We are beyond excited to have found out today that we can go to Disney with MAW in December and stay at GKTW!!! We have been through quite a year... and I thought I would share a bit of our story with you!!
So... last October our family packed up and boarded a plane for Tanzania where we were going to be living for the next few years working with orphans and doing business training in a remote village. We had sold our cars, rented out our house, quit jobs etc. Our daughter (Lola age 5) became ill a few months later and finally in February became sick enough that we made the 3 day drive (YEs!! 3 days!!) to the nearest decent hospital. After waiting for blood test results, we were told she had mono. She was quite sick, so we decided to return to the states for a couple weeks to get her better before returning to our home in the middle of no where Africa.

We arrived into Chicago Feb of 2011 wearing shorts, flip flops and tank tops. (we had no idea we would be returning to the states prior to departing to the hospital in Tanzania). There was at least a foot of snow on the ground and it was COLD.

The next morning we went to our local childrens hospital. Lola had some tests done and a few hours later we were told by the dr that she was concerned Lola had cancer. WHAT?!!!! No. she has mono. Not cancer. Valentines day she was diagnosed with Leukemia. Worst. day. ever. Not only did our daughter have cancer, but we couldn't return home to Tanzania. We had no jobs, no home, no car, no clothes, NOTHING!!! We had no idea what to do!!!

Let's fast forward a bit to speed up the story!! It is 8 months later, we have cars, we bought clothes and after living in friends basement for 4 months we even bought a house. It has been a rough road up to now, but we feel like life is coming together and we are surviving rather well. I have never in my life felt more like I needed a vacation!!

So... we are so EXCITED to be able to go to disney in a couple months!!! It will be wonderful for our family to step back from this crazy life we are living. Lola is doing very well after a rough run and I just know she (and her 4 yr old sister) will have a blast at disney!!! To top it all off we are expecting our 3rd child!! So many blessings in our life to dull all the hurt we have been through!

Wanted to add- if you want to check out our full story please check out our blog- followingthecall.org It has info about our work in Africa and about Lola, along with other totally random stuff :)

Our flights have been booked!! We will be leaving from Michigan on Dec 10, and returning december 19!!! We will be staying for 6 nights at GKTW, and I am in the process of finding a place to stay for our last 3 nights there. :) We are SO EXCITED!!!

I am so sorry to hear about your precious little one ,will send prayers that God is with her and your family.

Glad to hear you and your family will be able to forget the troubles you have been through even if for a little while in a magical place.

Congrats on the new little one.

We too will hopefully be in Disney(POP) Dec.11-17th also to find some peace from our year and with the grace of God we will be able to go.

Looking forward to reading about all your plans.

Just read your blog.
You and your DH are such wonderful strong parents and God has plans for all of you.
It brought such a blessing to me to read about your daughters prayers and want she wished for, she is one of Gods little angels placed here on earth to teach us all about his wonderful grace and the miracles he can do for us.

I am so glad things are looking better for your family and was honored and blessed to have read your journey and will love to continuing to read.

I would love to follow you on facebook

God Bless

Wow! What a journey your family has been on! Happy for Lola that she is getting her wish to go to Disney World! She and her sister are the perfect age to experience all that GKTW and the parks has to offer them. You will all love the Christmas decorations and special things going on in each park.

Go to the Disabilities Board to the Make a Wish thread for more information to help you plan your trip. The first page has a lot of good information and links to past trip reports. You can post questions there if you don't get answers here.

God bless you for the wonderful work He has called you and your family to do! This will give something for Lola to look forward to as she goes through her treatments! We will be praying for her and the whole family!

Wow, what a story! You have such a positive attitude, even though it sounds like it's been a tough time for you and your family. I'm definitely following along and am really glad you guys are getting to do a trip to WDW! :) :goodvibes

Hello again!! I have a question for any of you who have been to disney before... My make a wish coordinator emailed me today that in our package she is including a cash amount to cover Lola going to get her hair/nails/makeup done at the bippity boppity boutique (sp??). Has anyone ever brought their daughter there when she had no hair?? From what i've seen it looks like hair is a big part of what they do... but Lola is basically bald. Do they have anything (headbands etc) for kids without hair??
Thanks for any suggestions in this area!!
