"Magic Bands" aka "Tacky Bands"

I picked a green magicband but others in my family chose to go with the grey one that I've heard people in other threads refer to as the basic simple grey one they give you if you don't make a choice. They actually prefer the grey one,it goes with everything.Kinda like looking at those bright yellow sneakers at the store, they look good there but when you try and find an outfit to go with them you realize you don't have many options and wearing them with some other outfits just don't look right. For me it's not that big a deal, they're bracelets,it's not as big a deal if they don't match your outfit, crazy colored shoes sure but not a tiny bracelet on your wrist but some people out there are fashionistas and it's a bigger deal to them.I like the bands,I like not having to take out your pass to enter the parks or your room but I'll never link a credit card to them.

I appreciate your understanding even with a different perspective. I truly didn't realize what I was saying about the bands would be taken by many as an insult against them.
I realize now that it had that effect and I am sorry to have said anything at all. I didn't mean to make people think that if they like the bands that I think they are tacky people. I wasn't thinking that way at all. I actually tend to think other people pull off looks so much better than I do that I'm probably overly cautious about my own outfits.

Meh, it's WDW, home of the crocs. Fashion a priority?

I have to love this picture. Thanks for the sense of humor. :thumbsup2

No one would ever accuse me of being terribly concerned about things coordinating but personally I do find everyone running around the parks with the bands a bit absurd. Not really in an individual way but just in a masses way. Mine usually stayed in a bag and I took it out just like I would an card. I unfortunately got a picture in my head of some Disney execs looking at pictures and getting some chuckles out of what they are getting us all to wear and I can't get rid of that image.

Oh - and the mention of pictures. They really stand out in those in an individual sort of way that I didn't like. :(

I didn't mind the Magic Band, except for one day where I had a texture related meltdown (if you have sensory sensitive children, you will know the kind of meltdown I mean). However, I do wish the accessories for it included a fricking digital watch. I'd have bought a dozen of those.

I havent worn a watch in years, but I kept looking at the darn thing for the time!

No harm, no foul! You don't have to like them. Probably, people responded to the word tacky and took it personally. I saw nothing in your post that was insulting to an individual.

I do however like the bands and don't think they fit the vibe of Disney like the ear hats do.

I didn't take your original post that way at all. When I'm at Disney, I'm herding four kids, so I just hope I'm not a candidate for What Not To Wear. And I wear a fitbit most days, so I don't really notice the MB. Will you be carrying a purse? You don't have to wear it all the time, just carry it and use it for entering the park, purchases, and FP+. You could just pop it in your bag. I admit, my big fear was getting a nasty tan line from mine. But it was in the 50s and 60s for our trip, so a tan wasn't really in the cards.

We managed a 9 day trip with our bands, and they matched our clothes every day. I was concerned that DD's choice of yellow would not be ideal, but as it turned out, every shirt I bought for the trip (before she chose her band) had yellow on it somewhere. It really wasn't a big deal. I think they are cute, and the convenience of the band trumps any appearance, but for us, they were perfect in every way.

Thanks! I have two kids (DD7 and DD who turned 13 today!)

I carry a small digital video camera bag only. I could tuck the bands in there. I am still hoping the card option will become available as they are smaller and easier to tuck.

I personally am excited to wear them on our trip in 9 days w/ our families matching homemade disney shirts! People stare at us because of the shirts but 99% of people make a comment on how cute we are! Tacky or not - I love it!!!! It is disney after all!!
Makes packing easy too!

I don't understand why it is absurd. The rest of the year I would choose jewelry to coordinate my outfits. You can have an awesome Disney vacay and still care about your clothing and accessories.

I get lots of people consider it part of the Disney experience but I just have never liked wearing things like that. I didn't realize that made me an absurdity to be laughed at.

I thought we were going to have a choice of a card. Now, it seems that choice is gone.

I would advise you to relax....a lot. :hippie:

You can't possibly make them work with all your outfits.

It just never occurred to me that this is something I need to be concerned about. I go to Disney to enjoy myself, not make a fashion statement.

I understand wanting to look good and match, but I don't see a problem with a MB because you can just take it off. Put it in you pocket, camera bag, backpack or wherever you use to carry the cards. I think calling them tacky was unnecessary.

I painted mine sparkly red - I did think about how it would look when I was picking colors. I just decided to go to the opposite extreme and make it stand out even more since it won't match.

You could always paint it white, gold, silver, or black, or get the gray and have better chance of it matching more outfits. You could also buy the band wraps once you get there and try to coordinate those to your outfits. Or as others have said, you don't have to wear it all the time.

It's a band that lets you get around. Inhale the pixie dust and relax.

Or, grab some paint or polish and have a sense of humor. I went with a Rocky Horror theme. :rotfl2:

I decorated our bands and love how they look. I ordered orange and planned to do Tigger stripes but ended up painting it purple and adding lots of bling.
While I think they look great, I probably won't wear mine much. I have sensory issues and even the few minutes I wore it at home made me crazy. The only jewelry I wear (for more than an evening out) is a gold bracelet dh gave me before we were married. Even my wedding band is too much for me.

I'm sorry but the longer the "magic bands" are floating around the tackier and cheaper they are looking to me. They are just ugly. How can one want to wear one of those every day? You can't possibly make them work with all your outfits.

No worries! You have a right to your opinion and if you think they look tacky then you are entitled to feel that way. You never made it sound like the people wearing the bands are tacky. :confused3 I had to laugh when I read your comment about making them work with all outfits because I have a very fashion conscious friend that would hate that she couldn't coordinate her band to her outfit.

So why would you come here just to complain about PLASTIC WRIST BANDS THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO WEAR???

Really? It's a board for people who like Walt Disney World, or want information for improving their touring of Walt Disney World. Why would you even come here to post such drivel? No neighbor hood puppies to kick?

Just wanted to let you know you are not alone. I thought the same.

Would have preferred a black band option as I tend to wear a lot of black and also think it would have gone with more outfits.

Knowing a lot of the photos we take at WDW will be our family photos for the year, I like the way we look in similar colors versus anything goes.

We haven't talked about MB colors yet so I don't know where we'll end up, but yes the plain "boring" grey one might be the way to go and I may end up decorating to my taste.

I hate them too OP. I'm not a fan on wearing anything on my wrist and the band annoys me, especially the "hard part" in the middle. And I hate how they look in pictures. When we were there in October I thought I'd just carry it in my purse, and I did along with my kids' two bands which they were constantly taking on and off and I ended up losing mine pretty soon into the trip and got stuck with an ugly grey one. Constantly taking them in and out of my purse, trying to find the right one, etc ended up being more of a pain than just wearing the stupid thing. Add to that having to still carry our back up room cards (not sure if that's still true), our APs (for discounts, now on plastic instead of the much thinner tyvek), our Tables in Wonderland card and one credit card and my driver's license and my vacation wallet went from being super thin to bigger than the wallet I carry everyday! I was not happy having to carry 3 MBs, 3 room cards and 3 APs (DH carried his own, but I carried my kids' since they are too young to carry their own), what a pain!
