Major back problems - need advice!

I would get a 2nd opinion at a fairly large medical center with a "spine" program/. They do exist. Do a bit of Internet research.

I understand everyone's fear of back surgery and its possible ramifications...but for a physician to tell someone "you're going to be in pain, learn to live with it" is unacceptable. Even if there is no treatment for the back injury itself, there are pain management specialists who can help with th epain, there are alternative therapies such as yoga & acupuncture, which people have had success with as well.

The bottom line is that most MDs today recommend who they know. They don't go outside of their circle of comfort, even if soemone elsewhere may be the expert in a certain field.

Do a little research on the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. My primary MD thinks very highly of them and their orthopedic programs. here's a start for you:
