Someone really dropped the ball with my DD today and I'm fuming! :furious:

She went on a field trip today, and according to her she wasn't feeling well at all, and fell asleep. She didn't tell anybody, but IMO it's really obvious when she's sick, as she gets dark circles under her eyes and she just looks bad. They got back to the school around 2:00, and I can understand that maybe her teacher honestly didn't notice that she was sick.

BUT, she attends an after-school program. When I went to pick her up around 5:45, she was lying on a cafeteria bench asleep -- on a hard cold bench with nothing covering her, and nothing to rest her head on. She had goosebumps when I went over to wake her up. They told me she was sick the whole time.

And they couldn't have called me???

I was so mad, I couldn't even say anything, I just marched out of there with her. I'm going to call tomorrow and talk to whoever is in charge. I can't believe she had to lie on that hard bench for 3 hours when she could have been comfortably home in bed. Now tell me again why kids shouldn't have cell phones in school??? :furious: (yeah I know)

Apparently. When I walked in the door, the first thing they said to me was that she'd been sick the whole time she was there.

I don't know if she said anything to her actual teacher during the school day, but the teachers at the after-school program knew she was sick.

Ohhhh Marseeya,

I am so sorry!
Makes you wonder just who is looking after our children.

:sad2:

My son, who is somewhat special needs, is not one to speak up.... If this ever happens to him, I will be livid.

Last year he came down with the absolute WORST case of strep that I have ever seen, after I personally witnessed a classmate, visibly physically ill with strep, crying that she did not feel good, etc.. be left in school that way for several days, in class, sitting right next to DS in the cafeteria, in gym etc... I felt so sorry for this little girl!!! I even mentioned to the teacher after sitting next to her and DS in lunch, that maybe she should go to the nurses office. DS told me when he got home that she was right back in class. :sad2:

I would be livid too. They definately should have made the call and at least kept her somewhat comforable till you got there.

Right, and there's another thing -- how many kids did DD just make sick today? She's been in bed sleeping since she got home. I'll probably have to keep her out tomorrow.

I hope your DS's teachers know that he wouldn't say anything to them if he didn't feel well.

I just can't wait for this school year to be over. :(

If they'd at least had her comfortable, I wouldn't be so upset. I know this isn't ideal, but there was a huge pile of lost & found clothes nearby, and not one person thought to cover her with something, or give her something for a pillow? I wanted to cry when I saw her like that.

How old is your daughter? You said she didn't tell anyone? If she was so sick why didn't she tell anyone? Did she not want to miss the field trip. I guess I'm just confused because first you said she didn't tell anyone then you say they knew. :confused3

Her Sig says 10

But that doesn't matter we put these people in care of our kids and they have to have common sence .A call should be made and then MOM or DAD can decide what needs to be done .But to leave an ovious sick child lay on a bench is un excusable.

I'll try to explain it better. She's 10, but she's extremely immature for her age.

I don't know if she told anyone on the field trip, or even at what point she started feeling bad. The trip took place during the normal school day, from 8-3. I'm not blaming her regular teacher. DD did tell me that she slept through the opera that they saw, and then she slept on the bus, so it would have been nice if someone would have noticed that something was off with her, but nobody did.

Then, she goes to an after-school program from 3-6 a few days a week, and there are different teachers involved with this program. I don't know if she specifically told THEM that she was sick, but THEY told ME that she had been sick the entire time. So my gripe is, if they knew she was sick the entire time, why didn't they call me at any point between 3 and 6 to have me come get her rather than letting her sleep on a bench.

Sorry for the confusion! I hope that clears it up a bit.

Did anyone notice that she left the house looking/feeling this way, or
was it something that came on all of a sudden?

At our school, if students are not throwing up or running a fever, then calls
are usually not made home, unless the nurse advises it otherwise.

As for what happened after school, can't speak to that, we do not have one
of those programs.

The teachers at school notice nothing.

I will NEVER let one of my kids on a field trip without going.

Once, my son wet his pants in the boys room at kindergarten and was gone for two hours before a janitor found him. The teacher never noticed he was gone.

On his first day of kindergarten, he did not come in during recess because he fell asleep on the playground (afternoon kindergarten, it was his normal naptime). No one noticed he was gone.

I was on a field trip once and they lost two of the little boys, and no one had seen them for over an hour.

Very scary how unobservant they are.

Ok, devil's advocate here....

Your DD went to school and started to not feel good - I get that. But to the chaperones, she was sleeping during an opera. She's a teenager - I assume they get tired - I was always was. It may not have surprised them that she slept through it. She may not have been the only one. I don't know that I'd fault the teachers at the Opera as they may have just thought she was snoozing (and not sick)... You've said that DD is immature for her age - maybe it didn't cross her mind to ask them to call you.

With regards to the after school activity - did they say she was sick or just laying down? Again, kids may have done that before so it may not have been unsual.

I don't know that I'd be 'livid' with the school. Teacher do their best and sometimes make mistakes, but your DD also is going to need to learn to speak up for herself in cases like this. Like another poster said - maybe she *thought* she could make it through the day.

Even my 8 year old keeps things to herself to 'not bother people' about them. I can only imagine it will get worse.

IMO It is not the teachers job to ask every child who falls asleep if they are sick, half the kids come to school tired with dark circles. At 10 she should have said something heck at 5 she should have said something. At our school parents aren't called unless the child asks to go to the office and they have an elevated temperature, throwing up only gets you a lay down on a bench in the health room and then back to class.

as far as using clothes from the lost and found as soon as they do that they will get in trouble 'cause someone gets lice or is allergic to wool etc. Maybe they didn't call because they figured she was asleep, or she wouldn't be able to be picked up quick cause most kids are there because their folks work. I have made those calls and the usual response is I can't leave work I'll try to get there early but... I'm not sure why you are upset with her being asleep on a bench kids sleep anywhere. My 7 yr old layed down on the kitchen floor with a blanket no pillow on Sunday and fell asleep-within sight of a couch or recliner or at least a carpeted floor!

I would be more upset with her for not saying something as she gets older the school will notice her even less so I would be drumming into her that she has to speak up. I hope she feels better, if it is what is going around here it lasts 2-3 days.

FTR, I don't consider 10 to be a teenager, and I would think that a teacher who's had her all year would notice the difference in her behavior. She LOVES the opera and has been looking forward to this trip for a long time now. Many kids might sleep through it, but she wouldn't. Not to mention, she never goes to school tired or worn out -- she's always cheerful and bright.

I do agree that she needs to learn to speak up for herself.

I'm sure she's probably still in bed, but how was she doing last night? Feeling any better? :)

Maybe I'm just holding her teachers to too high of a standard, but I wouldn't let something like this go myself. I would notice the difference in my students. I'm not sure where you teach that "half" the kids come to school tired with dark circles, but I assure you, this is not the case with the kids in DD's class, and it's certainly never been the case with her.

And I'm not the least bit upset with her for any of this. I can't imagine why I would be. She's not the adult in charge.

I think my reaction would be to make sure to tell my DD to let someone know that she isn't feeling well and that she wants to go home the next time.

She was pretty miserable! She had a temp of 103 and was a little delirious (that happens with her when she gets a higher temp). I just checked on her a couple of minutes ago and she's still zonked, so I'm keeping her home.

Thanks for asking. :goodvibes
