Macy's Parade without Mickey?

I'm watching the parade right now and just realized there aren't any any Disney characters in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Funny how they would include random PBS shows but not a huge American icon like Mickey!

I'm watching the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day parade--must be underwritten/sponsored in part by Disney/ABC, because it's had tons of Disney Stuff, including characters, promos for cruises, a tribute to High School Musical, soap stars, etc.

Universal has the Macy's parade in their park so I bet they would use those characters instead.

does anyone know why Macy's doesn't have any Disney characters? Im just curious really. It seems a little strange that no Disney characters would be there but Corbin Bleu and Ashley Tisdale perform.

Well for starters, the Macy's parade is now an NBC/Universal broadcast. And I suspect that Disney has put it's resources into the Philly parade as a result.

I am sure it would pain Disney greatly to pay money to be in an NBC broadcast.

the parade is also shown on cbs. I think the marketing group figured they could spend their money elsewhere and get a bigger bang for the buck. of note, nbc did show a scene from mary poppins earlier in the broadcast, so i doubt it has anything to do with the network it's shown on.

I think it does have to do with the network it's shown on. Disney owns ABC, and since, only ABC has shown Disney is their parades.

I can remember watching the parade on NBC for forty or fifty years. While it might have some clips on ABC, they don't show the entire parade from start to finish. They have always covered all the Thanksgiving parades on ABC and CBS and not soley the Macy's parade.

I read on the DisneyBroadway website that the cast of Broadway's Mary Poppins would be performing at the Macy's Parade. Can anyone confirm? I'm at work, i have to wait until tonight to watch the parade.

Mickey was the Grand Marshal at the Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade. How do you all expect him to be in 2 places at once?

yes, they performed during the first hour.

disney had a huge float in 2005 loaded with characters as part of the HCOE. not sure why they really aren't active participants. it's not really a network thing. there are disney balloons (chicken little - who wasn't in this year, jojo, etc - there even used to be mickey and goofy balloons). it's probably more that they don't feel like making the investment, they got plenty going on themselves. it also probably doesn't help that universal studios orlando hosts a mini macy's holiday parade.

and, okay, this one is a bit of a stretch, but since i'm watching my friends tigger & pooh at the moment, the theme song is performed by kay hanley, who spent her morning surrounded by care bears (please take necessary precautions to avoid the care bear stare)

so there you go, a bit more disney than you thought afterall
