Magic Bands and DVC

Just got back from the world and it was an awesome trip. One thing that happened just annoyed me. I went to make a purchase with my magic band when the cashier asked me if I was a DVC member or a Disney Visa Card holder. I responded with yes I am both. At which point she asked me to show her the card. Well part of the perks of the magic band is having everything linked so I didn't have to carry my wallet anywhere. All that information should be linked to the band. Unfortunately it isn't.

Same thing happened to me. Fortunately I had a very nice CM who took my word for it and gave me the discount, but I agree with you kevinday, that's a great idea. It would be very helpful if that info were linked to the MB.

I have commented on this a few times, this is a pretty big oversight on the part of Disney.

There is no reason your DVC membership and TIW or AP status shouldn't be linked to your Magic band for discount purposes.

The pessimist in me likes to think Disney has done this on purpose, if people are missing out on discounts, Disney is making more money afterall.

Heck they could even link a piece of government ID, attached to your finger print (since you have to link that to your ticket anyway) so you wouldn't need to carry ID in the parks. !

No, they couldn't. The band does not meet the definition of a photo ID under Florida law. There are no finger print readers at any point of sale. And bands can be passed around to other people.

It is for exactly this reason that I still wear a lanyard with a cardholder on it. Back-to-back, it has my DVC card and my driver's license in it. I use the MB to charge, show the DVC to the cashier, then flip to the license. It's easy, and they know it's me using my discount, not someone I've just handed my MB off to. I've had several CMs who really appreciated this simple system.

HYPOTHETICALLY AS AN EXAMPLE:

I rent a two bedroom villa. I go on a trip with my brother & sister-in-law, as well as my cousin and her husband. We set up the MagicBands so everyone's fees are going to the same card because we will charging a lot of joint meals and feel it's easier to divvy out the costs at the end from one statement. DH and I come down with a stomach bug, and the other four decide to go to Downtown Disney for the day. "Here, I say, since we're just going to be lying here in bed, take my magic band, it has my DVC member card linked to it."

And this is one reason why they don't do that.

"In fact, I have three magic bands because we did a split stay this trip. Take one for each of you, then you won't have to worry about staying together to get the discount while you're shopping."

That's another reason why they don't do that. Note that that one works even if I'm not in bed with the stomach flu.

Yes, you say, but then they could just ask me to show a photo ID and that problem would be solved. Well, if you're carrying a photo ID, then whatever you're carrying it in likely has space for your card as well.

I would also never go without a wallet...you definitely at least need some other form of payment because there have been several times when charging to the MB hasn't worked for one reason or another.

This is what I do too. Even if they did link the DVC info to your band, the purchase always requires a photo ID, so you'd still have to carry that. I also stuff some extra gift cards in my lanyard in case the room charge fails.

Yes, unfortunately is did not totally eliminate the need to carry any cards with you.

Yep, if you want a discount or a special perk you have to carry your card. Also TIW and AAA. You will need photo ID to redeem discounts, too.

This may be why, because under Florida law the scan of a magic band cannot be considered a sufficient check of an ID. For anything that requires a photo ID, they need to see the actual ID.

personally I would not ever go anywhere with just the magic band. Yep, still carrying the wallet.

What I do not get is all the people going to the parks without any identification. There are all kinds of situations where an identification could be needed that could pop up. In fact, I rarely go anywhere with out my license and medical card for this reason. Even if they are just in the room, what if someone is not available to go and get them.

There are "too many" unforeseen circumstances that pop up in life.:scared1:. I carry the extra "stuff" "just in case".

Absolutely. I would never go anywhere (including to a Disney park) without an official picture ID, medical insurance card, and some type of payment card (debit or credit card).

Same, wallet and phone always. I'll toss them in our day bag with the snacks and such. Not so much for payment and discounts, but for emergencies. The MB is excellent for streamlining your park experience, but it can't replace necessary things like identification/insurance.

And a small amount of cash!

We always carry our DVC ID and credit cards and some cash. We have had room charging go down while at Disney, also most discount locations don't ask if you qualify for a discount.

It didn't eliminate it *at all*.

AP and/or DVC cards for discounts.
ID to prove it's me for those discounts, or for getting into the park, or at the ER if I've injured myself, or in case of being carded.
Insurance card in case I end up at the ER. Hospitals aren't supposed to be a pain about it, but they sure as heck are!
CC for "just in case" or if I haven't set up room charging.
Cash for "just in case".

I'm carrying the exact same items AND I'm wearing or carrying my MB (maybe).
