Mammogram Dangers

I'll take my chances with mammogram; my younger sister just finished her radiation treatments for a.very tiny but aggressive breast cancer that was.t even palpable. But they caught it extremely early on mammogram, followed by confirmation by biopsy.

Considering that one of the references was Wikipedia and none of the references were legitimate medical journals I dont think this article is worth much. And this guy is a Maximum Living Doctor? What the heck is that?9

Dudes a chiropractor-probably of the sort who tells you "adjustments" and changing your diet will cure cancer. My mother and my sister in law are both alive today because mamography found their tumors before they would have been found by an exam-ill take my chances with a mamogram thanks.

Ugh.......wish I didn't click this link today. I'm going for my mammo next week and am now reconsidering. Your damned if you do and damned if you don't. Why does this world we live in have to be so complicating and scary!!!!!!:confused3

My mom put off getting mammograms. She died of breast cancer that was caught too late. She went through a mastectomy and years of chemo and radiation.

I have a friend whose early stage breast cancer was found through mammogram, had a lumpectomy and radiation and she's fine over 10 years later.

I wouldn't put a lot of faith in an article that posts this

Many women have undergone unnecessary chemotherapy, radiation and mastectomies after receiving false positive results on a mammogram.

I don't know of any woman that has had a false positive on a mammogram go through this..no legitimate doctor is going to do surgery, chemo and radiation without doing a biopsy....so this statement just made me dismiss the entire article and to dismiss the person who wrote it.

this scares the daylights out of me. I think of all the radiation between dental x-rays, mammograms etc. I have had to go back for additional images because of dense tissue, so I usually wind up getting more than just the routine mammograms. It really scares me. I thought I read somewhere that the digital mammography uses less radiation. Not sure if that is true.

What age do most women start getting Mammograms and how often do you go? I had my first one last year at age 39 (no medical history). I am due to go again next week. Is it necessary to go yearly at my age?

FYI.

My good friend just had a surgery. Week or two earlier mammogram did NOT show anything. She accidentally felt something while in a shower, Breast Cancer that was already spreading under her arm...

Bottom line, mammogram can not be the only source of diagnoses or check up for that matter.

I went 4 years without getting a mammogram and have advanced stage breast cancer. I was diagnosed at 49 but could have had it for those 4 years.

I have had surgery, radiation, various forms of chemo for years, had lung removal surgery after it spread. All because I didn't want to go annually.

I will continue with my yearly mammograms.

Yes, that article can freak people out, but the best detection is that xray every year.

I have heard too many stories of the cancer being caught early and saving a life to ever risk not going.

This.

For me, fortunately, the cancer was still confined to the breast, but I'd have a much better long-term prognosis, and wouldn't have had to do chemo, if I hadn't been such an idiot and skipped a couple of annual mammos.

See I was just diagnosed this month with breast cancer, still in the ducts Stage 0, there is no lump maybe a little thickness, but that may have always been there. I have been told it would NOT probably have been caught with out a mammogram. I am having a bilateral mastectomy because of many issues it is the right choice, but I hopefully wont need chemo or radiation because it was caught early. GET YOUR MAMMOGRAMS!

You really have to take these types of articles with a grain of salt. The sources at the bottom are dubious and statements such as this one are laughable:

'The incidence of certain forms of breast cancer such as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) has increased by 328% since mammography was introduced. '

Well, of course it has! DCIS is very early breast cancer and if it weren't for mammograms, those cancer would have been diagnosed at a later stage after they had already spread. I, too, will continue to get my yearly mammograms.

THIS! Mammograms aren't "positive" or "negative", they show areas that need further investigation whether it be via biopsy, mri, etc. Even with a positive biopsy result, most docs will do an MRI prior to surgery to look for anything that the mammogram didn't find. In my case another suspicious area showed up on the MRI, in a spot that could not easily be accessed with a needle biopsy. That info changed the plan of surgery to something that could take out that spot as well. It was biopsied after surgery and found to be non cancerous (thank goodness cancer was only in 1 place) but I feel better that they had the best possible info prior to doing the surgery.

Cannot say enough about getting mammograms annually, you never think YOU'RE going to be the one getting cancer until it happens. Then the low risk from mammograms seems pretty insignificant believe me

I agree.

Beware of quacks.

Yes this is what I have!

I no longer get mamograms. I did for many years. The above link with references is why. It goes into other screening tests too. I do follow a whole food plant based diet.

Both those articles were written by quacks.

In the grand scheme of things, there are other things that are bigger worries than that. The chemicals in our foods, the chemicals in our homes, and the chemicals in our health and beauty products and in our environment are probably a bigger concern. I worry more about the continuous exposure to those things day in and day out than I do about the radiation in my annual mammogram.

Besides, I'm far more likely to be hit by a bus as I'm leaving the mammogram place than to die from cancer caused by the radiation.
