What sort of time do they pick you up to take you back to the airport for the return flight (VS016)?

Four hours - give or take.

They tell you it will be four hours, but we have never been the first resort to be collected and it is more in the region of 3 1/2 but I would imagine if your resort was the first stop you would be collected pretty close to the four hour mark.

They say 4 to allow you to get to the airport 3 hours before check in, but we have arrived at MCO with a little over 2 hours before and it was fine.

I will probably use the Downtown Disney check in anyway so just wondered how much time I would have before getting picked up to be taken to the airport

Our return flight leaves at 6:00 pm. Is it possible to check out of the resort, check our bags with DME, get our boarding passes and go to a park for part of the day? I'm assuming that the DME doesn't pick up at the parks, so we would just need to get back to our resort for pick up, right?

You would have to be back at your resort for the pick up, but yes you can then go to the parks, you will be given your pick up time the day before you leave.

You will check your bags into Luggage Services. You need to collect them again before you go to wait for DME so just remember to allow time for that too when you work out when to leave the parks.

We were picked up at 3pm and our flight left at 6:45pm and we got up early that day left our bags at the resort luggage area and managed to get Epcot, MK and DTD in before our pick. We only had 15mins once we got back to the resort to get and get to the bus. That to be honest was cutting it fine and I would have liked half an hour at least because we also choose to change before we got on the flight.

Once we got to the airport we had enough time to get to the shops and have a quick bit to eat before heading through security.
