How long should it take to mail from Kansas to Virginia?

Upwards of a week, maybe longer, very slow, everybody who handles it HAS to sign. If it has no monetary value, certifed accomplishes the same, is faster and less expensive.

I usually just do certified for "important" things. However, a month or so ago I mailed our AP vouchers to Disney certified mail for a refund and I got the certified card back WITHOUT a signature! Everything was fine, but I'm not sure how good the certified card would have been w/o a signature.

Unfortunately, sometimes those dratted return receipts come off in the mail. That's why I try to tape the ends of those that come across my counter at work. Though, someone was really unobservant on the other end. Even if it has come off, the clerk is supposed to just fill out another for you and return it. Probably some ditsy carrier!:)
Also, there is one important difference between the registered and ceritified. If you have very important jewelry or stocks or bonds you may want to spring for the more expensive service since it does go under lock and key while traveling. Well worth it if it is a very pricey item.:)

Oh, and about three to five days for the original poster....if there isn't a weekend or holiday involved.:)

At work we got a envelope with a "return reciept" still attached. The mail man didn't even have us sign for the item.

That's one of the really bad thing about barcoding letters. Some of the certifieds slip through and the carrier may or may not see them before delivery. Unfortunately, management won't let the carriers go through the barcoded mail before they hit the street, and sometimes they don't catch them. Especially if the certified slip isn't across the top of the letter. The little green slip is 'supposed' to tip them off if they look down on the mail, but that doesn't always happen!:( I catch my customers all the time putting the slip just anywhere and of course some just don't care. And, if they've been lucky that all of theirs have been caught so far, well they just think I'm the nutsy one. It's not until they don't get one back that the message gets through.
Oh well....:)

This is true, many of our certifieds come in our presorted DPS mail, and we do not see them until we are out on the street, therefore we are not signing for these items. In the morning, we sign for registered mail by item #, we only sign for certifieds by how many, ie. 4 certifieds, 3 returns. so if you sign for 4, and have 4 more in your dps, well you are not accountable for those, but of course we are supposed to handle them in the same way, and I certainly always do. But I have had subs just leave them in someones mailbox. I have never heard of a carrier getting in trouble for "losing" a certified, I guess being we are not signing for them by item #, it would be hard to prove. Reggies, on the other hand...losing those would be a huge deal. I have had a couple carrier friends who have spent a sleepless night over a lost reggie, fortunately, they turned up the next day.;)
