I need some creative, inexpensive ideas on how to make our basment look nice. We CANNOT paint the floor so that option is out. We don't have the concrete walls, there is insulation covered by white plastic.

Any ideas???

Area rugs? And drywall.

My sister has a huge unfinished basement that they use as a rec room. What they did was buy some carpet remnants from a carpet outlet store to lay down on the floor. Then they hung sheets over the insulated walls on curtain rods, but if it is too wide, you could probably tack sheets to the studs. They even put a woodstove down there since it is not heated space. They have parties and the kids love hanging out down there.

Get carpet remnants from a carpet store (the end rolls they generally sell for $20 or so). Hang sheets or tablecloths on the walls-tack them up with small nails. You could try going to Goodwill or looking for holiday linens, etc. after Christmas. Since you can't paint I am going to assume you are renting and can't put up sheetrock either, right?

Yes, we are renting. So anything too permanent I'd rather not do. But I do like the idea of putting up sheets to cover the insulation. There is heat and a/c vents down there so it's nice and warm right now. Dh's computer desk is down there and I just want to make it a little nicer for him.

Keep the ideas coming!! I love them!

If you don't want to put up sheets, maybe get cheap paneling. They still make it I think. Although it's called a different name I think. You can lightly tack it to the studs and it can be easily removed in panels.

Monitor how much moisture is down in the basement. They tend to be damp. You may have to get a dehumidifier. A computer in a humid environment is not a good combo.
