Madonna interview-can't help but think of SNL

I did notice a very slight British accent but I didn't think it was very pronounced. I'd bet it's so slight the British people don't even notice it and hear only an American accent when she speaks.

I just watched some of the show and I agree with this. It is only comes out once in awhile. I don't see the big deal.

Reminds me of my sister. Hers comes out on certain words. :confused3

I have thought that Madonna has been putting on a pretentious accent for years. Long before she ever moved overseas. I think she must be trying hard to ditch her Detroit dialect (isn't that where she is from??maybe I am wrong).

I fully admit that I pick up different dialects easily too. But generally speaking the dialect you were raised with is the primary one you tend to use, unless you are trying hard to cover it up. Actually, many broadcasters do just that...learn "standard American English dialect" and use it while on air.

There are others that I don't understand the dialect with....Elizabeth Taylor, Tina Turner for instance :confused3

Once I heard a comedian making fun of Madonna (from Michigan) and Tina Turner (from Tennessee) and their British accents. Very funny! :rotfl:

I've worked with people who have actually taken classes in adopting a 'neutral' accent thinking it will help them advance their career. You can usually tell, too, because around here, people typically do have some kind of accent or another. Madonna has most likely worked with voice coaches in an attempt to do the same. In fact when I heard her speak on Oprah today, that is exactly what I thought of when I heard her speak. She has that very same 'coached' accent with a tiny bit of a British inflection. I do remember years ago, though, she seemed to speak with a much heavier British accent (or maybe I just noticed it more) :confused3

Interestingly enough, I do know some people who seem (to me) to have absolutely no accent whatsoever, although they were born and raised here in the South with parents who speak with a very heavy Southern accent. My nephew is one. Both his parents are obviously native Southerners yet he sounds like a newscaster. I've never been able to figure that one out. :confused3

....wow...my DS goes to college at the University of Glasgow, Scotland....he does not speak like he is a SCOT... :confused3

NOPE...he is not giving up his BOSTON accent for anything..... :rotfl:

You probably don't have to worry about that Massachusetts accent. I don't think anything will make it go away, whether you want it to or not! I'm from Massachusetts and even after 13 years in Texas, it's no different. DH, on the other hand, seems to pick up accents easily. He used to be in sales, and he said that was part of their sales training (in his business there's alot of travel to different parts of the country)-to have sort of a "neutral" accent. He said I'd never have made it!

I know that after living with my dh with his thick southern accent for a couple of decades I've picked up both phrases and a little bit of an accent. It sneeked up on me!

And though I have thought that before during interviews, I didn't today.
It seemed to me that she just enunciated properly and spoke clearly and concisely. :confused3
