Macon, GA...Anyone stayed here?

Hey all. Driving from the Far Northern burbs of Chicago and was looking to stop around Macon, GA on the way down. Anyone stayed here? Is it a safe enough area for an overnight? It will be my DH and my two munchkins. I was just looking for a place south of Atlanta to stop and came up with that. I was looking at a Holiday Inn Express on the west side off of 475. Any insight would be wonderful.

On our first two Florida trips from Indianapolis to St Augustine and Ft Myers Beach, we stopped in Macon both times. Perfect distance for the second day, and great selection of hotels. We stayed at La Quinta just off 475 I believe...there's a Carrabba's right across the street, easy access, beautiful hotel with a gorgeous pool and fabulous breakfast buffet.

Now we drive straight through, but our girls are also older...8 & 9 now. When we first went, they were 1 & 2, and then 3 & 4. We HAD to stop for our own sanity!

We live in SW Michigan and would always stop in Tifton, GA which is just south of Macon.

I'd rather get on the road early and then stop overnight early enough to relax, order a pizza and pop a beverage from the cooler.

Our typical drive down (towing a camper) was to be on the road by 3:30 am and stop for the night in Tifton about 7:00 pm ... ish. Back on the road in the morning around 7:30 am and pulling into Ft Wilderness about 11:00 am.

On the way back, we would be on the road by 6:00 am with an overnight in Elizabethtown, KY ... then a 6 hr drive home from there the next day.

Last time down from Michigan, I stopped at the LaQuinta Inn off I-75. (The other one off 475, I am not familiar with.) It was a Priceline win and an excellent value. I cannot recall whether any restaurants or other conveniences were in the immediate area.

We stop in Byron, just south of Macon. We stay at the Comfort Suites on Dunbar road. Nice rooms, good pool and a hot tub to relax the back in. 10 days and we'll be there. 11 and we're at Walt Disney World.
