Magical Express fears

First, a big "THANKS" to Tyler for adding factual info to the discussion. It's always nice to hear what's really supposed to happen.

That being said, however, I remain somewhat sceptical as to how it will actually happen; what's that quote: "No plan of battle survives contact with the enemy"....

I've experienced this type of situation in the past at Las Vegas, where many, many tour agencies offer "transportation to your hotel for you and your luggage", complete with shuttle buses that only stop at a few hotels, and 'special luggage tags' so you don't even have to pick up your bags at the carosel. And some of my experiences have been quite dreadful. The extreme - which only happened once - is luggage didn't make it to Las Vegas until the next day. More typical were long waits for the shuttle to leave the airport and even longer waits to actually get to your hotel.

A few comments on Tyler's description:

1. Disney knows who's arriving, when they will arrive and what hotel they're going to, so they can minimize the wait for buses to depart. Well, that will work fine - as long as there are never any delayed flights, no one is ever bumped to a later flight, and everyone checks in with DME very promptly. I'm not usually a cynic, but all it's going to take is a few flights arriving at inopertune times - along with someone stopping at the bar for 25 minutes after arrival but before checking in - to gum things up really good.

2. I suggest that Horace is going to be disappointed - I'll bet that more people with have carry-ons, and bigger ones at that. For some people, it can be up to 6 hours from the time the arrive at their home airport until they would normally get their luggage - they have a lot of things they need/want for that time. Add in the fact that they might not get their luggage until 3 or 4 (or more) hours after that, they may well pack even more, to tide them over until the bags do arrive (note: cruises recommend that you carry-on everything you'll need for your first evening at sea for this very reason).

3. Even if they keep the 3 or 4 hotel per route limits (which I doubt, as I feel that doing so will result in a lot of half-empty buses - or longer airport waits), if you're staying at the last hotel on the list, you've got a wait. Even if it's only 10 minutes from resort to resort, and 10 minutes to unload all the people and all their under-the-bus luggage at each resort, if you're number 4, you've just added an hour on to your wait, in addition to the drive from the airport to WDW property, and any wait at the airport.

4. Don't even get me started on how early you need to have your luggage out for the return trip; how early you need to be waiting for the shuttle, and how nerve-wracking it is when that shuttle doesn't show up.

Please, PLEASE don't get me wrong - I really hope this works out! It'd be a great perk for WDW guests, and probably save a lot of folks some $$$ (although I suspect that Disney feel otherwise :rolleyes1 ). We always rent a car, and always will, so I have no axe to grind. I just feel that buses are a problematic mode of transportation - and I always love to ride the WDW Transportation buses, even though we have a car (the drivers are almost always a positive bonus part of the fun!). I can remember when WDW buses had time schedules, published on the maps (yep, I was at the TTC, looking for the bus with the flag of the red cross on the gold field ;)); regular schedules work pretty good. But since DME is on-demand, I think that it's going to be, hmmmm, an interesting roll-out. As they say, time will tell - that's why I agree with CarolA: give it a few weeks and see what the reviews say. But CarolA, what fun is it if we can't play 'What If?' about Disney? :rotfl2:

I doubt Disney will hold the bus for a stragler. They'll know about how many people to expect. The stragler will just have to wait 10-30 minutes for the next bus.

Your second observation is probably correct. People may panic and take more carryon luggage. If the carryon's are large enough to be stored under the bus the unloading time might take 5 minutes. Ten minutes is probably pushing it. People are assuming a bus of 40-50; 3-4 stops and 3-4 people per family. In other words 4-7 famlies per stop. Shouldn't take 10 minutes to get than number of people out of the bus or to even take a dozen bags out from under the bus.

It won't take 10 minutes to go from resort to resort. The 3 All Star resorts will be on one bus. How long does it take to go from one to another? How long does it take to go from the POLY to the GF? From the BC to the YC?

I AGREE IT might not run as smooth as people are predicting, but for many people the price is right. Worse case scenario it shouldn't take much more than an hour. Assume a 15 minute wait for a bus, 30 minute ride to the first resort and 15 minutes until the last resort is unloaded.

Now if the buses are also loading guests for the return to MCO and the luggage for the airlines not participating in ME has to be loaded under the bus my time assumptions may be off.

I agree that we are all worrying a bit too much about this. The exception being those using DME during the first 30 days or so - I'd be a little nervous myself.

BIG FAVOR: Those using DME in May and June please let us know about your experience. I am going in July and would appreciate your thoughts!

BAGS Inc. is the baggage check in company and ARINC actually transports the luggage in their trucks between the airport and the resorts.

TYLER - GREAT INFO! One last question - a CM said no carseats available, so I assume parents just hold onto their kids younger than 4 (or whatever the seat belt law is in FLA)? :confused3
thanks :cheer2:

Seatbelts or carseats are not required on motorcoaches. I'd recommend younger ones sitting a few rows back, though.

My sister and I both live in different states...We are thinking about going to Disney in May...around the 11th...The way things look...if we purchase the flights offerred...one of us will be arriving two hours ahead of the other....In the past...we have always waited for the other one at the airport. How would this work using Magical Express? Could I, for instance, wait two hours at the airport for my sister ...and would my luggage go on to Pop Century? What could happen? :rotfl:

Just a curiousity question that you may or may not know Tyler.

If we are checking luggage on the return at the hotel why is does ME pickup 2hr 45min prior? The 2 hr airport rule is for people checking luggage its usually half that when you are just going through security.

Also if I checked my luggage in at the hotel (since I'm flying Delta) but then got to the airport via other means (ie towncar or rental) because I don't want to get the airport that early? what would happen to my luggage? I ask because with the cruise I can still check my luggage at the pier even if I don't take the Disney bus back.

The reason being is that Orlando International Airport along with the airlines wants passengers to arrive to the terminals early, regardless of checking luggage or boarding passes.

If you only get to the airport an hour prior to departure, and there is a holdup in the TSA checkpoint, you could potentially miss your flight. Then, it becomes Disney's fault. That's not something they want.

As for the towncar situation... don't know about that.

Im sure you could... not sure how that might work, though.

Are the Swan and the Dolphin included in DME?

No, Swan, Dolphin, Shades of Green are not Disney owned resorts, and are not included in the DME service.

I don't know about anyone else but I know I have more time than $! I think ME is going to be great. Esp. to save the headache of waiting for your luggage (an hour the last time we went!) and then fighting to get out of the garage (if you rent a car) and sitting in traffic. AND you never know who you are going to meet on the bus! So just RELAX and ENJOY!!! (That is what vacations are for isn't it? :sunny: )

Thanks so much Brian for that info! Not sure if its worth paying for transportation just to get one exit hour on the last day of the trip but its good to know its an option. I must admit I gamble and try to stretch out the trip as long as possible.

We are really excited about this new feature. I feel good to be a Disney captive. They do a really good job on the cruise and nothing goes 100%, 100% of the time but I know they will do the absolute best they can. There are far too many things to worry about than a temporarily lost bag. I wonder if the tags will be color coded by resort to help identify them. Does anyone know when the tags will be mailed? Do the bags get checked in when we leave and then picked up at home or how does the return work? We are on Delta/Song so I know they are included.

I was told about this when making our June reservation and I have to say, I was shocked to hear that the transfer was free. I kept asking the CM over and over free? free? It's free? When I asked her to explain the process to me, she made it sound like it was the simplest thing in the world.

Anyway, I have some qualms about it and may or may not use it. I do know that the baggage tag is connected electronically to your reservation, so there is little chance that it will end up at the wrong place. As to when it will end up there, we'll see. I love to take all my luggage on the plane with me generally.

I also don't know how this is going to work round trip since we are coming in to one resort for just the weekend and leaving to go back home from a different one (our Sunday-Thursday resort). The CM was perplexed when I asked her this question. I think we may try the service from MCO to the resorts, but I am hesitant to try it going back until more reports on it are out. I wonder if there is any confusion with split stays like that?

oh--This was a question I posted on the transportation board...very important!

If the bags are supposed to end up in your room and are tied to your reservation, does that mean that they are tied to a particular room assigned to you? I just thought of this because often when I am assigned a room at check-in, I may make a request to see if a different location is available.

Does anyone think that a room request would complicate the whole baggage delivery or that delivery of your bags is already pre-assigned as your room is? Just a thought.

:teeth: :teeth: :teeth: My thoughts exactly...I can't wait for the experience

I can only imagine (from a logistics standpoint) that once bags are taken from the carousel and loaded onto buses destined for each resort, the tags on each bag play an important role in getting A particular bag to A particular hotel. Once bags arrive at the hotels, I would certainly think that bell services would assume the job of identifying the rooms where bags will be delivered. If a guest has checked in and upgraded, then it would certainly give the bellmen that information when they scan the luggage tag. If a guest has yet to check-in, then I have no doubt bell services would store the bags until your party has checked in. Seems pretty basic to me... Disney sends luggage tags before you arrrive, you place on your bags, once in MCO they pull disney-tagged bags out of the regular luggage riff raff :rotfl: and the bar code on the tag tells them which resort... once at the resort... the reservation number on the tag tells them which room...

carry on...
