DH's niece had a baby last week. She named the child Samanda. Not Amanda. Samanda. DH for whatever reason cannot grasp the child's name is NOT Amanda. His niece has corrected him several times, telling him, "no, Uncle John, its SAManda, not Amanda!!". All I can think of this poor child, her whole life she is going to be telling people her name is NOT Amanda, but SAManda. :confused3

I personally would never just make up a name for my child, but I know other people do. This particular niece already has two girls, January and Saturday. Weird, but for whatever reason, I like those names better than Samanda, which is not actually even a word. I guess January and Saturday, while certainly odd, are better because they are actually real words.

Whattya think?

I have an odd name. A lot of people think it is made up, but according to a website I visited recently, there are 1500 people with my name in the US.

Growing up, I hated my name, and I bet your neice will, too. Having to correct someone EVERY time you tell them your name, gets old, quick.

As an adult, I like my name, but having to correct someone EVERY time you tell them your name, gets old quick.

Although my name is unusual, people really don't listen when you tell them your name. And that I find a little rude.

First,Congratulations to your niece. :flower3:

I'm not a big fan of made-up names.
When I see Samanda I think of salmander fish.

Her child's name is Saturday?

I think I'd give her the nickname of Sam, Sandy or Andie. I don't mind unusual names, but I don't like tongue-twisters, and Samanda just doesn't "roll off" the tongue. I went to school with kids named Space, Solar and Rocket...unusual, yes, but they were easy to remember. Samanda is a name you trip over, for some reason.

The most unusual group of children's names are those of Paula Yates.

Yates had three children with Geldof (Fifi Trixibelle, Peaches, and Pixie) and one with Hutchence (Heavenly Hirrani Tiger Lily).

I dislike made up names, deliberate miSSSpeLinGs to be "unique" and generally any name where you need to include the correct pronunciation in parentheses after you write out the name.

Most of the time I do not like made up names, but there are exceptions. I have a cousin Marita which is a combination of Marie and Rita (two people who are very important to my Aunt). I think that Marita is a pretty name.

I tend to like names already in existence but I'm not opposed to a made up name if it sounds nice, is easy to pronounce and to spell. I have not come across many made up names that fit this criteria, but there have been 1 or 2 that did (can't remember them right now though).

I don't really like Samanda either, but in my opinion I disagree that it's worse than January and Saturday... that would just be bizarre! To me, at least Samanda sounds like a person's name, unlike a month or a day of the week. It may not be a real word, but after all, ALL names were "made up" at some point! ;)

I also agree about the poor kid having to continually correct others on her name. I can see it now:

Person: Nice to meet you, Amanda.

Samanda: No, it's Samanda.

Person: Right, it's Amanda.. I said, Amanda

Samanda: No, IT - IS - SAmanda

Person: oh, sorry...

My DD's name is even made up & people still get it wrong. It's Ashlyn & people constantly call her Ashley. It doesn't bother her though.

Not particularly fond of Samanda.

I'd rather a child with a weird name that is after something that exists (Coco, Apple, Moxie Crimefighter) than completely make the name up like Samanda

I totally agree. When my sister had her sons, she changed the spelling of their names to make them unique. I always felt bad for them, because they could never buy pre-personalized items at a store. I don't mind unique names, but I won't change the spelling or make up a name for my children.

I know two girls named Denae. I never thought it was odd or made up.:confused3

I cannot stand uneek or trendy names. That's just me though.

This is the scenario with DH and her already 3 times. I don't know if he truly does not understand the child's name or he's deliberately being obtuse. :lmao:

I don't care for Samanda. I, too, think she'll always have problems with that.

I like Mickeyboat's name though--Denae. I think that is very pretty. I actually never read it and thought it seemed "made-up".

It might not be made up. I went to Elementary school with a girl named Samanda. We always called her Sam though. Her mother was Greek, so I always assummed it was a Greek name. But, generally, no I don't like made up names or misspellings.
