Do you have to specifically ask the CM photographers is they do Magic Shots? or do they just automatically do them?

We've never had a photo pass photographer offer. But if we do ask and they know one then they all seemed very willing to do one.

A magic shot is a pic that when you view it will have a character enhancement, like holding Tink in your hand or pointing and laughing at Stitch

A magic shot is where the photographer enhances a photo by superimposing an image on top of the photo. For example, one shot is where you hold your hand out flat. They'll photograph you making this pose and will superimpose Tinker Bell sitting in your hand.

Some photopass photographers will ask you to strike a certain pose. That's often when they're creating a magic shot. However, on our trip we just got back from we didn't have many ask us to do magic shots. I knew I wanted them, so to play it safe I started asking them to do it. The photographers that do NOT have a tripod are the ones that can do a magic shot.

We were at Epcot June 24 waiting in line to have our picture down in front of spaceship earth. The photographer suggested a magic shot for the family in front of us. When it was our turn he just did the standard pose, no suggestion. I asked and he obliged and it was to be the tink one. Later when we checked he didn't put tink on :(

You can call Disney and they will change that for you.

Understand not all Photopass photogs can do Magic Shots. Some Magic shots are limited to a Park or even a location in a park.

here is a good gallery of shots that have been available.

Ask, but there is something about their place or rigging that allows them to do it.

I've been told only the ones that have hand held cameras is it even an option (the tripods can't do it.)

We have had the most done at DHS - we have two different Stitch ones, one sitting on a bench holding a bunch of balloons, one pointing in fear at Tower of Terror, one holding baby Simba, and the Tinkerbell one.

I feel like when they were first available they were more abundant. Or maybe my kids were younger and just that much cuter. Lol. We used to be offered them a lot more. We know to ask and we stalk the ones we want. I love the balloon one and this year will stalk Olaf.

When I first read this, I immediately thought of the shots they used to walk around Pleasure Island with, and thought for a split second that they were making a come back! LOL

Is this anything to do with Memory Maker?

See my above post with examples. Yes, and no.

Yes I'm sure you can get the shots on your MM.
No, nothing really to do with MM specifically, they are special posed shots with some "detail" Photoshop'd into your picture.

In January we were told that the Soarin' magic shot and all the magic shots on benches were discontinued. We did get a magic shot with Chip and Sebastian though in the New Fantasyland.

We were in WDW 2 weeks ago, and we had magic shots done aprox 10 times. The Photopass photographer never offered, we always had to ask! :) But like other posters have said, they were happy to do it once we asked. We got Tink on Mainstreet, Chip and Sebastian in New fantasy land. Mickey balloons behind cinderella castle, And Stitch coming out of the sidewalk and sitting on one stone wall near Tower of Terror in HWS.

I've always heard the business about the tripod (no magic shots if the photographer has a tripod), but that's not always true. For instance, our MNSSHP "hitchhiking ghosts" magic shot used a tripod. We've also had photographers take their cameras of the tripod to do a magic shot, both in AK (with the Simba shot) and in MK (with the Tinkerbell shot). Maybe we just got really nice photographers, though.
