Mad Cow Disease

Anyone else beginning to think that chicken is sounding really good for dinner tonight?? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE chicken and turkey, but I also love a good steak now and then.

*UGH* I had a feeling that Mad Cow Disease was going to hit the United States eventually, ever since watching a documentary about it when it hit the UK several years ago. A few scientists felt that the US wasn't taking it seriously enough.

Anyone else concerned or worried about this?? I don't dwell on these things, but I know here on the DIS we're a diverse group, from all around the country, and the world. As the person who decides what meals to feed to her family, I'm just not comfortable right now with buying and serving beef.

Care to share your feelings on this???

I'm not stressing over this. I'm sure it's still safer to eat beef than drive to work / school every day. I don't think I'll be stopping that anytime soon.

My only real concern is... jobs..
I live near Fremont NE.. Which has 2 beef packing plants.. one being Hormel and the other Fremont Beef.. Well they are both talking about closing down..

So in our neck of the woods it will hurt us that way..

I do have a question.. if humans eat meat that might of came from a cow that had mad cow ( with or with out knowing) how does it effect us?

I'm in Nebraska and it's big business here, so it is a big deal in our news. I'm not worried about it yet. I know the beef I buy comes from here and they don't get cows from Canada here, at least that's what they are saying so far. I know our cows are all suppose to be corn-fed to make them taste better. If you get desperate for beef, order from Omaha steaks!

The IL's had a roast for Christmas... I couldn't eat it #1 it was so rare it was still mooing and #2 I just don't care for beef. FIL was mighty pissed at me but really don't give a darn.

I actually put the steaks I had in my grocery cart BACK on the shelf Friday. I was uncomfortable. I have not had beef since Christmas day, but am craving some. I guess since I lived in Europe for awhile, I am more aware of the disease.

Are Omaha Steaks 100% GRAIN fed??? If so, I'd consider ordering. My father and sister order from Omaha Steaks and LOVE them.

Even better an Omaha one.. I can't talk DH to move back to Omaha - even though we are there 95% of the time.. Daughter plays select softball so we are there a lot.

I think you have a better chance of getting salmonella from chicken than mad cow from beef.

Funny, I havent had beef because after reading and hearing about mad cow disease I am scared but then again I am thinking of cancelling my trip to Vegas, after hearing planes might be used for terrorists I am petrifided, I should just move into a bubble

Seaspray, I went to Omahasteaks.com and it didn't say anything about being grainfed. That is what was drilled into me growing up, so I'm assuming. It does say some things about mad cow if you want to go see what it says. It's under Customer Service and then Products. You have to eat the central nervous system of an infected cow to get it. I don't eat that part!


Buckleybunch, a week or two ago on the Theme Parks & Strattegies board they posted Rainbow Rowell's article about being a Disney fanatic and a bunch of Nebraskans here on the Dis (including Rainbow!) posted! Very cool!

Parts of the central nervous system can get into ground beef.
I can cook chicken well and take precautions and avoid salmonella. I have NO control over this and cooking will do nothing to destroy it. It is fatal to humans-can even show up 40 years later. I can't donate blood as I lived in Europe during certain years.
I know the chances are slim, but isn't it kind of weird that parts from 1 cow went to 8 different states?? I am sure there is not just the 1, we don't test them all. Until more assurances come out, I may avoid ground beef.

I wouldn't worry too much about steaks right now. It is ground beef, with all sorts of cow parts in it, that would be a bigger issue, I think. That said, I am having hamburgers for dinner.....

I'm not worried about the Nebraska Beef, now if I was in a state that didn't raise cattle that might be a different story.
We live some what in the country, my daughter has a lot of friends that the parents have feeding lots.. I trust the midwest farmers.

About 5 or 6 years back, because of the news of Mad Cow in Europe, I stopped our family from eating all forms of beef, (including Jello - contained Gelatine made from beef) and read ingrediants in everything - (who knew that turkey pot pies contained gelatine-marshmellos too. Anyhow my friends and family laughed at me.

This is one time I wish I didn't have to say "See - I told you so".

Although I went back just last year to eating beef because of no new mad cow news, I will have to boycott all beef/beef products again.

Tip - read lables - gelatine is made from cow bones and its in lots of products, i.e. gravy mix, candy etc.
