We have a Red Flag law in CO, but it didn't prevent the Club Q shooting last November because the sheriff in the county said he would not enforce the law.
Hopefully that clown is gone or will be gone next election. Sheriffs, and any law enforcement person, is supposed to enforce the laws, not selectively enforce, but rather, enforce. Amazing!!!

So easy to erase peoples' lives with the standard weapon of choice of mass murderers. So sad we have arrived where we are today.

People, these are people. They were alive, like you and me, on Wednesday, enjoying life with their friends and families. Now? Today? Dead. And 13 others? Wounded by a killing maniac a killing maniac with a killing machine. Very sad where we are today.

My thoughts are that he is dead. I think he probably knew there was no way out so he ended his life.

Honestly, it's one thing to *not* enforce but if you are law enforcement and you choose not to enforce and that directly results in a crime, you should be sued out of everything you own, lose your job, and have the families that lost loved ones able to put you in the town square and throw stuff at you.

A letter was found in the shooter’s home, addressed to his son, and believed to be a suicide note.

I’m curious to know what those who are very anti-gun would like to see in a national gun control plan. What would you consider to be acceptable? I do believe we already have many laws on the books but unfortunately, they don’t always seem to be adhered to. And of course, we will still have the problem of illegally obtained guns that seem to be so prevalent in our inner cities, what do you propose to do about those guns? I think it would be more helpful and conducive to a constructive conversation to come up with some creative and good ideas instead of just throwing out snide remarks.

There was a thread on these boards recently that was removed or closed about the middle east and what’s going on there. Someone suggested that the people (the citizens) stand up for themselves against the terrorists. It was stated that the people have no way to protect themselves because they have no weapons. I do believe this is one of the reasons our founding fathers put the 2nd Amendment into the Constitution. I for one think it’s better for the citizens to have a way to defend themselves if needed then to be left at the mercy of powers that may not have its citizens best interest at heart.
Canada has a very good plan that works well. It fully allows sensible gun ownership but does not allow stupid gun ownership. So people can hunt and self protect but can’t pretend they are Rambo

Did I say they were? The post you replied to said "firearm deaths"and you told them they were wrong based on an entirely different statistic.
because they were. Massachusetts has more firearm deaths than Maine does. Massachusetts also has more homicides than Maine does. So it’s really irrelevant to talk about Massachusetts.

Per capita, Maine has about 3x more firearm deaths than Massachusetts. Both have very low homicide rates, with Maine slightly lower.

I think it goes without saying here he shouldn’t have had an assault weapon.

I don’t know if there were people there with their own weapons. If there were, it may not have been feasible to try to take this guy out while he was spraying bullets everywhere. I read stories every day, though, where ordinary citizens do courageous and selfless things to help themselves and others. So who knows? I suppose we’ll be hearing stories eventually of what went on in the moment. It would be reckless to try to take a shot at a gunman if there wasn’t a clear target, no? With the chaos of people running everywhere and an assault weapon being fired, it’s not like one could take their time and perfect their stance without becoming an easy target themselves. There’d have to be a judgement about chancing it in the moment - if there was even an opportunity. (Maybe some of those carrying were hit?) My thought was just that, seeing your post about carry laws in ME, things might’ve been different if someone carrying could’ve stopped the carnage. I’m pretty sure that’s the idea behind carrying. YMMV
Actually, most gun owners I know have a gun either for hunting or to protect their homes/selves when directly attacked. I don't think when someone decides to carry a gun, they do so to be able to stop a mass shooting. They are thinking more about protection during a home invasion, from being held up at the ATM, preventing being car jacked, etc. Most of the people I know who have guns use them for hunting, not for protecting themselves from a mass murderer.

Authorities are saying that Card obtained the weapon he used in his spree last July, before he started having his mental instability. His sister said he started hearing voices when he got his new hearing aids this fall; that's the mental issue they are referring to. There is speculation that losing his job is what caused him to snap. The found a weapon with him that could have been the one used in the shooting spree this week (but they don't have proof yet) and also a hand gun, and are saying that he killed himself.

There's a news conference at 10pm-ish (because it's already 10:15) that will hopefully answer some questions.

Yes. Again, Maine apparently has more deaths caused by accidental firearm discharge and suicide by firearms, and Massachusetts has about 50% more homicides per capita by other means, so comparisons between the two states are irrelevant.

Yes, this but I would go one step further and include politicians in the mix. The elected officials that are supposed to be working for the good of the people and the country. They take an oath to uphold the laws of the land and they don't. They definitely should be thrown out of office and all the rest of what you said.
