Major DLR Entertainment Cuts

Has anyone in this thread really been super upset about the refurbishment stuff? If so, I must have forgotten those posts already. :confused3

Not this particular thread but there have been many lately about this sort of thing. Too many for me personally but I understand people are upset. However you are choosing to visit DL and I just get annoyed that some people seem to feel entitled to having everything open and ready for their trip when it is impossible for disney to do so year round. By doing refurbs in jan/feb they are inconveniencing less guests.

Well...

hhmmm... i am sad to see there won't be parades. i think they should keep those.:confused3

...I have been watching the calendar hoping to see SOMETHING added. We arive on Jan 10 and there is no entertainment at all until the fireworks the weekend of MLK...

...I am still shocked that they may not show fireworks on the weekend during the main street parade rehab. It's bad enough to go off season and not have all the shows running, but most people who go off season know that they do show the fireworks on the weekends. So that sucks for those planning while that rehab is happening. :sad2:

...If the shows, parades, and fireworks are gone we won't be going. I can see the theme now "Full Disney Prices: Pseudo-Disney Experience: Will you still Celebrate?"

We are heading to CA from MA in Feb and booked a very expensive room in the Grand Californian. Sure hope these rumors of no parades and no fireworks turn out to be false. They sure didn't tell us "Well, nothing will be open while you are here so you get a big discount on your room for going to the time and expense of flying all the way out here" when we booked our room earlier today. Sighhhhh

I would have to answer "yes" to your question, LucyDingo.

LucyDingo, there also was another thread on here with the same topic how people DO plan their trips around 1 attraction being open or not.

CMs are now receiving formal notification of the Entertainment situation. Officially, as The Year of a Million Dreams Celebration comes to a close, many of the DLR's entertainment offerings are now being updated for the "What Will You Celebrate?" promotion.

  • The "Where Dreams Come True" pre-parade and the Dream Suite Celebration in New Orleans Square will have their final run on 30 December.
  • "A Christmas Fantasy Parade" and the "Believe...In Holiday Magic" Fireworks Spectacular will run through the end of the holiday season on 4 January.
  • The Royal Coronation Ceremony and Disney Princess Storytelling at Disney's Princess Fantasy Faire in Fantasyland will have their last showings on 4 January. The Disney Princess Meet-n-Greet location will continue to be maintained at its current location.
  • The "Remember...Dreams Come True" fireworks spectacular will be presented in the skies over Disneyland Park on Martin Luther King Jr. Day Weekend (17-19 Jan.) and President's Day Weekend (13-16 Feb.), with a full return scheduled for March 2009.
  • Fantasmic! will run daily through January and February.
  • There will be no parades at Disneyland Park after the holidays due to track work being done on Main Street USA.
  • "Celebrate! A STREET PARTY" will debut on Main Street USA on 27 March.

A few thoughts here related to entertainment closings:

First off, in this day and age of internet (mis)information there are bound to be rumors that end up reported as fact when they're not even close. I think it's best to take a wait and see approach until we have a much better idea of what's going on in all divisions of entertainment. There's a major difference between the all the parades, shows, and entertainment being dark as opposed to some of them being dark for a couple of months. I stand by my long held rule of not believing everything you read on the web.

Second, I don't think we know fully what's happening with the parade yet. Obviously, it will be down while they're doing pavement work, but we have no idea how the temporary "Celebrate" parade is going to be received. I suspect that if nobody cares and/or hates it, Disneyland will be quick to bring the Parade of Dreams back until the "rumored" new parade comes in 2010 for the 55th anniversary.

Third, I note that they're not closing the biggest draw of the PFF. The princess meet and greet will still be there and I wonder if the other activities won't make a return in the summer months as attendance increases. If it were up to me, I'd close down the PFF altogether and make that area into a brand new attraction and have the princesses do meet and greets by the castle where they belong. For me, waiting for the PFF and not seeing my favorite princess would be like standing in line for Space Mountain for 45 minutes only to find out that while I was in line, they really put me in line for Winnie the Pooh.

Fourth, I feel really bad for WDW. Sometimes you have to take an attraction down and give it a nice refurbishment. Sure, it stunk while Space Mountain was down for a long time, but it was worth the wait and then some. I think sometimes we all take Disney a little bit too seriously and get all bent out of shape when the company doesn't do exactly what we want when we want it.

Just a note on this part. The Celebrate street party is a fairly major part of the "What Will You Celebrate?" promotion, and is being implemented on directions from the powers that be at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts (aka Disney Parks). If DLR Entertainment pulls it, IMO, it will be at their peril.

If it doesn't receive such a positive guest response, they may decide to re-add POD as a Night Parade, but this Street Show is most likely here to stay for the year, possibly short a reaction that makes "Light Magic" or "Eureka! The California Adventure Parade" look like one of Disneyland's better-loved parades.

There was a rumor that Fantasmic would be running all during the week in March. It looks like a hope and see. I'm assuming the Main Street entrance will still be open, or will it, and main street shops be closed? anyone know

Thank you, I completely agree. :thumbsup2

And everything on mainstreet should remain open shop wise because the sidewalks will be open for people to walk upon.

Except do you have any idea how amazingly crowded the sidewalks would be if this were to happen? And I am certain there would be safety concerns given that it would be an active construction site.

The Celebrate Parade is not temporary, it's part of the new Celebration promotion. Parade of Dreams, Dream Squad, Dream Fireworks, etc... are all being retired as the YOAMD promotion is ending 12/31/2008.

Actually, the Fireworks (and POD, for that matter) were launched as part of Disneyland Park's 50th Anniversary celebration, and aren't tied in with The Year of a Million Dreams Celebration in any way, shape, or form (save the pre-parade and the priority viewing that were given away).

The fireworks will be returning to normal come March.

Well...
I would have to answer "yes" to your question, LucyDingo.

I don't think I, or anyone else who has posted in this thread, have a sense of entitlement because we have expressed concern over how Disney is handling their planning calendar and refurb situation. (Gee, I pay for everything. A sense of entitlement would be more like if I tripped at DL and then asked them what are they going to do for me since I tripped on their property even if it was my fault.) I am concerned for my fellow Disney Planners and myself. And most of the people who have posted in this thread, and others I've seen, are expressing concern over the refurb, and hoping and wishing that something they have looked forward to for a long time is going to be up and running. What is wrong with that? :confused3 It's a message board. That's what it's here for.
I don't think it's unreasonable, since I am leaving on my trip in less than 4 days, to expect that Disney should update their calendar. (They haven't; F! is still not showing on the calendar after Dec. 31.) The calendar is there for a reason -- to plan out your DL experience. Disney encourages this. They have really dropped the ball on this one.
I totally understand that they have to do refurbs, agree that they need to be done, and obviously that would mean that they do it off season. My main concern (and I think most of the people posting in these planning related threads) is that Disney isn't updating their planning calendars -- so how can they plan? :headache: Yes there are a lot of other things to do at DL, but if the info on the calendar is not there to plan with, what are we supposed to do, call our psychic friends network? :confused3 ;)
I am one of those who intentionally go every year at peak time, and know I will have massive crowds to deal with; they don't bother me, I'm used to it. In exchange, I get to enjoy everything the park offers -- barring any unplanned emergency. I understand that.
Normally they do show the fireworks on the weekends even during the slow/off peak periods so it's perfectly understandable that people would be concerned by the lack of fireworks on the weekend especially if they booked their travel plans months ago. There is no way in heck that Disney did not know about this Main St refurb well in advance. The fact that they have not updated their calendars so that their customers can plan accordingly is not acceptable, imho. Yes, things need to be fixed and can't be running 365 days a year, but it's not impossible for them to update their planning calendars in advance is it? They do it all the time. They've just dropped the ball on it in these last few months. (Or maybe it was intentional, since it was there, and then suddenly, it wasn't there. And then it was back again, but still not completely current.) Anyone who has ever worked for any major corporation who had equipment or site refurbs knows -- a refurb of the magnitude of the one planned for Main St is a MAJOR refurb that was probably planned last year at the latest. It's the corporate way -- they don't do anything on a whim; this was planned out for a long time. The least they should do as a courtesy for people who are planning a DL trip is to update their calendars to reflect current info. If you don't think it's right for people to get upset, concerned or even wonder about the refurbs, (some of those posts you quoted Dreams seemed more like people wondering and hoping for things to be up and running) because some things are going to be down, you have the right to think that. I also think that anyone going anytime in the near future has the right to be concerned and or upset, since Disney has still not updated their planning calendars to reflect the most current info about F! showing 5 days a week and it doesn't say theat Main Street will be down for refurb either.
And by the way, Dreams, I did post that I was happy F! was going to be shown during my stay. I didn't know that it was to be scheduled 5 days a week, because, again, Disney didn't update the calendars to reflect that when I last posted.
I just checked through Jan 11, and it's still not showing up on the calendar. If it's true that it will be showing 5 days a week, then that's completely unacceptable. Maybe if they had updated their calendar, I and others would have known this. Then you would have probably seen a lot of happy posts. :cheer2: I see a lot of people write things on message boards like, "Unless I hear it from Disney then I won't believe it." It's not good to make assumptions that it will be showing 5 days a week when I haven't seen it on the DL planning calendar. That will only lead to disappointment if, in fact, they don't show it 5 days a week, right? I can see it now... Someone goes; F! doesn't show 5 days a week, and they post how disappointed they were because they read about it on The Dis, MP, MC, et al, and it was supposed to be showing. Then someone else comes along and says, "Did it show up on the DL planning calendar? Well that's what you get for making assumptions!" :rolleyes1 And that's why Disney should get on the ball with the DL planning calendar which was and is my biggest concern... Ya'll have a nice day. :flower3:
Hi wwomant! :flower3: I was just going to post over here what you wrote on MP about this! I'm glad they are showing F! Yay!:cheer2:
Disney really should update their calendar though, especially since someone posted that VP knew about this a few months ago.

As a previous poster stated, it's probably more about the fact that the disneyland.com calendar is really, really inaccurate.

And if those threads annoy you, you probably shouldn't open them.

Well...

I would have to answer "yes" to your question, LucyDingo.

I don't think any of those people are really complaining. It just sounds like some people are disappointed. And guess what...they are allowed to be disappointed. And they are even allowed to express that disappointment on a message board. They are allowed to express their opinions and their emotions (even if it annoys you.) Just like you're allowed to come on this message board and complain about them (even though that might annoy people too.)

LucyDingo, there also was another thread on here with the same topic how people DO plan their trips around 1 attraction being open or not.

If that's they way people want to plan...than so be it. It doesn't concern me how other people plan. I will admit, if I saw Space Mountain was going to be closed when I was planning, I'd probably adjust my dates. Same goes for Expedition Everest at AK.

Thank you to everyone who has responded to what I originally posted to confirm or deny the entertainment schedules! It really helps with everyone's planning! :)

I didnt say they cannot express their feelings...I guess I just dont see why people feel they are owed a calendar 3 months out. Is it nice that disney has done this in the past? Heck yes it is! But are they required to...probably not. I think it's been a thing that disney has done to help their guests in the past with planning however I do not believe it is madatory.

Courtney sorry your thread went another direction...thank you for posting your original info :thumbsup2

I'm really happy about it too! It is kind of crazy though that disneyland.com still doesn't have F! showing up for January 1 even, only 3 days away. I would have thought it'd be much more accurate than this.

January isn't three months out.

Cool to know. I have not heard anything saying the same fireworks show will be returning. Thanks for the info!

Ummm.... I feel the need to just state for others on this board that I never said anyone annoys me by expressing their opinions or emotions here and I have not complained about anyone.

LucyDingo, please don't try to stir a pot that doesn't exist.

Dreams, wouldn't they open the back ways if that was the case? How else would they get people in and out if they don't have MS open? Am I missing something? I thought MS was the only in/out path?

January isn't three months out.

Nope, it's 3 days out..actually 3 1/2 if you're on CA time. :) And I too have found it difficult to plan our trip, but we are just going to play it by ear and see what's on the daily schedules. Sure that means we can't plan in advance but every time we do that our plans get shucked anyway. LOL I have 5 days until I leave......and I have NO plans for anything other than the DEP because that's the only thing really on the schedule. LOL

Have a good trip! We have a few more weeks to go. We never plan exactly what we're doing either. We just know which days we'll be in the parks. And we know we'll go straight to Space Mountain when we get there (because that's what we always do.)

Courtney sorry your thread went another direction...thank you for posting your original info :thumbsup2

I totally missed your post! :goodvibes

It's okay! I was just saying thank you not to get things back on track but because I didn't say it earlier! :thumbsup2
