Eric (CleveRocks) already posted a good response. I was in the process of writing this before he posted, when I was interupted. So I'll post my reply anyway.
Nope. It's easier and more convenient than that!
Yes, you attach the yellow tags before you check your bags at your home airport. You can do so at home before you leave for the airport.
But once you arrive at Orlando International, skip baggage claim and go straight to the DME check-in, as shown on the map in your DME booklet. Disney will take control of your bags "behind the scenes," before they ever go to baggage claim. It doesn't matter what airline you're flying in on.
When you get to your resort, check in for your room. Then go out and have fun -- go to a park, or the pool, or a restaurant. Usually, within three hours of your room check-in, your bags are delivered to your room. They should be waiting for you when you return.
You should take a carry-on onto the airplane, onto the DME coach, and to your room with a change of clothes and perhaps swimwear, as well as any valuables, medication, fragile items and anything else for the first day (especially in case the airline delays your luggage).
The DME service does not include bell service assistance on your check-out day. So, if you get help with your bags on your check-out day, a tip is appropriate.
An envelope will be put on your room's door handle or under the door on the day before you check out. It will have your pick-up time and instructions.
OK, I apologize for very briefly hijaking this thread. I'm leaving in a couple of hours and I've never used ME before. If I understand correctly, I put the yellow tags on before I fly out. Then, when I arrive in Orlando, we claim our bags and take them to the ME counter at the airport. On the way back, I can't do this because we're flying Southwest and they are not a participating airline.

If the DME driver assists you with your bags, a tip is appropriate. Larger carry-ons, as well as bags you will check for your trip home, go into the DME motorcoach's luggage hold.1. Assuming I do not use the services of a skycap, is there anyone in this process I need to tip and how much?

2. On the return trip, will they tell me what time they're picking me up from the resort, or do I need to call and arrange a time?
