Magic band can be used without pin

I just got back and specifically asked not to be linked to a credit card to my magic band. I paid for my daughter and her husbands vacation and they did the same.
They had a fast pass to BOG and were asked for magic band and automatically charged my card. They were NOT asked for a pin number and when I went to guest services was told it could not happen, it did.
Not really anything I could do at that point, but just concern that if you lose your band make sure you get it all turned off immediately. This is why I did not have it linked in the first place.
I should have checked at my first purchase to see if it was linked,just a thought.

If there was no CC attached to your account or theirs, what did they charge the meal to?? Did they link your CC despite you saying not to? When it came time to pay for their meal at BOG they handed over their bands? Why would your DH and DD do that?

She said they had fastpasses for lunch, so they had to show their bands. I think what she is saying is they showed them for fp, and they automatically charged the meal to them too.

This doesn't make since. You don't even pay at the FP+ check in desk, you pay at the kiosk inside. Are you sure DH didn't swipe his card at the kiosk where he ordered (after checking in) and forgot about it. They couldn't charge your band at the check in desk because you haven't ordered yet.

I think maybe OP did have a credit card attached but maybe wasn't aware?

Although I will say that I never attach a CC to my room. Yet when I added days to my ticket (on a trip prior to Magicbands) they charged my card. When I asked what card, they said it was the card I had used booking our package. So who knows......

This doesn't make any sense. When you have a BOG FP then you have either preordered which will charge to the card you set it up with (possibly this card that got charged) or you order upon arrival so then you pick how to pay.

Nothing odd happened here other than either the OP not realizing she was on hook for the meal preordered or the 'kids' trying to pull a fast one since if there was no card attached to the band, how did they expect to get their meal?

At lunch, don't you pay upon check in as it's semi counter service? You order before you sit down and then a CM bring you your meal.

They were not asked for a credit card and just expected to pay when they got to the restaurant. Really not a thought because we weren't on the dining plan and always pay with our card at the restaurant. Have always done this.
They had to use their magic band for the fast pass and Disney for some reason chose to use my credit card that I used for the package.
My kids, who are mid 20s were mortified and asked to pay themselves, but it was something that the server didn't seem to know how to do. They let me know immediately and not a problem, but I just wanted to make the point that a pin number was NEVER used.
When I spoke to Disney they said it could not happen, well it did and just wanted to let people know.
Just something to keep in the back of your mind, not everyone uses a card in the parks, but will with a reservation.

I'm sorry that happened. But yes, Disney does keep credit card numbers on file, even though you may think you don't have a number attached to your band.

When I went to BOG on a FP for lunch, the outside CM at the kiosk did not scan my MB but looked me up in the computer by name.

But, when you order your food at the "counter", the take payment right then and there and then scan your MB so that the food can find your table by the RFID in the band. Those who do not have magic bands get a little rose shaped sensor to put on their table instead.

My point is, even though we paid cash, we had to scan our bands at the cashier so the food could find us.

I don't see how someone could not notice that this would be the time to pay cash, though. I recall the cashier asking me if we were on the dining plan and then waiting patiently for my payment.

Still odd. The card you used to book your trip shouldn't have been charged unless you linked it at check in or through MDE.

I think there may be a minimum dollar amount that requires a PIN. In any event, I am confused as to why, if the bands were scanned, the charge didn't just show up as a room charge. I know when we used the bands in September, we paid part of our balance with gift cards and did it all at once. Our credit cards weren't charged for each transaction; rather, it was charged in one lump sum. Now could there have been some temporary authorizations? Maybe.

Well since you used your cc when booking packages, and they got a text from Disney from the booking, and made the reservation using that link, I can see why they charged your card. The bands were simply used to check them in for the FP+ and the card was probably already on file from when they set up the reservation.

I was planning on giving him the magic band to be able to charge for food and not have to worry about carrying cash but I don't feel comfortable doing this if it is possible to charge without a PIN.

These make the most sense.

Especially because the CM was able to see what CC was being used; that doesn't happen with MBs, because it's charging the account, not the card.

This is a BOG thing. But why not just give him a giftcard instead? If you have an iphone you can get the free "disney gift card" app, someone can keep the original receipt, and if he loses the card you guys call to report it lost immediately.

It is not possible to charge on a MagicBand without a pin.
