. You were very brave and kept your wits...good job. I worry about that every night I come home from work. I am hyper aware and look all around before I even get out of my car. And I HATE leaving my store at night because every other store in our corner is closed and all the cars are usually gone. We leave in two or threes, and generally wait until everyone's car start and we are all safely locked in, but it's still creepy. My mom used to carry pepper spray, and maybe a small air horn or something like that would make you feel more secure?

Your cell phone was probably the best thing in this case. No one pays attention to alarms/horns/etc because there have been so many false alarms with those things. Pepper spray and similar can harm you just as easily as an assailant.

That is so terrifying! You definitely kept your wits about you and reacted in the smartest way possible.

I've always been a little leery of garages. Many years ago, my best friend was attacked in her garage. She was stepping out of the inside door to get into her car and she was jumped.

First I would suggest that you put up motion detector lights. You mentioned how everything around you was pitch black, including the garage and the street. A motion detector might deter someone from hanging around and you also would be able to see anyone hanging around.

I carry my keys in my fist....in case I have to hit someone.

For my house I have a german shepard. We live on a side street, but it's very busy. We have a business across the street from us. The workers come in front of our home to smoke. I make sure they and anyone else in the area that I don't recognize see my dog.

Glad dh came home, that had to be really scary.

That is absolutely frightening. I'm so glad you are okay AND that they caught the guy. I hope he was breaking his parole or something and that they keep him behind bars.

I always try to watch my garage door close once I've stepped inside the house to make sure the garage door closes all the way and that no one sneaks in through it. I always thought I was just paranoid, but apparantly it's not a bad idea. And after hearing this I may start closing the garage door while I'm still inside the car. I've noticed that our neighbors do that, but I always thought they were just being unfriendly and didn't want to talk .

OMG! How HORRIBLE!!!!!

Do you not have lightening when you open your garage? If not, time to update you garage.

Also motion detection lighting sounds in order here as well.

That way you can check your surroundings clearly before you exit your car in the garage.

OP, No one should have been out at that hour soliciting anything. Our town has a cut off time of 5:00 PM and even then you have to hav a permit.

I would contact the police dept and find out just who this person was and report him to the company he said he was representing.

TC:cool1:

I was thinking that the panic button to your car might help? I've heard that you could also keep it on your night stand and could set the alarm off if someone tried to breakin.

Glad you are o.k.

:scared1::eek::scared1::eek:

Wow. I was literally saking as I read this. I can only imagine how you felt! So glad you're okay, but I would really be wondering what happened to the guy. If he's out roaming the streets again, I'd want to know and keep my wits about me. :thumbsup2

That must have been so frightening for you. I'm so glad your husband was right behind you and the guy was caught by the police. It seems like we can not trust anywhere to be 100% safe today. Glad you were not hurt and everything turned out OK.

Did the police confirm his story? Does he really work for the cable company? How scary!

I'm glad you are okay. I would have been scared out of my mind., I would have got back in my car and left.

I'm glad you are okay!:grouphug:
I really don't think a 'rape alarm' would help, when was the last time you paid attention to a car alarm?
I definitely think motion lights and pepper spray
