...is it on your table for Christmas dinner? Was it on the table at Thanksgiving?

I'm curious. For us, mac & cheese is a casual kind of food...eaten with hot dogs and hamburgers, not a holiday feast. In my little corner of the world, I don't know of anyone who would serve mac & cheese for a holiday dinner. I never even knew people did until I began Dissing.

I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with serving it, I bet my kids would have it growing up.

In my neck of the woods, it's a staple (and we aren't talking boxed). It's always around for my husbands family holidays but with two boys with dairy and gluten allergies, it won't be on our table this year.

It's considered a staple in African American households around here. Part of our family is African American, and part is white. So, whether or not we eat it depends on where we're going!

My son has recently decided that we should start bringing mac and cheese to the white family, but I don't know how to cook something worthy of the holiday table.

I am having it because my kids love it. Homemade though, not from a box.

We are having:

Roasted beef tenderloin
Twice baked potatoes
mac and cheese
roasted brussel sprouts
steamed asparagus with holandaise(homemade)
pan roasted turnips with caramalized onions and honey

I voted never but not because it's not fancy...

Growing up my father did the cooking and he hated "that orange stuff". Now we do brunch/breakfast with my family so it doesn't fit in the menu there. DH hates it also so I would never plan it for dinner with he & I. If we go to his family, they cook Italian food.

I would never serve macaroni & cheese at a holiday gathering (or any family gathering). I make it from scratch only once or twice a year and that is plenty for me. It is good, but I see it as more of a super-casual lazy type dish, like something I would make if I don't feel like cooking. We don't really eat a lot of pasta, maybe once every month or so. Never, ever, would I serve boxed or frozen mac & cheese.

I do think it pairs very well with ham, though...but I would dice up ham and add it for a one-dish meal, not serve it with a fancy ham dinner! lol

I like traditional holiday meals. I grew up having turkey every Thanksgiving and ham every Christmas. This year, though, we are going to see The Hobbit on Christmas Day and getting Chinese takeout. My husband and I have been so busy with family functions this year we decided to take a break. But other than this year, we enjoy the traditional meals even when it's just the two of us.

I think mac & cheese is mostly a Southern thing as far as serving it with a holiday meal. Someone else mentioned African Americans doing it also, I didn't know that but I guess I can picture it now.

Yes, we have 11 nieces/nephews so whenever I cook, this is one of my side dishes. Even picky eaters seem to like it. I have a crockpot recipe that is cooking right now. I use that recipe when I'm busy with other dishes on the stove/in the oven, which is pretty much any holiday they're all coming here!!

It's not that it isn't fancy enough for a holiday meal, just not something I want on my table for one.
When I do make it, it is never out of a box...........that will never happen in this house.

We're having mac & cheese for the first time at Christmas. I've always made a huge ham & turkey & dressing Christmas feast, but my older kids are over that. All they want is simple fare, like finger sandwiches, raw veggie plater, cheese & cracker, etc. DD19 is vegetarian, so i decided to make her some hearty mac & cheese this year. We'll see how it goes over.

I will be making our mac and cheese for dinner tomorrow morning, just like I did for Thanksgiving.

It became a tradition when one of my nieces became a vegetarian, since the family now has two vegetarians tomorrow we will have a meatless Lasagna and Mac and Cheese as well as the Ham and Roast Beef my mother is making.

It is not usually served at our holiday dinners because MIL or I always make cheesy potatoes instead. However, it's just my immediate family tomorrow and DS has requested it. I will be making it homemade because he likes that better than the boxed stuff.

that's funny! I was having a conversation about menus with a good friend of mine who is Haitian. She is married to an African American man. In her family, the staple starch at holiday time is rice. In her DH's it is mac n cheese.

In my family, it is mashed potatoes. She thought mashed potatoes was weird!

I do make homemade mac n cheese, but wouldn't think to serve it for a holiday dinner.

I made it yesterday for that family meal. I served ham and it was the only starch I made. I had to make the meal ahead of time and take it to my moms and it was just easier to make mac and cheese to travel with. I made hash brown casserole for todays meal and will make mashed potatoes on Christmas day, so it just seemed easier to make mac and cheese for the meal on Sunday.

made it last year when we went to friends for a xmas eve buffet because it was easy to prepare in advance and reheat since I worked until nearly dinner time & there were 5 or 6 kids going to be there that don't like some of the traditional ham fixings. It was one of the first dishes that was completely gone by time everyone got first helpings.

I won't be making it with my xmas dinner but it wouldn't upset me if I saw it on a host's holiday table.

We don't have it, but not for any reason other than we already have potatoes on the table. I've never made a meal that had both potatoes and pasta. Frankly, I'd be happy as a clam and would love it a little too much!
