We have a 12 year old son with special needs and I am certain that there is no chance he will keep the magic band on, he would most likely eat it within the first few hours at the park. Is this something we can keep on his wheelchair or maybe even put on his leg? Is it something we can just keep in his backpack and pull out when needed or will he need to have it on his person?

He doesn't have to wear it. All of the above would work or you could even wear it for him.

Some parents simply keep it on their other arm so they can scan it easily

My husband wore mine the entire trip in July and never once did a cast member even blink :upsidedow

He doesn't need to wear it, someone else could wear it for him.

Wherever you put it, keep in mind that you will need it at times to be able to scan on a reader that is mounted at a convenient height to use with it on a wrist.
So, whatever place you put it in needs to be able to place it close enough to that to be read.
You can put it into a backpack, but that might mean a lot of taking it in and out.
I would not leave it in his wheelchair or attached to a backpack because it would be hard to use from there, but more importantly, someone could remove it if you leave those things during a ride.
Even if he doesn't have charging privileges on his Magicband, it still has his tickets linked to it.

My husband wore our son's most of the trip in June. The only time we had a problem was when I actually wore it because my husband had to run back to the van. Thankfully the cast member remembered us from earlier in the day.

I had them on the lanyard that used to hold the paper passes, but that got annoying.

I bought a key chain that clips onto your belt, that has the pull-out cord and put the magic bands on key rings (the type that screw open and closed) and clipped them to the key chain. Each MB was on a separate ring, so if anyone wanted to go do something without me, they could take their ring and go.

I don't like wearing jewelry so I simply keep it in my purse til needed which was only when i had to purchase something or access fast pass.

We are here now. DS also refuses to wear...or a lanyard. As others have said, I wouldn't suggest having in the wheelchair. I've had DS's either on my arm along with mine (both on same arm), or on my purse strap. I've even had them both on the purse strap when mine got annoying. Pretty much anywhere you can get to them easily and not lose then.
