Main Street is no place for corporate branding

I have no problem with Starbucks coffee being served IN Main Street Bakery but a STARBUCKS storefront is totally different from the things you mention above. Of course there will be A/C etc on Main Street but the Starbucks storefront is unprecendented. A list of storefronts on Main Street would include all sorts of stores that are in keeping with the theme of turn of the century: Emporium, Ice Cream Parlour, Barber Shop, Newstand, Penny Arcade, Confectionary, Clothiers, Shooting Gallery, Cone Shop, etc. Adding a Starbucks storefront is not in line with this. The brands that were on Main Street in signage, etc were in keeping with this theme: Coke was around, Carnation was around , Gibson Girl was around...I don't see how this concept is not embraced by true Disney fans. :sad2: I don't think this Starbucks storefront is going to be without signage and logos, and THAT is my problem with this.

they are going to be serving Starbucks coffee IN Main Street Bakery. of course, there will be some signage and logos but is true already of nescafe and others.

I've tried to figure out why having Starbucks on Main Street bothers me more than other corporations, and it boils down to a couple things for me.

First, the "cult" of Starbucks. There are so many people I know for whom their morning Starbucks is a ritual. People act in a certain way inside a Starbucks (in my town, often hurriedly, rudely, blinders on to the rest of the world until they get their fix), they have their own culture (got the whole country to say 'Venti' instead of 'Large'). People seem proud of how complex and difficult their orders are, as though it's a badge of honor, and the company encourages this. My fear is that this corporate culture and the Starbucks "groupies" behavior will bleed into Main Street..
So ... kind of like the cult of Disney, then. People act in a certain way inside WDW (often hurriedly, rudely, blinders on to the rest of the world until they get their FP), they have their own culture (got the whole country to say "DH" instead of "dear husband"). People seem proud of how complex and difficult their touring plans are, as though it's a badge of honor, and the company encourages this. This corporate culture and the Disney "groupies" have taken over Main Street. ;)

Second, because as someone above said, there's going to be an obnoxious line out the door first thing in the morning, crowding up the street right at a time when a lot of people are passing through..
OR ... the larger footprint and more open concept design of the new Bakery will pull that line inside and make the sidewalk less crowded. :thumbsup2

(I have to admit to agreeing a tiny bit with the poster who says that it doesn't fit in with the turn-of-the-century theme, although it's true that this has never stopped Disney before.).
It never even stopped Walt. There were dozens of brands on Main Street in Disneyland in 1955 that didn't fit in with the turn-of-the-century theme. And, as was mentioned, even the OMG-don't-get-rid-of-it!! Tollhouse Cookie ice cream sandwich wouldn't qualify, as Tollhouse Cookies weren't invented until the 1930s. (Although, I'll bet if Disney decided to take them away because they didn't fit with the theme, people would applaud that as a theming victory, don't you think ... :rolleyes1)

UPDATE 11/12: Here’s some additional information about our Walt Disney World Resort Starbucks locations. The Main Street Bakery will keep its name and theming when it reopens in early summer. It’ll also continue to serve Disney favorites like cookies, brownies and seasonal cupcakes, in addition to Starbucks signature beverages and other items. And for those of you who asked in comments, the cinnamon rolls are available at Gaston’s Tavern in New Fantasyland, and the ice cream sandwiches are available at Plaza Ice Cream Parlor on Main Street, U.S.A.

If Disney would have said this in the first place, there would not have been the huge overreaction.

Lol, nicely done!!:thumbsup2

I read on the Starbucks website that it will be a "Starbucks Store" not that their beverages will be sold in Main Street Bakery. IF it remains Main Street Bakery and there is no "Starbucks" signage or logo branding on the exterior, then I am fine with it. However, if it resembles the DCA Starbucks or has logo on branding of any kind on exterior, then I have a problem.

Why do you keep using things like Nescafe as an argument? Nescafe was created in 1930's, how is that even comparable to Starbucks?

I'm sure there will be a Starbucks sign on the exterior, just like there is a Nestle sign now. Just like there is a Eady's sign on the Ice Cream Parlor, just like the is a Coca Cola sign on Casey's. Why is Starbucks different?

Most likely logo will be outside, just like on other stores. This is unavoidable but it does not mean it will be huge, neon sign. Most likely small logo you will not really pay attention to unless you really look. Personally logo is the least that bothers me.

Nestle Company c1905
Edy's Ice Cream c1928
Coca Cola c1886

Starbucks c1971

Which one doesn't belong?

They all belong.

Just because people have a problem with a brand doesn't mean it should not be represented. Just because Starbucks hasn't been around longer than me doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it being on Main Street.

Bet if a Cheesecake Factory went in on Main street there would not be this backlash.

so the problem with starbucks going in is the year the company was founded? seriously?

You do understand this is unprecendented don't you?
You do understand Walt's intention of Main Street don't you?
You do understand the importance and sanctity of Main Street don't you?

Have you ever read a Walt Disney biography?

Do you just look at WDW as a "theme park" in need of some decent coffee?

Yes, I am serious. And that's position, mock it if you want. Perhaps I am missing your more "intellectually reasonable" explanation. Have a magical Day! :goodvibes

If you want to reduce posters point to that, OK then, but it is clear that other 3 companies mentioned belong to the same era as Main Street and SB does not. Not that this actually bothers me but point is clear regardless.

None of us know what Walt would have thought. My opinion is, being a businessman he would have approved of anything that brought cash into the park.

And, "the sanctity of Main Street"? :sad2: It's a theme park, not a religious site.People are getting more than a little ridiculous with trying to make Walt Disney into a saint. He wasn't. He was a smart, creative guy, but he was in it to make money.

Well ... Sara Lee was the original sponsor of the MSB, and that company didn't exist until 1949. So ... that one's a stretch.

And the Starbucks storefront isn't "unprecedented" -- mostly because no one knows what the Starbucks storefront is going to look like. It's already been confirmed by Disney that the name of hte shop will continue to be Main Street Bakery, which means any storefront will not be Starbucks, but MSB. There may be a Starbucks logo somewhere, but there's no reason to believe that it will be any larger or more intrusive than the Edy's logo at the ice cream parlor or the Coke logo at Casey's.

I just don't get the drama or the sorrow.

No, it is not unprecedented. Nescafe was first introduced in 1930. it is not a turn of the century brand. neither is edy's. sara lee was on the original mainstreet (founded in 1949). Sanctity? seriously, it is holy to you? wow. main street has always been filled with brands.
