DH and I were thinking of vacationing in Maine next summer with our 2 teenage sons. We would be driving from Michigan. None of us have ever been there before. We would definitely want to spend time in Bar Harbor and visit Acadia National Park. Could we spend the whole week there (in Bar Harbor) with enough to do, or should we only spend a few nights there and a few nights in other locations? Other than Acadia, what are some other interesting things to do in the area? Any suggestions on hotels? Anything else?? I would love to hear how others have vacationed in this area. Thanks!

You'll love Bar Harbor! Its absolutely beautiful! Make sure you make reservations to take the CAT to Nova Scotia while you're in Bar Harbor!

Ditto the side trip to N.S. You may want to include a few nights there as well as Bar Harbor.

Don't let anyone trick you into going to Greenville, to take a trip on a boat across Moosehead. Just don't do it.

There's really tons to do in Bar Harbor, especially if the weather is nice, then you can spend a whole day at Sand Beach, which is the only beach made of seashells north of GA, did you know that? :teeth:

AND why not go to Greenville and go across the Big Lake......Stay a night or so ...you cna see more moose at night time.......what a spectacular sight ......Old Orchard beach is a gorgeous beach to see too.........My son and daughter in law always spend a week at Acadia

Because there's nothing in Greenville! And going across the Big Lake, lemme tell you, worst experience of my life :scared:

We're not fans of Greenville here. Black Flies big enough to carry you off and not even a McDonalds to stop and pee at!

As far as Bar Harbor goes, there are Whale Watching cruises that I recommend.... nothing like seeing a whale up close and personal! Plus you can see the mansions on the ocean that you can NOT see from land... very cool. You might even spot a celebrity or two in town.

edited because it sounded like there were whale watching cruises in Greenville... :rotfl2:

Thanks for the replies! Can we plan to spend the entire time in staying in Bar Harbor then, and just do day trips to nearby areas? Going to Nova Scotia is something I hadn't even thought of doing. Would taking a day trip there be enough time to make it worth the trip? Should we stay right in Bar Harbor, or one of the other nearby towns? Any hotel recommendations?
