Lets give Albert Hainsworth the worst sportsman of the year award. Lets also give him a date in court. Last night Hainsworth of the Titans, visciously kicked the Cowboy center in the head, requiring him to get 30 stitches. That's a lot of blood! If you or I did it, we would be in hand cuffs. He does it, HE MISSES A COUPLE OF DAYS OF WORK!!! :confused3

Actually, no, he's missing 35 days of work (5 weeks), unpaid (which these days in sports is unheard of), AND the player he stepped on is in the process of deciding whether he wants to press charges or not (it's his choice, not the NFL's).

If you were the victim of spousal abuse, an assault on the street by a stranger or a neighbor, it wouldn't be "your choice" to press charges. Its an option that most people don't have. 35 days of work is nothing compared to the visciousness of the attack. In fact, perhaps the Titan's team manager and owners should decide if he represents the kind of players they want on his team. I think FIRED would be an appropriate response.

It happened on Sunday, not last night. A 5-game suspension is unprecedented, and will cost Haynesworth almost 1/3 of his salary. Like Bob Slydell said, it's Andre Gurode's call to press charges, and the Nashville PD said they would assist him if he decides to. I hope he does.

Yes. This was the longest suspension in NFL history for on field activities. He's literally missing 1/3 of his yearly salary. NOT an insignificant amt

People say this all the time - but it simply isn't true. If you stomp somebody and bloodied you - and they haven't filed charges against you (yet?) the police aren't going to hear about it, come to your door and arrest you, are they?

Fact is, you wouldn't even miss a day of work.

What would you miss if you did the same thing in the work place??

Except if it were to happen to you or I it wouldn't be witnessed by thousands of people. The police have not only heard about it but they can watch it, and re watch it thanks to the miracle of video tape. Its time for this guy to hang up his cleats.

You could at least get his name right. Haynesworth. If you're going to start a thread (on a topic where there is already at least one thread), how hard is it to get the name right?

I agree that is up to the player to press charges, not the league or the local police.

I also heard this morning that the players union will likely fight the fine because of the way his salary is being targeted. They are going for part of the signing bonus, basically because Haynesworth doesn't make that much money (in NFL terms of course).

Why did you start you own thread? Why not discuss this with the other people who are interested on the thread that was started the day the event actually happened?

Thing is, though, he DID THIS at work. In full view of not only his coworkers and employer, but in front of millions of witnesses. I truly doubt any of us would retain employment under like circumstances and I truly doubt we'd find other employment very easily.

The attempt to compare the typical work place to pro sports is pretty ridiculous.

I was about to post something like this as well. How many other workplaces encourage their employees to knock each other to the ground continuously? :confused3 What football players do on a weekly basis as part of the game itself would be assault on the street.

Yeah, I never got used to my competitors coming in the door and tackling me. ;)

No, it's not. What he did is NOT typical of the sport(i.e. his vocation) itself. It was not just one hell of a clean tackle that knocked a guy into next week. It was a vicious stomp on a man's unprotected face. Now, you tell me how THAT is within the bounds of the sport (i.e. his workplace) and maybe we'll talk about how "ridiculous" the analogy is.

Nobody is saying football isn't a highly physical game, for heaven's sake. But, please, give the guy a pass because he's an athlete. I can't roll my eyes enough at that illogic.

When's the last time the police arrested somebody for causing minor injuries on somebody when they didn't witness the event but only saw it on tape and when the victim didn't press charges???

Who's giving him a pass?? :confused3 Seems to me that everyone is in agreement that he should be suspended (which he was -- though there may be disagreements as to the length) and that legal action should be made available to the victim (which is being discussed).

He's not been given a 'pass' just yet. The 5 game suspension will cost him nearly $200K and at his salary level that's a chunk of change.

Just as in a domestic assault. It's up to the person who was assaulted to file charges (as many of you know, a LOT of women won't). There's also the possibility of civil charges which can cost him even more money.

This ain't done yet.
