Magnet Question

I feel so outta the loop these days as I've not been around much since November! I see lots of new 'faces' and new disigns which is great!

So, my big fat dumb question for those of you who make/made magnets is....do you laminate your disigns then apply the magnet tape or are you just applying the magnet once you've printed them out on photo paper. The reason I'm questioning is I have printed out over 100 actual photos for an upcoming cruise that we're going on in 3 weeks, have laminated the photos with my xyron and have found that even Gorilla Glue doesn't hold the magnets in place. Should I not be laminating the photos and just apply the magnets or what am I NOT doing??

We are going on a Hogs on The High Seas cruise out of Los Angeles and wanted to be different, so I have photos of each couple (there are 6) that we are wanting to put on our cabin doors. Thought this would be a simple and easy idea, but am finding it's not working. Anyone have any ideas?? I couldn't find any answers on 'our' board and the magnet thread on the cruise board is too much to plow through right now.

Welcome back to Michelle and I see that Kari popped in for a hot minute!!

Thanks for any help! I've missed you all!!:goodvibes

I laminate mine and i don't recall any issues with the magnets. I just grab which ever adhesive is closer in my scrap room. The magnets I am using are actually those I "collect" from home shows, trade shows, etc. Anytime I see free magnets I grab them to be glued on the back of something.

Welcome Back Sue

I've heard that some people are printing them off on magnetic paper that you can buy . I've started making a few cruise door DISigns so maybe someone who post there might know,,some people have posted pics of there doors.

I'm also wondering if the magnetic tape in rolls that you cut would work? We can buy it here at the dollar store and at Michaels--not sure if any of this helps but thought I's try.
Anyhow nice to see you and hugs Mel

Here's a little sign for you

I usually print the pictures on photo paper and lamenate them never had a problem with the magnets not sticking. You could try magnetic paper as Mel suggested- any crafy store carries it.

I suspect the laminate is too smooth for the glue(s) to adhere. Try roughing up the back with extra fine sandpaper or steel wool before gluing.

I have a xyron and I used the magnet/laminate cartridge. I had trouble finding it in the stores anymore so I ordered it from Joann.com. It was perfect! Laminate one side, and solid magnet on the other. :thumbsup2

Good luck! I love making the magnets!

Thank you all for the ideas!

Dom~ you hit the nail on the head. I guess I was just needing a fresh pair of eyes for something that I knew was relatively simple. Got the sandpaper out, slapped a little Gorilla Glue on the sticky side of the magnet and put them on the back of the photo. Worked like a charm...

Thanks Mel for the bon voyage! One more to print out!

I had thought about doing the xyron laminate/magnet thing, but with over 100 photos to do, it was more cost effective to just buy the roll of magnet tape and laminate them with the xyron. My friends who are 'not crafty' could not grasp the concept of what I was doing, so they elected me to do them all...I tried to tell them it's not rocket science, but you know how that goes...

I've got a few more larger door magnets to do with a pirate motif, hopefully I will have time to post them before we leave.

Thank you all once again...this is why I love this board.

I was hoping using a hot glue gun would work to stick the magnets to the laminate. I bought business card magnets and was going to cut them. I hope it works. Anybody try it?
