Well, we returned home a couple of days ago from our first Disney Cruise and we're exhausted. My kids are 4 & 7 and were probably up until around midnight every night. My 7-yr-old daughter wanted to go to Karaoke every night in Studio Sea and so my 4-yr-old so would request to go back to the Oceaneer Club from 10:30 - 11:45 (no we're no irresponsible parents, everyone was just having too much fun). I'll give a quick report to my highs and lows on the cruise (BTW, we've been on a RCL and a Carnival in the past and there were 17 in our group - my husband's entire family).

Highs:
- My kids loved the kids program. The 5-7s were separated during the day and were all over the ship in organized activities (be sure to check the Navigator regularly so you're not an a wild goose chase to find them).

- I felt very comfortable with the counselors who checked the wrist bands before and after as well as our KWW cards and checked our passwords against the computer. Sometimes a long wait to check in or out because they were being very thorough and I can get more inpatient than the kids.

- Cristian, our cruise director was wonderful. Very funny, informative and while he didn't get a chance to learn all of our names he new exactly which family we were with.

- Michelle who was the head waiter during our dinner rotation went above and beyond for us. Every night, she had a grilled cheese sandwich (without crust) brought up from another kitchen (which she picked up herself on several occasions) and she would come by our tables a few times each night to check on us and shmooze for a few minutes. Our waiters Raphael and Sladjana were very friendly and took care of the kids for us. If there was a menu item that I didn't care for - a new item was on the table for me within the matter of minutes (BTW - the best lamb I've ever had!). Service wasn't the fastest but we were a big group and it was nice not feeling rushed and gave us a chance to relax after everyone's busy days.

- Disney Dreams was by far the best show. Everyone in our group enjoyed it. We also like the hypnotist and the comedian (went to both the family and adult shows for them and I was hypnotized on stage - it was fun and yes, I remember everything).

- Palo was by far the best experiences we had on the ship. We had dinner on the 3rd night, brunch, and high tea. The food was excellent but the staff was even better. We love PJ (the manager) and he even had souffles made for us to go on our last night (when we weren't dining at Palo). The waiters were very knowledgeable and friendly and made everyone feel like they were regulars at the restaurant. Don't miss the blue cheese and pear pizza or the Lobster ravioli (pass on the risotto - it wasn't the best I've had and there was so many other items that stood out.

- In terms of excursions, we booked the Dolphin Swim in Cabo through Disney. Had a great time and it was VERY organized and the group leaders made sure that everyone had a chance to participate in everything they wanted to. Pictures were very expensive ($25 a piece). Would have been nice if you got one free photo with the price we spent on the excursion. We walked around Cabo after and took the kids to Cabo Wabo Cantina - live band, good food, great drinks - we had a blast (even the kids). In Mazatlan, we booked horseback riding with Randi's Happy Horses based on several recommendations. We had a great time and she even takes kids as young as 3 which were led by their own guides. In Puerto Vallarta, we went to the Krystal Hotel on our own and had some incredible massages (very inexpensive compared to LA prices). We found out that a lot of the staff from the Magic goes to the Krystal during their time off.

As for the negatives:
- We did the Rasul in the Vista Spa and it was TOO HOT (at least 120 or more) plus a pipe had broken so we had barely enough water to rinse the mud off ourselves. Because we didn't say anything until the end of the hour, they refunded us for half of the price and gave us free rainforest passes to come back the next day which was nice.

- Room service took about an hour one day with our food so our kids had to eat on the run while we were trying to make our Palo brunch reservation (my husband suggested that I call 20 minutes earlier so it was also my fault that we were rushed)

- I didn't win the $12,600 in Bingo (but three other people slip it so that would be on their positive list not mine)

- There were a few menu items that I didn't care for either because they had cream sauce or were a little too salty. But as I mentioned earlier, Raphael insisted on bringing me another entree that suited me better (and he did catch on to my likes and dislikes). so, I guess I can't complain to much about the food. While it wasn't the highest quality, it was a million times better than the food we had on Carnival.

- And when you're at the Character Breakfast, just remember that you're there for the kids and not the food (boring and cold). we were nervous because it was our first breakfast on the Magic but the other ones definitely raised the par.

Also, someone mentioned a problem at the Mickey pool the week before. At all times, we saw two staff members at the slide (one on top and one at the bottom) and they were very careful to not let anything happen this last week (my husband leaned over to take a photo of the kids coming down and was quickly asked to move aside to keep himself safe and not encourage the younger kids to copy). I heard that there was an accident in the Mickey pool and it was closed for several hours for cleaning. Someone said that they emptied it and thoroughly cleaned it out. By the way, they should not shoot streamers over the Goofy Pool when the deck is off. It turned the water different colors and my daughter had little pieces stuck to her when she got out (she thought that it was funny).

Well, that was my brief report. Just imagine what I could write if I had more time (we were gone for a week and was busy every day).

FYI - We made t-shirts for all 17 of us before the cruise through a web site called Custom Ink. They came out awesome and everyone was asking us about them.

And thank you to everyone that posted tips on this site they came in very handy. I actually bought a magnetic locker organizer from Staples for the back of our door which helped keep our cards and sunglasses in one place.:cheer2:

I agree with you about Michelle. She had to be one of the best Head Waiters we have every had. I made sure I put her name on the survey.

I also agre with you about the Rasul. Granted we had fun:rolleyes1 but it was way to hot in the steam room.

Great report, thanks for sharing:thumbsup2.

We are on the July 27th sailing. We were wondering what time did they start the boarding process? Thanks. Alex

We were in boarding group '2', and if I remember right, it was around 11:30....give or take a few minutes. I think we were eating lunch in Parrot Cay around 12 or so. Sorry I can't be more precise, but I'm thinking that's about right :thumbsup2

Great report! We were on the week before you and all week last week we kept reminiscing about our trip ("ooh, this next cruise is now boarding, now they are in Mazatlan, etc.)

How were the seas for you? There was a tropical depression out there somewhere, and I was wondering if it kicked the seas up a bit? (Doesn't seem to or you would have mentioned it, I guess.) :)

thanks!

Thanks for your report! It was great. Could you tell me what your dining rotation and time were???

Thanks!

We were in boarding group 4 and we started boarding by 11:45. Some of the room were ready close to 1 but unfortunately, we had to wait until about 1:45 to get in so I had a workout lugging our carry-ons around the ship (I forgot to mention that we brought 6 bottle of wine with us). Parrot Cay seemed to be the better lunch buffet option as well. It felt less like you were dining in a buffet and the food just seemed to look better at PC vs. Topsiders.

The seas were not bad. From time to time we hit a decent size swell but it wasn't continuous so it didn't bother anyone. However for some reason I always tend to feel it coming back north between Ensenada and San Diego. I was told that I'm not alone and that those waters are notorious for that movement. One Bonine and I was fine 20 minutes later.

As for the dinner rotation. We had 5:45 APPLAPL. I was worried about having the Formal and Semi-Formal nights in Parrot's Cay but we fond that it was our favorite kitchen among the three in terms of quality and our table was by the windows. Besides, it took the "stuffiness" out of Formal Night.

I also realized that I forgot to mention that we checked in a case of water. I bought 28 bottles at Target for $5 as opposed to the case that they sold on the ship for $32. I can't stand drinking from a bathroom faucet so it was great always having a bottle handy in the room or to take with us around the ship and in port. It also helped us remember to drink lots of water!

I'm also very happy to report that with all of the good food - we only gained 2 pounds! All we did was take the stairs, drank lots of water, and tried to avoid the cream sauces (and never went to Scoops - I intentionally tried not to find it). Other people in our group were complaining that they couldn't fit into some of the clothes they brought by the sixth day. Only 3 days after I got off the boat, I'm back down to the same weight before I got on the Magic.:yay:

How was the weather on the days at sea? Was it still cold enough that you needed a sweatshirt? Thanks!

The weather was nice and warm until Saturday when it was foggy and overcast all day. I had already packed our sweatshirts (not needing them the rest of the week) so we just stated indoors that day.

In Cabo, it was warm and humid but bearable.

Mazatlan was hot and humid and we couldn't wait to take a shower when we got back on the ship.

Puerto Vallarta was nice in the morning but got VERY hot and humid by 3 p.m. We tried to walk around the Malecon area in the afternoon and just started feeling sick from the heat and again couldn't wait to shower and get back in the air conditioning.

Best bet is to plan any of you port activities in the morning before it gets too hot. We didn't have any rain but I heard that if it does, it happens in the afternoon and the evenings.

My family was also on the 6/29 sailing.

I had a rough time with sea sickness - I am probably more sensative given ear problems. For me it was lots of dramamine & the Sea Bands. If any one in your party is prone to any kind of motion sickness or anxiety, buy ahead of time. It was $11.00 for the dramamine that was marked $2.75 (probably what Disney paid!). The first day at sea, and back home were the worst. I have heard the Pacific can be rough sailing.

Ditto on the bottled water. We packed a small 20 in. roller with 30 bottles of water - and checked it right in with the rest of the bags, then we had an extra empty for taking home stuff!

Plan for pirate night -costumes & accessories. We spent less than $10 at a local party store - the inflatable parrott was a big hit!

The first day at sea I thought was cold - and my hoodie got left in the car! I suggest packing one - just in case.

Ditto on hot & humid in ports - now I know why all the cruise ships head to Alaska in the summer.

Don't miss the shows - they are awesome!

And I LOVED the activites staff -Christian, David from England, Oscar, Natalie, Claire, Emma, Melita, Dave from Rocking Bar D, all the others - made you feel like family!

Edited to add:
Dining rotation- PLLAPLA late seating. We had Selma & Henry - very good servers!

I took a couple of pics from the 4th...

Those were awesome. That would have been so fun to see!

I also had a question, you had said you were in boarding group 2, what time did you arrive at the terminal. I have looked many places and cannot find out what time the terminal will even let you arrive at. Someone had said they arrived at 9:30 and the desks opened at 10?
TIA!

Well, we stayed at PP the night before, so I checked in at the Cruise desk at GC and they gave us our boarding pass there...I guess everyone that checked in at GC got boarding pass 2. Which saved us much time since we wanted to go on our favorite rides at DL during EE. But we left PP at 9:45am, and it only took 30 minutes to get to the port (not real busy freeways on a Sunday morning) ;) But if this helps at all....when we got off the ship this past Sunday at around 8:30, there were already people going into the port on the opposite side....now I'm not sure if they were able to check in yet or not, or if DCL was keeping them all downstairs waiting, as I wasn't over there to actually see. HTH :thumbsup2 If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask :goodvibes

We got there (dropped at curb) at 10:30 and got boarding group #6 (and we didn't go straight to get our number, we were waiting to help my sister & stuff.

When they called the groups, it only took about 10 minutes to get to group 6 and beyond.

I think the people you saw were crew members getting back on the ship, I asked another crew member who these people were getting on the ship so early and this is what they said.

Hi Kouris Family!! Hope you all enjoyed your cruise  The people who were getting on the ship were indeed crew members...they had imigration checks that morning. We didn't get to see one of our servers the last morning because she was one getting checked. But, the people I was talking about were actually going into the terminal building from the entrance, so I'm thinking those were families with kids who were really excited and wanting to get there early ;)

We got there just before 9am. They let us check our luggage at 9am and wait inside the building. They said check in didn't open until 10 but they checked us in earlier than that. We were literally the first people to check in and got Boarding #3 (#1 is for Suite Guests and #2 is for DL Hotel Guests). They started boarding at 11:30 and let us in our rooms at 2pm.

Wow I didn't know that about the #2 boarding cards. We are staying at the GCH before the cruise and taking DCL transportation. So does that mean we'll get 2s? :cool1:

The DCL check in is between the Great hearth, and the Hearthstone Lounge in the GC. Just have your passports and online check in forms with you when you go there, or any necessary items (birth certificate, etc) you'd need for check in if you were at the port :thumbsup2 They give you your boarding pass #2 after you check in ;)
