My grandmother used to make the best steak sandwiches but I don't know how she did it - does anyone have a recipe:

It was sliced steak (don't know what kind of steak) on buttered toast and you put it under the oven broiler to cook. That's all I remember!

try using flank steak or strip (skirt?) steak. there best for sandwich making. :D

If you're asking a true Philadelphian, then the ones you've described are NOT it!

You need to have shredded/chopped/chipped beef (kind of like the SteakUmm kind, but NOT SteakUmm). Maybe someone can tell you the exact kind.

It needs to be grilled with onions (maybe green peppers) and then put on a hoagie roll. You can melt cheese on top.

You do NOT, as some people tend to do, put mayonnaise, lettuce, tomatoes, etc on it. If you want a "pizza steak" you can add some pizza sauce on the top. Pickle slices and hot peppers are good too.

I grew up in Allentown, PA, not far from Philly and that's the way they do it there.;)

I'm from South Jersey & make Philly cheesesteaks. You use chip steak. If you can't get fresh chip steak there is a co. - Landis, that makes a pretty good frozen chip steak. Some people like the steak in one piece but I like to break it up when I put it in the pan. It doesn't matter but a Philly steak is whole not chopped. I fry the steak in olive oil but veg. oil is fine. I like fried onions on mine and fried long hot peppers. You can use American cheese or Provolone but a true Philly steak is Cheez Wiz. A good roll can make all the difference. Lettuce & tomatoes on a cheesesteak is a cheesesteak hoagie.

OMG I am sooooooooooo hungry for a Philly steak right now!! All you need to do is add some Amoroso's bread and a tastykake for desert :p

I also miss Wawa hoagies! :(

I guess I'm just remembering the days before there was Cheez Whiz... The ORIGINAL Philly cheesesteak was sliced American or Provolone cheese melted on the top of the meat.

Cheez Whiz would not make me happy -- that's just processed cheese product. Oh, well...

DH doesn't like his with Cheez Wiz either. He prefers American. I like it with any cheese. I'm definitely not picky.

i guess i'm confused -- i always thought "american cheese" was processed cheese as well (like cheez whiz or velveeta, only in slices).

I just wanted to say that FOJMO is right. I called my mom, who grew up in Philly & she said the original Philly cheesesteak was not Cheez Wiz. I guess it was American or Provolone. Something white anyway. I think now-a-days people associate Wiz with Philly cheesesteaks myself included. Lucky for us it doesn't matter because it's all good. :D
