I always used to get a box of chocolates around $15.00 and then I was talking to my Aunt who is mail carrier and she was saying how much candy they get each year. I've since been getting a $20.00 gift card (usually from Best Buy) for our mail carrier just to change it up a little for him!

What a unique idea Betsy:goodvibes
cookies and a thank you card for Christmas. And often a cold bottle of water on hot days in the summer. He is a saint, my mailman, and we love him! :)

They all sound great:thumbsup2

We give 20.00 now, our last mailman got more because he was around forever and we really liked him.
We give the same to the garbagemen. The poland spring guy gets 10.00.

Never thought to tip our trashman, considering we bougth an expensive trash can on wheels and the first week we put it out, the guys threw it and the darn thing broke:headache:

I'd tip or give him a gift, if he deserved one.

Our regular guy sits in his truck most of the day, reading the magazines he's supposed to be delivering, and I'm lucky to get my mail by 4 pm. The people who cover on Monday (regular guy's day off) deliver everything before noon.

When regular guy is on vacation, we get no mail service. Then when he comes back, we get a notice that their is too much mail to fit in our box and we need to come pick it up.

No tips will be coming from me any time soon.

Man, that is horrible:mad:

I can't believe when your regular guy is on vacation you don't get mail service. I thought that right there was against the law, neither rain nor snow or whatever, lol, is supposed to prevent the mail, so I would complain right there about that one!

Maybe that is why they broke your new expensive trash can, no tip the year before, :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Seriously I wouldn't tip the garbage men either!

We got a card from our paper lady last year that said, "Don't forget to tip your carrier. Please send all Christmas tips to (and then listed her address)."
She was new last year and we had always tipped the person before her. She got nothing.

That's awful. I wouldn't tip her either and I would have taken her card to the postmaster general's office.

I tip my mailman $30 or $40. He's a great guy and he does a great job:thumbsup2 I also tip the garbage men about $1o each.

I was beginning to wonder if I and I think one other person who commented on here, was the only one///:rotfl2:

I've complained, my neighbors have complained. The answer we get over and over, "The mail was delivered. You must not have had any." Then most of us get that obnoxious "You have too much mail to deliver" notice. It's been going on for years. I've even told the postmaster I will come pick up my mail during our guy's vacation, but he insists the route is being covered and there isn't any mail being held to give me. Arghhhh! :headache:

Sounds like the entire post office is corrupt and lazy, that's a shame. Would make me nuts!

I don't tip our current mail carrier. He's been delivering our mail for about 3 years but have never tipped him. But then, he is my dad so I guess the gift he gets at the family gathering is enough. :rotfl2:

Anyway, some years, he does make out like a bandit...others not so much. And it really does depend on where he is working. But it's usually cookies and homemade stuff that he shares with everyone.

And for all those who have deal with bad mail carriers, . I feel so fortunate now.

I put a wrapped box of candy in the box with a Christmas card. I figure our mail carrier can take the box back to the post office and share or she can just take it home. :thumbsup2 She does a great job and I feel like I should do something.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I have a different mailman almost everyday, and I always get stuff that belongs to my neighbors and vice versa...

I might slip a gift card in a card and whoever the lucky mailman is that day will get it!

Hubby or I are at the post office almost daily and have been for years because we sell on eBay. If you bring homemade cookies (at least at our post office) they will thank you, and toss them. They have no idea how they were made. We get cookies made and sealed at a local bakery and give homemade card sets with matching pens (insert has their names - about 10 people work there). I bought a rum cake while on a cruise last week for our local mailman that actually delivers. I no longer give to our trash collectors, because it's seldom the same people from week to week.

We give our excellent mail lady a box of chocolates that she mentioned to me once she especially liked (my DD came to the door with me to sign for a package with a Ghirardelli in her hand and she said it in passing).

I know many accept cash, however, our mail lady knows my DH is a postal worker (not a carrier) and therefore knows that cash tips are a big no no.

As far as their benefits...if they are full time permanent, they have terrific benefits (I know, we have them and the carriers do a little better in that department). If they are seasonal or temp or part time fill in carriers, they don't have such great benefits. :)

My Dad was a mailman for many years, and every Christmas season he would bring home lots and lots of candy, cookies, chocolates, etc. It was awesome! I remember we always looked forward to one lady's homemade cookies. They were cut out with a cat-shaped cookie cutter.:goodvibes

We don't tip our mailman. Heck, we never see the mailman!!!!

My parents were telling me today that they got a Christmas card from their mailman and in it he wrote "Any gratuity would be appreciated".

He wouldn't be getting one from me, especially if he asked for it.

That note from him could land him in some serious trouble! He definitely shouldn't be asking for any kind of tip.

As a window clerk we occasionally receive little gifts usually of candy from some of our customers, but it is never over say $10 and if its cookies or candy, and if the other clerk likes it I try to leave it out for any of us to share. Now the past couple of years one customer would give us this huge box of cookies that I could never eat alone, and the guy who I worked with didn't want them, so I would give them to my Mom and she would share them with her Sunday School class.;)

My sister in law is a mail carrier and every year she complains about the "cheap people who give candy and chocolates and other crap for her to lug around." She only appreciates cash.

I used to give my mailman a box of chocolates but after she said that I don't bother anymore because she told me they all feel the same way. (I know she really doesn't speak for anyone but herself, but it turned me off anyway).

But, no way am I tipping cash to a government employee. We give the mailman a Christmas card, that's it.

Thats what all the teachers I know do also-they all said they thank the child and tell them that they are their favorite kind but at the end of the day they all go in the garbage since they don't know how clean the kitchens or the people that made them are at home. I never send in anything homemade to the teachers.
